Pagans Here, Pagans There...Pagans, Pagans Everywhere!

There be giants in the land! Well, at least at some of the UK festivals that Brian Botham has covered for us here at TWV. We just received the picture that you see on the splash page and a review of the Beltaine Bash 2000 held in London. The 'Pagans in the U.K.' networking section is the fourth largest segment hosted in the Witches of the World pages and we are thrilled to finally have some 'local correspondents'-Thanks, Michah!- covering events and news from across the water. If you have some news from YOUR country, we would love to help you to share it with the rest of the pagan world.

One of the highlights of Beltaine Bash 2000 was a presentation by Ronald Hutton on the topic of the 'Burning Times'. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Prof. Hutton's work, we here at TWV highly recommend all of his books. His latest work, 'Triumph of the Moon-A History of Modern Pagan Witchcraft' (Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-820744-1) really should be on every pagan's 'must read' list for this summer. "The title is intended to reflect the way in which this religion honours and embodies certain aspects of the world-most prominently the feminine, the night, the wild nature-which had been subordinated, feared or derided in Western culture since the triumph of Christianity, and in some respoects since the dawn of history." -(Ron Hubburd, Preface, "Triumph of the Moon").

And speaking of crossing the waters...

Stonehenge: Unplugged!
(Er, that is, Unfenced!)

Witchvox Media Coordinator, Peg Aloi, and our dear friend and pagan photographer, Berta Daniels, will be travelling to England this coming week to attend the open Solstice at Stonehenge. Peg says:

As many may recall, last year's Solstice was the occasion of some decidedly unruly behavior, resulting in 23 arrests after more than 400 visitors climbed over the fences to reach the standing stones. Normally, the stones are not accessible and are confined within fences that separate visitors by several dozen yards. Druid groups and others who apply for special access are usually allowed access to the Stones themselves at the time of Solstice or for other rites, as long as they go through the proper channels to gain permission for entry. Last year's debacle occurred when those without special permission wished to access the stones, anyway. The National Trust and English Heritage, as well as the Wiltshire constabulary (i.e. the police who patrol the locality) have done their best to prevent damage to the Stones through vandalism.

Stonehenge is a popular tourist attraction, but visiting it amid crowds of people is not the most magical way to experience the grandeur and mystery of the stones. It was therefore with great pleasure that we learned this year's solstice will feature FREE AND OPEN ACCESS TO THE STONES FOR EVERYONE from 11:30 PM to 7:30 AM on Solstice, June 20, 2000. This may seem unusual given last year's problems, but apparently the decision was reached that free and open access was a better deterrent to vandalism than trying to enforce the limited access policy. Pagan and Druid groups in England have long been advocates of an 'open fence' policy and if all goes well this year, perhaps this event will mark a profound change in the way people are able to experience the magic of Stonehenge.

When I learned about the open solstice I immediately wanted to go: I have travelled to England before several times and have missed it dearly. But I did not think it was feasible in terms of money, time, etc. But once I told Berta my plan and jokingly suggested she come along and take photographs, she was all over it! We plan to cover this major event as a mainstream and pagan media event and are going to try to sell articles and photos to help offset the cost of our trip. Also, thanks to 'the kindness of strangers' whom I have networked with over the Internet, we will be hosted on many of our nights there in peoples' homes, many of them fellow pagans or musicians like myself. We have also arranged to attend a Sacred Sites conference in Oxfordshire, and will be joining the British Druid Order for their solstice rites on June 24th. We also hope to visit other sacred sites (Avebury, the Uffington White Horse, Waylands Smithy, the Rollright Stones, Glastonbury, and a neolithic fort at Dochester-on-Thames). We might also make it to Bath, North Wales and wherever else our travels take us! We will be there twelve days in all, June 14 through June 26.

We look forward to networking with UK witches, pagans and Druids as much as possible! Any people who would like us to contact them so we can get together should email me before Wednesday June 14th.

Blessings to all at Litha!

Media Coordinator - Witches Voice

Just in case anybody was wondering,
Tristan informs us that: "This year the SUMMER SOLSTICE is Tuesday, June 20th at exactly 8:48pm EST; that is the exact time that the Sun enters Cancer. This is known as Midsummer or in the Ancient times as 'Litha'." So set your sundials accordingly! For more information on Midsummer/Litha, check out Mike Nichol's excellent article, A Midsummer's Celebration.

Closer to home, Trish Telesco continues to spin out more festival related tips and topics. This week, we are proud to add two new entries to our revamped Dancing the Fires festival primer. Check out the new easy-to-print format and enjoy, KidCraft and Workshops Anyone? This section is an important one and our web weaving guru, Fritz, took some time this week to give it the polishing that it needed and the expansion that it deserves. With a new sidebar index to the articles, a white background for your printing pleasure and now 12 chapters in depth, this resource has rapidly become one of our most popular browsing sections. We can't thank Trish and the other contributors enough for all of their hard work and dedication!

Leslie Dauterman Needs your Healing Energy...
This just in from PCCO

Leslie Dauterman- who many of you may know from Summerset or other PCCO events where she was in charge of children's workshops had a severe cerebral hemorrhage on Friday 6/9/00.

She is currently in the hospital in critical condition.

This is the third such incident she's had in 20 years(about one each decade), however it is by far the worst as none of the others caused her to lose consciousness. The doctor basically gave Leslie's dad and myself a range of possible outcomes from complete recovery to death. He wouldn't assign probabilities. If anyone can pull through this Leslie can, but she needs all the good words with the Gods she can get, so please send whatever energies she can. Today is our ninth anniversary of being together.

Blessed Be
The Pagan Community Council of Ohio

The WitchVox Staff in honored to do what we can to help... Your healing magick is appreciated during this critical time.

In the coming days, we will continue to bring you the latest news and information from all over the pagan world. YOU can help by writing on what is happening in your area. So many pagans from across the miles and from across the years working together is what has brought us to this point in history. Networking the many diverse pagan communities together will bring us into the future. And what will that next chapter hold? The good news is that WE-you, me, all of us- get to decide. Our future will indeed be what we and the pagan children of tomorrow make it.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to the many of you that believe in, contribute to and continue to support this mission in your own heartfelt ways...You ARE the Witches' Voice.

Wren, Fritz, Peg, Dio and Christina
