Year 2000: A Time for Needed Change

Greetings Sisters and Brothers,

As the Millennium approaches so many of us are rethinking our lives and our future direction. Wren and I are doing just that, both with WitchVox and our personal lives (an increasing desire to actually have one). We have countless ideas and numerous dreams but it is clear that they won't be achieved with this model in its present state. We are currently giving this matter much thought and analyzing any and all possible alternatives.

This mission has *survived* for almost 4 years due to the support of our sponsors. Selfless giving is a rarity these days and we couldn't have come this far without their help. Thank YOU sponsors of the Witches Voice, thank you for believing in this mission.

Starhawk Details her Arrest at WTO Protest in Seattle: I want to thank you all for all the energy, healing, and concern I've felt from you over the past week. I'm out of jail now, and recovering rapidly from bronchitis. I've been through one of the most intense and powerful experiences of my life--and I've had a few! Physically, it was often very hard. But over and over again I would look around at the other women I was locked up with, and realize that there was no place else in the world I would rather be at that moment. For the complete letter, surf to Starhawk's WTO Experience here at the voice.

Passings This Week...
The WitchVox staff would like to extend our deepest regrets to the families and friends of Cecil Williamson and Lady Janet. May they rest safely in the arms of the Great Ones.

  • Cecil Williamson - Historian, Folklorist, and Wise man - Died peacefully on the 9th December in Devon, England after a long illness aged 90 years. He was the founder and former proprietor of both the Museum of Witchcraft on the Isle of Man, and more recently - the Museum of Witchcraft in Boscastle Cornwall. At his own request there will be no funeral service. All who would like to mark his passing are asked to conduct their own ritual at 10:00pm GMT Sat 18th December. They will be linked to the many friends and colleagues who will be remembering Cecil at that time. (Obituary written by Levannah Morgan and forwarded to us from Merlyn & Epona www.witchcraft.org)

  • Lady Janet - WebMistress & Friend - Passed into Summerland yesterday, Sunday, December 12, 1999. From Lady Cerridwen and Lord Rhuddlwm (Y Tylwyth Teg) "It saddens me to announce that Lady Janet Partin, most recently of the beautiful N. Georgia Mountains, and our full time Webmistress, went on her journey to Defrobani (Summerland) at 4:23am E.S.T this morning. Lord Delusion, of Wales, posted a death threat message against our website, us, and our webmistress. The anxiety, fear and stress which Ms. Partin experienced subsequent to this death threat was diagnosed as the major contributor to her myocardial infarction. Knowing the depth of Ms. Partin's love of and belief in the Craft, this death threat equals murder. For the complete story visit the Y Tylwyth Teg web site.

Phases of the Moon: A Once in a lifetime View This Solstice

This year will be the first full moon to occur on the winter solstice since _1866_. The solstice, commonly called the first day of winter, is Dec. 22 this year.

Since a full moon on the winter solstice occurs in conjunction with a lunar perigee (point in the moon's orbit that is closest to Earth), the moon will appear about 14% larger than it does at apogee (the point in it's elliptical-oval shaped-orbit that it farthest from the Earth). Since the Earth is also several million miles closer to the sun at this time of the year than in the summer, sunlight striking the moon is about 7% stronger, making the moon shine brighter.

ALSO, this will be the closest perigee of the moon this year since the moon's orbit is constantly deforming (changing slightly). If the weather is clear and there is a snow cover where you live, it is believed that even car headlights will be superfluous (i.e. car headlights will not as bright as the moon, and therefore practically useless).

In laymen's terms it will be a super bright full moon, much more than the usual AND it hasn't happened this way for 133 years!! our ancestors 133 years ago saw this event. Our descendants 100 or so years from now may see it again.

The above information is from Fritz Osell, astronomy professor at Leeward Comm. Coll. in Honolulu. It was posted to the Physics Modeling email list was sent to us by Sanna. Thanks!

Kiva's Excellent English Excursion: This week we feature Ariana's story of Kiva's trip to the UK. "Nearly a year ago I was asking around to find out how to get a performance in England since I had heard from a couple of English friends that England would be a great place for KIVA to play. My friend Anne Lister (a folk singer from London who has played at Cerridwin's Coffeehouse in Maryland) helped me find a website with a set of festival listings in England by the month. I looked in August, which was when my employers would let me go for 3 weeks. I contacted a whole list of folks and got a response from the Billingham International Folklore Festival. They liked KIVA and invited us to play at their festival!" . For the complete story surf to Kiva's Excellent English Excursion in our newly revamped Pagan Music Section.

Busy as Bees here at WitchVox: Background automation and systems design took a major leap forward this week at WitchVox. Thanks to a brilliant piece of coding by a lad named Peter Baanen from the Netherlands (www.troi.com) we are on our way to positioning ALL 1600 of our pages for global updates, re-coloring and increased accuracy. Although changes on this site are too numerous to detail here, a few are: a revamping of our Pagan Music section and building our powerful new VoxSearch engines into the footer of all pages at WitchVox.

Wiccan/Pagan Times features Interview with Sirona Knight
The Wiccan/Pagan Times is proud to bring you our Author's Corner Author for December, Sirona Knight. Sirona Knight's books include Moonflower: Erotic Dreaming With the Goddess and Greenfire: Making Love With the Goddess both published by Llewellyn. Ms. Knight is a High Priestess in the Celtic Gwyddonic Druid Tradition and a Third Degree Craftmaster. She is also a hypnotherapist and a contributing editor for Magical Blend magazine. As always TWPT strives to bring you up close to the authors that you have come to know via their books and let see them as fellow travelers on this path that we all walk. Enjoy! Blessed be Imajicka.

Pagan Essays for December!

"Gimme A Spell" and "Can You Ever Have Too Many Athames?"

Dec '99 Gimme a Spell! .... Two wise authors give insight into how to separate the merely curious from the true seeker. They agree that some of those who ask for spells truly want to learn, and they deserve to be taught spellcrafting. As for the others—well, there's a very funny reply quoted in one of the essays; "Honey, this ain't Spell-Mart!".

Dec '99 Can You Ever Have Too Many Athames? The always thoughtful and plain-spoken Niall Leighton was the only person to take on the subject of "Can You Ever Have Too Many Athames?". He does an excellent and witty job of trying to "filter out the twaddle from the gutter end of the New Age marketplace". Don't miss this one!

Many thanks to all who contributed an essay. Your voice does matter!

Wren and Fritz can't thank the beautiful Dio enough for the help that she has delivered to us by taking over and delivering the Monthly essays. She has been a gift from the Goddess and we are honored to work with her. Bless YOU Dio and welcome home.
