Back on Solid Ground - Back in Your Service
During this past week the Witches' Voice on the Web finally stabilized. We are feeling quite comfortable in our new home (thanks, Lhiannon) and overwhelmed by the community support related to who we are and what we do. THANK YOU!
Wren and I just returned from a wonderful week of healing at the Heartland Festival in Kansas. It was a fabulous time and we will have a full review up later this week or early next week. NOTE: Wren caught something in her eye (probably glitter) and is presently with ice trying to bring the swelling down. So kindly note that updates to Wren's Nest and the festival review will be delayed until she can see properly.
Over the past week we have received many questions about the image to your right, so we thought we'd run it again this week. This image was taken in 1994 in Laurie Cabot's backyard by yours truly during the filming of "Witches, Werewolves and Vampires" (the Learning Channel). Although this special had its "moments", the 9 minute segment on Witchcraft was very well done. Look for it to be repeated in the months to come.
Crazy Rumors... Over the past week we had the chance to chat with hundreds of Witches, Wiccans and Pagans face to face. What surprised us was the plethora of misinformation related to our problems of the past few weeks. Although we have detailed our situation in three separate and timely updates (see Last Week and the Week before for details), misinformation has been making its way around the Pagan Net.
Rumors vs. Reality
Sponsors and Lots of Them!
- The Witches' Voice is Broke: We are NOT broke. Our financial balance has never been stronger. True, we DID go into the red at the end of the first quarter of this year, but an auction held at the PhoenixPhyre festival DID bring us back to the black. Our big concern was that we didn't "blow our balance" on high hosting charges (our deal of 3 years was over and the prospects as of two weeks ago looked bleak). Our primary focus of late has been to cut the best hosting deal we could find. That is exactly what we did. We also made a plea for community support for the first time in two years. The response was incredible. We are on VERY stable ground thanks to sponsorships from over a hundred of you that did deem this site and its future worthy of your support.
- The Religious Right is out to Shut Down WitchVox: We have no reason to believe this true. Our servers have been up and down due to changes, movement, experimentation. No one has attempted to "hack" or "sabotage" this website. In the past 4 years we have received only 11 pieces of Christian fundamentalist hate mail (every piece was typed in all caps with very bad spelling).
- WitchVox Doesn't Answer its Email: This is partially true due to a crazy volume of email in the past 3 weeks (but mercifully much more manageable during the past week). We do read them all, but YES there are so many that we simply can't answer. We apologize for this! Wren and I are proud to say that we have responded to 99.9% of our email of the past 4 years. We are so buried at this point (over 2,000 pieces between us) it appears that we may never be able to claim this again. We ARE working on it but have decided that it is best to deal with the more popular questions via our weekly updates (this page).
- WitchVox Is Going Away: Untrue... We never believed this, even for a second. We did know that our situation of the past couple of weeks would only be temporary and stated this clearly. Given the situation presented to us two weeks ago we had no choice but to take 80% of the site temporarily offline. It does cost money to deliver the volume of pages we do, our financial concern was real. The only way WitchVox will go away is when are no longer of value to the Neo-Pagan community. Only you can make this decision.
The financial support of the past two weeks has left us both speechless and deeply moved. Never did we imagine this level of support.
Donations from 3 dollars and up have come in to the tune of over 100 (including a famous Pagan Author). The notes attached to these donations have been wonderful. Most simply wanted this site to grow and prosper, many wanted us to accept the donations personally as a way of saying thanks for the past 4 years. Although this is very flattering we accept no pay for this work. The sponsorship donations go to communication charges, handouts, Policeman's Guide to Wicca, *some* hardware/software upgrades, legal fees, office supplies and the many of the other expenses involved in making WitchVox all that it can be.
Before we left for Heartland we DID process the first batch of sponsorships (about 80) upon our return we found another 30 in our P.O. box, we will be processing those in the next couple of days.
BIG TIME Witch Hugs to all of you that deem this worthy of your financial support.
|Powerful Adult Essays for May NOW Up: |
Children and Overpopulation: We received some passionate responses to this from a variety of viewpoints. Many people urged not having children, while others felt that the population problem will never be solved without severely infringing on personal liberty. Whatever your point of view on this, reading these essays will give you a new perspective on the subject. Check out the Children and Overpopulation essays... Page ONE - TWO - THREE - FOUR - FIVE - SIX - SEVEN
Teens and School Violence: Another thoughtful set of essays on the problem of school violence, and the overreaction of school and government officials. We Pagans value personal freedoms, and are quick to point out that turning schools into virtual prisons for children treats only the symptoms of a deeper problem, and creates even more problems in the process. Check out Teens and School Violence: essays... Page ONE - TWO - THREE - FOUR

RowanFest 2000 (DragonHills, Georgia) - This week we present a review of now famous Rowanfest festival... Written by Don "Two Eagles" Waterhawk in his own folksy style, this is a wonderful on the scene review... "Daniella and I really didn't realize we would be able to go Rowanfest, and didn't make the final decision until we saw the exit. Spirit made a right turn (along with both of our spirits of course and the van) and away we went. We had called earlier, and asked if we could attend on a very last minutes notice..." Neo-pagan Gatherings, Festivals, and Events
a new series By Patricia Telesco
My mother always told me "If you want something done, find a busy person"... Turns out she was, as always, correct. Trish Telesco is not only a busy person but one that DOES effect change in our community with her many books (30 is it?), lectures and consistent involvement in just about all things Pagan. These days festivals and gatherings are popping up everywhere and all of them continue to grow in strength and attendance. Trish has attended numerous festivals all over the globe and brings to you, years of observations and "must have" tips for both the veteran and new festival attendee.
