| This Weekend Thousands of Pagans Showed Their Pride|
and the community is quite proud of them.
I'd like to start off this week's update by saying thank you from my spirit to all of you that sent healing wishes/energy, cards, email and letters this way. I was both surprised and deeply moved by this. Thanks to this incredible community I am back 100% with renewed optimism and enthusiasm. My deepest thanks go to my lover, friend and life companion Wren for her support, fab cooking and amazing magic. I'd also like to thank her for doing the text of the last two weekly updates. Do know that I too enjoy her words and will encourage her to do more writing for the WitchVox home page. (The Witchvox animated gif to your right was rendered by Rev. Sebastian Comyns of the wonderful Website The Amaranth Information Network - Nice work... Thank you)
A White WitchVox? Maybe... Those of you that came in our front door (http://www.witchvox.com) noticed a radical change ... A White WitchVox front page. This is an experiment and may only be temporary. This is a decision that you will make. Black is a powerful color and Witchvox was originally designed with a black background. After 40 months of black we thought we ask you what you think. The big advantages of "going white" would be easier readability and printing. Doing separate black AND white versions would be impractical.
Should we convert pages at the Voice to a white background or should we stay black? Email us with YOUR thoughts (THREE Day Results: Black=88 White=66 Both=4)
For the record: Squirrels, egrets, storks and the other creatures around here do indeed love Wren. What she neglected to mention was that they somehow know that I am her mate. We live in an apartment complex (third floor) and this menagerie will chase me from the parking lot right up the stairs in order to have an audience with their Wren. Their love for her is amazing. The stalking of me is frightening.
This was the big "Pagan Pride" weekend. Literally, scores of local events will take place during these two days as pagans across the U.S. and Canada celebrate both their diversity and their solidarity. We at TWV LOVE to put up pictures of those smiling and happy faces, so if you have some shots that were taken at your local 'Pagan Pride' event, send them on over with a short write-up and we will feature them on the site. Likewise, if you find a news item about a pagan celebration, March or event in your local papers, we would love to see it here on Wren's Nest. Visit the Pagan Pride Home Page for coverage of how things went this year in the 34 cities that were involved.
Hurrican Floyd Coverage Thanks to the timely reporting of our good friend Nitewing, we can offer his thoughts on dealing with a shelter and the tremendous amount of water that hit South Carolina. Check out A Hurricane in North Carolina
The WitchVox surveys: Our thanks go out to over one thousand of you that filled out our new survey during its first week. We will have the first round of results by mid week. If you haven't participated .... Please do by clicking here. We will continue to collect data from this survey (and others) until the end of the year. The next survey will hit in a weeks time and will focus on what the Pagan Web means to you, how you use it and what design techniques you like or dislike.
Obsidian is Back... it's been a few moons but some talented East Coast Pagans have come back with very strong issue of Obsidian Magazine (both on and offline).
Their latest work features: New Issue (#4) with an ancient Egyptian theme. A new animated (Flash) "intro movie" with music leading you into the site. FREE sample of the magazine available through the website as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file. Several new web photo essays in the special features section featuring the Catacombs under Paris, Cemeteries in old Savannah, and more. New Obsidian logo Great articles, eye catching illustrations, animated nav header, cleaner look - the most buttoned up site and magazine we've ever had. Peg (WitchVox Media Coordinator) even has an article on Perfumed Mummies and a continuing column of her own called "Albion Moonlight".
Covens and Groups Clean up: Anyone that works hard at it can have a large listing or mailing list. The real challenge is to keep it "correct and for the good of all". This means constant maintenance and the evolvement of systems to make this practical. This past week we sent out an email verify for the first time for our Covens and Groups listings. This means two things; a) all email contacts in this section have work and that we now have a system to keep this list clean and accurate. Out of 850 listings 40 HAVE been removed due to "non-working" email addresses; So if you had a listing and now its gone it is because the email addy that you had listed returned and "undeliverable". If so we ask that you resubmit your listing.
Other systems already in place include:
The verification of all website addresses in our links pages and people pages on a monthly basis (close to 5,000). Verification of all "ongoing" events on our circles and events pages on a quarterly basis (last done two weeks ago). Verification of all email addresses on our people pages are done on a quarterly basis (over 15,000 addresses).
This means that when you work with our networking pages chances are in the 98% range that the data is both current and accurate.
Jane's Tidings NOW has it's Own Section here at WitchVox: The Witches' Voice is once again privileged to feature the latest installment of the fine reporting and gathering work of Jane from Maine. Wren and I have been honored to know Jane for more moons than we'd ever care admit to. THIS MONTH we have made the decision to give Jane's tidings a Chapter of its own here at WitchVox. Click HERE for the latest Edition of Jane's Tidings. We love you Jane!
WitchVox FAQ's NOW in Finnish AND Italian Thanks to the diligent work of Elena (Italian) and Morna (Finnish) we can now offer the WitchVox F.A.Q.'s (Frequently Asked Questions) in Finnish and Italian . This compliments our English and Spanish versions. If you'd like to transcribe this critical page into German, Latin etc... simply save the page as html... Open it up in word processor, transcribe and save "as text"... Please do not alter the html code in anyway (please do not us ms office 97 because it will rewrite the code). Then simply email it back to us.
Genetic Manipulation One of the most profound and far-reaching scientific discoveries of the 20th century is the ability to genetically alter organisms. We are tinkering with the very foundation of life, while many of the scientists working in the field seem to think their experiments should be unhindered by the ethical concerns of those who are not scientists. Should we be concerned?
Genetic manipulation will affect all of us in one way or another in the coming years. Is it right? Is it wrong? There is huge potential for both harm and healing. How does it fit in with Pagan ethics and beliefs? Niall Leighton takes on Monsanto in a new essay that may shock you. If you haven't started thinking about the subject, you won't be able to put it out of your mind after you read this.
We want to hear YOUR reaction to Niall's article, and we will publish a selection of representative responses. We would also be willing to publish any **well-researched**, thoughtful, 1000 to 2000 word essay taking the "pro" side in this debate.
The Fall Equinox is approaching and some of us are celebrating the 'second harvest' of Mabon. A by-product here in Florida from hurricane Floyd was a bounty of downed willow boughs. These are now drying on our porch to be used in wreaths, headpieces, brooms and baskets. Heeding that "gathering-in" call of Nature, this is not only a good time for personal harvesting of herbs and garden fruits, but also a wonderful opportunity to help clean-up your local parks and beaches. Enjoy the bounty of the Earth Mother this week!
Have a safe and wonderful week everyone!
