Happy Beltaine!
(Happy Samhain 'down under')

Greetings Witches, Wiccans and Pagans,

Walking along the shoreline of the small pond, Wren was checking to see if any grateful birds had left her some feathers in thanks for their morning breakfast treats. There were no feathers that day, but something else caught her eye. The sun glimmered through the shallow inch or so of smooth, clear water onto the pale fine silt which cushioned the edge of the pond from the forest of green rushes. There preserved as clearly as dinosaur footprints in fossilized shale were the tracks of a wandering white ibis. How long they had been there? There was no way to tell. A minute? An hour? A day? Whatever the time frame, the ibis had come and gone. But he had left behind a gift that was boundless in its very simplicity. He didn't know it was going to be a gift. He was simply coming and going in the routine of his ibis life. And so it is with some gifts. We really don't know when we will find one-or when we may be able to give one. In our own comings and goings, sometimes we too leave our gifts unawares.

To the ancient Egyptians, the ibis was a sacred bird. Representative of Tehuit/Thoth, the ibis embodies the attributes of that God. Thoth serves in Osirian myths as the vizier (chief advisor and minister) of Osiris and is the messenger of the Egyptian Gods. He is a God of the moon, of time, magic, and writing. He is considered the inventor of hieroglyphs which he then taught to mankind. And Wren can see why this connection can be made: Ibis prints indeed look like some ancient cuneiform-type script.

As in all of the 'Wren's Nature Tales', there is more to this story than a bunch of bird tracks. (Otherwise, it wouldn't really be a 'tale', now would it?) Earlier in that very same day, Wren had to make a trip to the post office in order to ship off the until-now-delayed three boxes of books for the WARD Prison Ministry. Now three boxes of books are pretty darn heavy and Wren's arms are pretty darn spindly, so she did what any self-respecting Witch looking at three heavy boxes of books would do: a spell. Just a little one. Just a little one that might garner up some help once she actually got to the post office. In short, she was looking for someone to offer to carry at least one of those boxes in for her. (She would never ask someone to do what she wasn't willing to do herself. She'd carry two. All she needed was someone to carry the other one. ) Wren loves it when a spell comes together! Sure enough and thank the Gods, a nice young man saw her struggle in with the three boxes and dashed over to help. Yay! Thanking him profusely and giving him her very best 'you're a lifesaver smile', she got the boxes off and drove to her next errand-of-the-day: the food store.

Wheeling down the snack aisle (Fritz has his needs.), she was checking out the chips section when she heard a voice say, 'Can you help me?" Turning back, Wren saw a small elderly woman on the other side of the aisle. "Can you reach the raisin bread on the top shelf for me, " she asked. Well, of course, Wren could and she did. The little woman thanked Wren profusely and gave her what was probably her biggest 'you're a real lifesaver' smile. They chatted a bit more and them each went their separate aisles. Wren returned home, Fritz got his chips and all was right with the world.

It was only later that day-while she was contemplating the Zen of ibis tracks- that Wren realized exactly what had happened. Wren had started a chain of events off with her little spell. She had, she readily admits, been thinking of something for her own benefit and the benefit of her spinal vertebrae. But knowing magick the way that she does, she should not have been surprised (And in fact, she wasn't really surprised at all.) to find that magick has a way of keeping the scales even. And since Maat, the Egyptian Goddess in charge of justice and balance, just happens to be the wife/sister of Tehutu/Thoth, this whole thing was probably pretty much inevitable. (Do you happen to hear the music from the theme song of "The Twilight Zone' playing in the background, too?)

We just never really know when what we do, where we go or what we hope for will impact someone else's path. Many people go through life wishing to be rich or famous or to do something 'big' that will really make a difference in the world. They are often frustrated or discouraged when it seems that these things do not come to be. They come to feel that maybe they are not really 'gifted' in any special way. But they would be wrong. They just haven't been in that place yet where they can look back and see the tracks left by their passing. They haven't seen the smiles or nods of approval or looks of appreciation that others have already cast their way simply because they were too busy looking for that 'giftedness' somewhere else. They haven't seen the magickal tracks of an ibis in their lives yet.

Everyone is gifted is some special way. The 'bigness' or 'smallness' of a gift is an illusion of measurement that humans have created for the gratification of an earthly ego. In the real spiritual Universe, a gift is simply a gift is simply a gift. And in the spiritual Universe-where energy will balance itself and where the circle will be completed- the giver becomes both the gifted and the gift.

Wren's Grandma Mae always said, "If something good has happened to you, if someone has done something special for you, the best way to thank the Universe is to pass it on." Since she also made an incredible magical apple pie that no one has ever been able to duplicate to this day, Wren figures that Grandma Mae probably knew what she was talking about on this point as well.

