This Weeks update: Wren and I humbly offer our thoughts on this past week's nightmare. Our focus, as always, is to point you to the passion, magick and wise words of your brothers and sisters of the craft. We have a community to be proud of and one that was clearly there for so many in this time of need. Visit the 911 America: The Days After Forum to share your thoughts and to list the magickal workings in your area (link below).

Did Your World Change Too?

Tuesday was simply another ordinary morning. Fritz and I shared a cup of coffee while C-Span played in the background and the kitties were busy tidying up their paws. Fritz left for work and after I made the bed, I went back for that all-important second cup of Joe. The subject being discussed on C-Span had changed to one that I wasn't particularly interested in, so I began to flip through the other news channels. And right then, somewhere between the split second that separates one press on a button from another, my world changed.

Just how much that it had changed wasn't apparent at first. By the time that Fritz called in from his office, several initial reports had already been recorded. 'It was a small plane.' It was a large plane.' It was a bomb, an explosion.' I don't know what happened.' It was after my second call to Fritz- the one that I made right after I saw the second plane hit the second tower- that it became clear that this was no accident. This was a deliberate act. And as the two towering buildings that were the landmark and pride of the World Trade Center burned, I knew that the world had that Tuesday morning become a very different place.

How can you put into words such things as no words were ever meant to express? How can you understand what defies understanding or cope with what seems both so very real and yet so unbelievable that your mind cannot hold onto any one thing long enough to provide any equilibrium? And just how are you supposed to steady your own racing heart when you know- when you can feel- that suddenly and without warning so many other hearts have just been broken? And still it was not over.

Fritz came home for the day and we did what many of you did- we watched the news programs and learned that the horror that we imagined did not come even close to the horror of what the reality had become. My world has changed. Fritz's world has changed. Your world has changed. Our world has changed. That is the new reality that we all faced on a Tuesday morning. And still it is not over.

For the people who lost loved ones, it still is not over. For those whose eyes peer out from a blank or tear-stained face and hopefully thrust the pictures of their missing husbands, wives, children, friends, co-workers, in front of everyone that they meet, it still is not over. For the brave and exhausted firemen and women, the military servicepeople, the police officers, the city workers and all of the countless civilian volunteers sifting through tons upon tons of rubble, it still is not over. And we all hope and we pray that anyone who is still alive under all of that concrete can hear us when we whisper to him or her, "Hang on. Don't give up on us because we will not give up on you. We have begun the search for you and it still is not over."

And as the search goes on, people from all walks of life and from all religious faiths are coming together to pray and to comfort and to remember. In large public services and small private devotions, in churches and wooded groves and in living rooms and on the streets, Pagans and Christians and Muslims and Hindus and Buddhists and atheists are lighting candles, wiping away tears and sharing each others pain and grief. And even though a few hateful voices here and there have tried to rend this unity of spirit asunder, still we continue to hold on, still we continue to share, still we continue to hope. And in the midst of concrete dust and flickering candles and national emergencies, we have come together as a nation and as a world. And still it is not over.

For we have only just begun to realize our combined strength. We have only just begun to realize the possibilities for cooperation and trust that we may now develop with other peoples and with other nations. We have only just begun to believe that yes, while it is true that the world has been changed, perhaps it is also true that through our shared grief, our shared challenge and our new-found shared resolve, we can tranform what was meant to make us smaller into something that makes us bigger and better.

And to those who changed our world on Tuesday morning, we would say only this: We don't know as yet who and what we will deploy in order to track you down. We don't know as yet in what form our desire for justice and/or our need for retaliation upon you will manifest. We don't know as yet what the cost will be and we don't know how long it may take. But we do know that we will find you. This is not over. It has only just begun.

And finally, we have to say to our beloved Pagan/Heathen communities: If it were not for you, there would be no words here for you to read today. On Wednesday, Fritz and I just had nothing left to give and we were simply going to put up a black page and leave it at that. But then one or two of you posted your words on the forum. Then tens of you began to post. Then hundreds of posts and thousands of words came forth from Pagans and non-Pagans. From all over the world, you came. And you shared not only your words, but you shared your actions and invited others to meet together for vigils and prayers and magickal workings. And you posted resource information, addresses for relief agencies and other contact and networking points. We thank you.