The Witches' Voice is honored to present this critical and informative guide to Pagan Festivals by Trish Telesco. This page is being launched as the index page for this series, so look for new additions on a regular basis. Bless YOU Trish for what you have done and what you continue to do for us all!
Topics available as of this writing...
Festival FAQ's - Festival season is blossoming like the earth itself, and the number of gatherings and events around the world is growing likewise. So this is the perfect time to examine some basic helps and hints that will make everyone's festival more enjoyable. To start this series, we'll go over a few of the FAQ's that come to festival coordinators and speakers alike... Bless YOU Trish for this valuable resource for the Neo-Pagan community!
Fire Safety - When people are enjoying themselves at festivals sometimes little things get neglected. One thing in particular is fire safety. Indoor events, while lacking in a ritual fire, still contain candles (usually) and most buildings have very strict rules to which everyone attending should be contentious in following. For example, some hotels do not allow "open flame" this means a candle...
Reservation Roulette - All festivals, lectures, workshops, and similar events have a point person who handles reservations. One of the things that's really sad, however, is that very few pagans are good about making advance reservations for just about anything! No matter where I travel I hear comments like this one: "well we have 15 people signed up, only 2 have paid...
Pet Peeves - Neo-pagans and witches are notorious animal lovers. This isn't a bad thing, but there times and places for our creature features, and times when animals are best kept at home. Since I know that this article will cause a flurry of pro and con responses, let me state emphatically that I love animals, but I don't always love them at...
Serving those that Serve - While this really applies to our community all the time, not just at festivals, one thing of which we could use more are helpful hands. No one wants to see a festival coordinator, his or her staff, speakers, healers, and visionaries burn out because their needs are overlooked. So, when you have time, give something back to those that serve...
Festival FAQ's (part II) - I notice a lot of people with athames and other magickal gear at events. How should these be treated? With the utmost respect. Don't touch anything without first asking. Just because it's sitting somewhere, this isn't an open invitation for people to pick up an item and tinker with it. Please treat other people's goods with the same courtesy as...
Helpful Hints for Camping events - I notice a lot of people with athames and other magickal gear at events. How should these be treated? With the utmost respect. Don't touch anything without first asking. Just because it's sitting somewhere, this isn't an open invitation for people to pick up an item and tinker with it. Please treat other people's goods with the same courtesy as...
Merchanting at Gatherings, Events & Festivals - For those of us in the community who need to pay bills, and who have a pagan-friendly business, merchanting is a great opportunity to cover a festival's costs and offer a service to the community. Nonetheless, many of us don't know where to begin to be successful at merchanting. This list should help: Contact the event coordinator EARLY to get...
Matters of Etiquette - No matter the type of event you're attending, there are general unspoken rules of pagan etiquette that should be followed contientiously. Many of these rules come under the heading of common sense, but that all too often is in short supply! Magickal Tools & Altars: At nearly any event there will be other people's magickal tools, jewelry, drums, wands, walking sticks...
Powerful Coven/Group/Altar Shots Wanted Since day one the Witches' Voice has featured many of the beautiful faces of our community. If you have a fabulous shot of your coven or group, feel free to email it to us. We'd love to celebrate your magic. We also ask that you include the names (left to right), make sure the folks in the photo are cool with being on the Voice and include the URL of your Coven/Groups Website (if you have one).
|Web Site NOTES: It is worth noting that Witchvox is really two sites in one...|
Witchvox.com is the main site and the one that delivers the front door pages and over 3 millions words from the community itself. Witchvox.com is NOW hosted by Drak.net and its server is located somewhere in Nevada, USA. To get a feel for the 1,000 plus pages available... Visit our Site Map Index.
WitchVox.net hosts all of our networking pages (Pagans, Events, Groups, Shops and thousands of Pagan Web Sites), our submission forms and the extremely popular Wren's Nest News. WitchVox.net is our own server, hosted by MiceTrax Digital Magic and is located in Clearwater, Florida. NOTE: Sadly, while we were away in Kansas, this server did crash and was down for 2.3 days... This situation is now resolved and preventative measures have been taken so that this doesn't happen again.
In the coming days we will be doing our review of the Heartland Spiritual Gathering that happened this past weekend just north of Kansas City, Kansas at breath-taking Camp Gaea.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to so many of you that believe in this mission... You have defied the odds and made sure that this Voice stays alive. You ARE the Witches' Voice.
In Your Service,
Wren, Fritz, Peg, Dio and Christina