"Pass it on."

May The God/ess Bless the Youth!

Here at TWV, we have been blessed with many emails of support from other faiths ALL in the name of love and respect. Here at the Witches' Voice we have always believed that we must never allow the fringe of any religion (including our own) taint our picture of the whole. Today we received the following...
    Mr. Walker/Mr. Fritz

Thank you so much for the information your web page has given me. I attend a Christian school, and am a strong Christian, but i believe that God's love is not exclusively for Christians. No one knows this mind of God, so who are we to judge? Anyways, I would like to let you know that with the help of your page, I was able to open the eyes of many Christians. The Christian links that you featured (particularly outraged my classmates, not only about the view of pagans.

Christianity is about love and forgiveness, and while studying your religion, i have found that they aren't so terribly different.

On behalf of my classmates and friends, i would like to apologize for the twisted, hateful, and destructive minds out there that pervert my religion and persecute yours.

    Sincerely yours,

Bless you Jessica and your classmates for showing more maturity and understanding than so many of our elders. - There is hope for this world because of YOU!

Wren's Nest... Article# 3,000 to be Posted this Week!

Allow me to the first to thank the beautiful Wren Walker for her dedication in bringing us timely pagan related news via Wren's Nest. This week Wren will post her 3,000th news clip and although we have seen many websites attempt to "do the news", no one has been faithful to this commitment of service. Wren has and has for 4 strait years... thank You Wren, thank you from us all.

Wren spends a great deal of time researching current news events that may be of interest or concern to Witches, Wiccans and Pagans. This page is a convenient way for the Witches' Voice to keep you updated on the latest news, commentaries and issues that affect our community.

If it relates to the NeoPagan community, chances are... You'll find it at Wren's Nest on the Web. If you are aware of a craft-related news clip, feel free to email Wren

A Piece about Homosexuality, naturally.
by Drew Burdon

"The only thing, I've recently discovered, that is worse than being hated is nobody caring if you're in the room or not. I'd much rather someone yelled abuse at me than nobody even to look in my direction. Like I don't even exist to them. It hurts worst when those people who used to be closest to you are doing this to you. The gods help you if you dare to shine. Everything is perfect at the start. Then everybody discovers little things that they don't agree with and this is the beginning of the end. Respect turns into familiarity which dies as intolerance without anybody remembering when or why. And not caring, which is to me, the saddest thing of all".

"Being treated with the highest indifference has a profound effect on even the most self-assured of people. As each day passes and nobody looks at you when you're sitting in a group, or the person popping their head round the door to see who's watching TV leaves without saying a word when they discover it's just you, you begin to question your worth to society and eventually begin to stay away from people to avoid bringing upon yourself the passive cruelty they radiate. As if they want to flay away your self esteem without the guilt that comes by doing it with harsh words. With absolutely no possibility of admitting as much to themselves they delight in seeing your light dim as your happiness and motivation fade away with your smiles as you're brought back down to your proper place beneath their level of achievement and sociability". -- Click HERE for the rest of this piece.

Notes from a WebCrafter
You are MORE Magickal that you Know!

Blessed Beltane and Happy Samhain (down under) to all,

This past week was one riddled with much fever and passion at TWV. We made many changes throughout the site including tweaks, polishing and additions. I will spare you the details and move on to the "juicier subjects".

30 Million? Really?: This week will be one of THREE's for the Witches' Voice. Later this week we will pass the 30 Million pages viewed milestone (approximately 182 million "hits"). Also this week, Wren's Nest will post its 3,000th article! Your website has been very busy.

You made this happen, showing that this wonderful community can come together and celebrate a powerful spiritual path and you did this without any advertising. Thank YOU! TWV exists and has flourished because of your words, your magick and your passion. We are a young/old religion with lots of growing pains but our roots and strong and our place in history is a given.

Rough spots in the Road: As predicted, this past weeks Pagan Perspective's question smoked out the number one concern of our community. You guessed it, biggest internal problem is the issue of "More Pagan than Thou" (see comments).

It amazes me that this continues to be a problem, yet it seems to be a larger problem than ever. The simple concept of the "work speaks for itself" is lost on so many. Yes, too many in this community feel the need to Lord/Lady over the rest of us. To this mindset I can only say... Grow up!, get some professional help and check back with us when you want to actually BE a part of something wonderful.

As Wren notes below, her favorite quote from last weeks question (related to problems in/outside our community) is "Who needs a 'Them' when we have us?" It is clear that, in your face, insecure claims of... "my power", "my fam trad", "my training", "my charisma", "my degrees", "my years of service" (to me!) ARE actually starting to get boring... These claims are extremely sad to witness, yet permeate the persona of too many in our midst. You can give these folks YOUR power or not... As always you can either empower them or not.

Don't tell us! Do Show us!

So who IS special in the Pagan Community? Turns out we ALL are special! Trouble is, few realize that there ARE valuable skills and talents that are equal to that of Priests/Priestesses, Pagan Authors and "famous" web site people. Many chase these few positions, even if it is NOT their nature! Why? I haven't a clue. I will tell you this, witchvox will continue to celebrate the diverse and numerous talents of this community as we have over the past 5 years. We believe that the Tribal model is the correct one.

Until many in this community actually embrace and understand the simple concept of "correct and for the good of all" and really care about new seekers and those that are different than they are, we will never be any more special than any other group in the world. I DO BELIEVE that this WILL HAPPEN in time! It IS that hope that motivates Wren and I to work 60 hours a week each, to serve this community via this website.

Trish Telesco sent this 'round on a email list a few weeks ago, and although TWV doesn't typically post loosely credited material to me this piece sez it all.

It's not WHAT you are ... It's What You Do!
by Oriah, Mountain Dreamer
  • It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.
  • It doesn't interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.
  • It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children.
  • It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.
  • It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.
  • It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain! I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it, or fix it. I want to know if you can be with JOY, mine or your own; if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, or to remember the limitations of being human.
  • It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. I want to know if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy. I want to know if you can see beauty even when it is not pretty everyday, and if you can source your life on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon.

So YES, the work really does speak for itself. Everybody IS a star and one that has the potential to shine brightly.

This tune features a burning solo by Reeves Gabriels (yes, the same guy that IS David Bowie's Guitarist and co-writer) ... To experience this mp3 treat visit our CFOTD give-a-way pages and check out THIS IS MASSIVE!

  • Something Powerful/New from Isaac Bonewits?: Yes something IS coming, stay tuned to this column for more info in the weeks to come.

  • Beltane at Boyd Hill May 3-5: Wren and I are honored to announce that we will be attending Florida Pagan Gathering in St. Pete, Florida this coming weekend. Featured guest will be the incredible R.J. Stewart! We are only able to attend for a few hours on Saturday, but are excited about connecting with the wonderful Pagans that we have met there in the past. To Quote their listing here "This will be a major festival Celebrating the Rites of Spring FPG style! There will be many varied workshops by the authors and local teachers . Inspiring rituals, healing circle, drumming circles that we have become so well known for! We have become a large extended family over the many years of festivals beginning with Freedom Fest. Join us in celebrating the unity of the pagan Community of Florida".

Wren and I have a 10:00 workshop scheduled and will hang out briefly before we must take off. For more info on this festival stop by our Florida Events Page.. SpiralScouts: Just look what you can Earn?
Do Pagans even have Youth programs? The answer is: Yes, we do. Not many as yet-modern, public Paganism is only fifty years old, after all-but we do have some groups who are expanding outward to reach not only other Pagans in need, but also to the general populace at large.

The creation of a nationwide Pagan oriented scouting program, known as SpiralScouts (TM) has been announced by the Aquarian Tabernacle Church of the Seattle (Washington) area, to fill the void left by prejudicial treatment of other established children's programs. It is formally incorporated at Imbolc, 2001, and an appropriate venture for the new millennium.

SpiralScouts, a program for girls and boys working, playing and learning together, has existed within the church to benefit member's children for over a year. Recently word about it spread on the internet and, due to the great demand, it has been formalized into an expanded program under the name SpiralScouts International, Inc., a nonprofit subsidiary of the ATC. SpiralScouts supplies leadership handbooks, awards, merit badges and pins, embroidered shoulder patches, and activities handbooks to make the program work for you on a local basis.

CMA Beltaine 2001 Festival
(2,000 visits in its FIRST WEEK)
Attendance:900+, April 12-15, 2001 (Fayette County, Texas)
Review by Don Waterhawk

This week TWV is honored to present a glowing review of what was clearly an magickal gathering of Pagans in Fayette County, Texas. Since Wren and I have experienced the magick of a CMA festival (Samhain 1997), we were anxious to receive this review. Don Waterhawk makes some pretty big claims in this review and only those that have experienced Don's truth know that he is a no BS guy. It's important to note that over the past 20 years Don has attended something like 200 Pagan festivals (all over the America), so you can be assured that his 'claims' are based from some real references. Our phone conversation with Don and Dee, upon their return last week, stirred our yearning to return to the magick of a CMA festival and the wonderful Pagans there in. Until then we will celebrate Texas magick via this wonderful review. Thanks Don and hugs to all our friends "deep in the heart of Texas".

Exerpt: Well... we packed; we left; and we drove 20 hours deep into the heart of Texas. What the hell were we thinking? Leaving our home in warm pleasant Florida to go to... Texas? I never knew that there were Pagans in Texas. I envisioned being welcomed by a group of people on horseback wearing hats, guns and maybe tie-dyed leather chaps. Wrong... ! We pulled onto the land, were warmly greeted by a young lady (not wearing a cowboy hat, no guns, and a tie-dyed T-shirt... we were safe), and told to follow the road and to look for someone wearing a radio. We did, drove onto some of the most beautiful landscape I have seen, found lots of people wearing radios, and four hours later decided that the drive was not as long as we had thought because of what we had arrived to. You Call it May Day, We call it Beltane
by Peg Aloi

"Somewhere, I must have learned about May Baskets. I think my favorite third grade teacher mentioned them briefly in Social Studies class (she often talked about holidays and their origins), and then I wanted to find out more about this wacky custom. I was a precocious reader as a kid so it may have been almost anywhere: the Encyclopedia Britannica, Woman's Day magazine, maybe even Playboy. I don't recall where, but I know once I learned about the custom of giving them to someone special, I was determined to make one and leave it in secret for my favorite third-grade teacher, Miss V".

"I took a small box (about half the size of a shoebox) and glued lavender construction paper to it. I also fashioned a handle out of the same paper, gluing it to both sides. I cut out flower petals shapes in different colors and glued those on, too. Very tasteful, I thought. I cut some daffodils and lilacs from the yard, and put them inside. I had already asked my aunt if she could drive me over to her house, having cleverly looked up her address in the phone book earlier. (Now, these days we would call such behavior something less innocent than childlike admiration; we might call it, oh, stalking). As we drove up with the basket to my teacher's house, at around 6 pm, I found myself thinking, "Gee, what if she sees me?" I got out of the car, ran on tiptoe (as if that would make me less visible) and put it on her porch. As I turned, the front door opened".

"As luck would have it, I was busted: by Miss V. herself! She saw me, then the basket, and figured it out. She smiled and thanked me and said it was very sweet of me. I was mortified that she found me out. But then the next day in school, she made me a card with flowers on it. The front said "Thank you" and the inside said "for delighting my day with a May Basket." So I got to put that card on my desk like a little teacher's pet. Of course, I did not think that at the time; at the time I was simply very proud. And realized if I had not gotten "busted" she might never know who brought the May Basket, and I'd have my secret, but only that. This way, maybe the other kids would think of making May Baskets for someone: a teacher, a parent or grandparent. Of course, all I knew was I made something cool and gave it to someone special". Pagan Perspectives
WitchVox Question of the Week!

Last week, we asked...

What Are The Greatest Challenges That Pagans Face Today? - Judging by the length of some of the replies to this question, you have a LOT to say about both the external and internal challenges facing the Pagans of today! General public opinion about Pagans and Pagan beliefs- while changing for the better- still has a way to go toward widespread acceptance. Internally, Pagans in general seem fed up with the petty struggles for power AKA the notorious 'Witch Wars'. {Favorite quote: "Who needs a 'Them' when we have us?"} Some waxed philosophical about the need for Paganism to develop a real theology, a real Answer to the questions of Life-and indeed-the need to first find out what question that Paganism is trying to answer. Challenges remain, both from within and from without. How we will meet these challenges remains to be seen, but at least-if our focus group is any indication-we are seriously considering our options. View the Responses.

This week, we ask the question:

Who Are Your Gods? -Who are your Gods/Old Ones/Ancestors? Did you choose Them or did They choose you? Do you believe/perceive Them as merely evolved Beings-or are They indeed the all-powerful Masters of the Universe? Do you believe/perceive that Gods/Goddesses/Ancestors/Old Ones are extensions of your higher self, separate and distinct Beings of personality or 'all Gods and Goddesses are One'? In your times of need, do you believe that They can overturn the Laws of Karma/The Fates/The Norns for you? Why do you suppose that some prayers/pleas/invocations are seemingly ignored while others may be answered? Do you feel that the Gods/Ancestors/Old Ones may sometimes 'use' you to accomplish some greater plan than you may be humanly aware of? How do you feel about that? What has been your most powerful, meaningful or life-altering encounter with Them? - Post YOUR Opinion or view the Responses of others.

In Closing...

"Whatever we have been given is supposed to be given away again. Or if it is kept, something of similar value should move on in its stead..The only essential is this: the gift must always move. There are other forms of property that stand still, that mark a boundary or resist momentum, but the gift keeps going."-(Lewis Hyde-The Gift: Imagination and the Erotic Life of Property)