And to those of you who have written to us over the years to say thank you or to tell us that something here at TWV inspired you in some small way, we say: That in our own time of travail, it has been YOU who have inspired us. And we thank you once again. Pagans have come forward and have shown themselves to be peoples of compassion, of power, of love and of strength. And all who would rise up against such peoples cannot prevail. We are stronger, wiser and more powerful than we were on that Tuesday morning that seems so long ago. And it's not over yet. We have just begun.

Since 9/11 We have been pointing you the 911 America: Forum to note your thoughts and magickal workings.
This week we will continue to do the same, Tell us all what this all of this means to you.

Notes from a Pagan WebCrafter
A World Changed forever...

Greetings Witches, Wiccans and Pagans,

Tuesday morning I got up, did some quick daily WV maintenance, caught up on email and noted that the vote for whether this page should be black or white was dead even. At 8:30, I headed into work... When I arrived I got the news. Ouch, a small plane had hit the WTC. Within minutes, I heard the reality. Knowing that Wren was up and probably watching CNN as part of her morning routine, I called home. She told me what was really going on and even as we were taking, she saw the second plane hit the second tower. We were speechless. Already feeling horrible due to a high fever, I headed home. Like most of the world, we watched the various news channels and sat stunned trying to digest what was happening.

Talking through the Terror: At 2:30pm on 911, Wren -recalling the shocked reactions and repercussions from previous events like Columbine- mentioned that perhaps we should put up a forum so that folks could express their feelings... It was a must do! I hit my computer and noticed that since earlier in the day, we had received over 70 pcs of email from Pagans noting vigils, their thoughts and, of course, their horror. It was clear that a forum to feature this info had to be done immediately. 22 Minutes later, it was up on our own server and was quickly swamped with traffic. So many of you blew us away with your magick, your words and your staging of impromptu events in your area.

In past 5 days, the 911 America: The Days After Forum has received over 38,000 visitors and featured nearly 800 notices of vigils, magickal workings, personal stories and expressions of horror and disbelief. Since Tuesday afternoon, we have received over 1,000 pieces of email from Pagans all over the world expressing their thoughts and noting their events. Given this incredible volume of email, we simply haven't had the time to read them all, let alone respond. We ARE pointing everyone to the 911 forum to express their thoughts and plans. Many prominent and famous members of our community contacted us this week and we encouraged all of them to add to this pool of community thought. Most of them did. So, for thoughts from Famous pagans, just do a simple search on the left panel. Wren also personally invited many folks via several lists that she is on.

Search the Forum: The volume of information that has hit Witchvox in the past 4 days has been staggering and it's important to note that we simply cannot feature all of those who are asking for front page coverage. Nor is it our desire to pick and choose whose cause or words are worthy of special treatment above all others in the community. In fact, all ARE worthy. What we CAN do is give you more powerful tools in order to search out any of the info posted on this forum that is of importance to you. This morning, we redid the forum to include search options for city, state, country, author and by content of the post.
  • What are Pagans in your state/province/territory saying?
  • What are famous Pagans saying to the community?
  • What are the thoughts of different trads and groups?
  • What are British Pagans and those from other countries saying?
  • What vigils and magickal workings are happening in your area?
Feel free to dig/search. I can promise you that you will be moved, inspired and motivated. NOTE: New posts hit the forum every 10 min.

Vigils: So many of you posted magickal workings and vigils that there were just too many for each person to connect with and/or join. The one that seemed to manifest in a big way (from the internet) was the "Friday at 7" candle lighting all over America. Due to the fact that we were being hit with tropical storm Gabrielle at that time, we were not outside trying to light candles in 50mph sustained winds. We have however since 911 been working our best personal magick and will continue to do so for the future. We will project for justice and the rational thinking that is for the good of all. Our magick is strong; so is yours; and so is the magick of all faiths, ALL over the world. It is because of this magick that I know that we will be alright in the long run. There is so much good in this world; there is so much worth fighting for.

Our World changed on 911 and will never be the same... The thirst for blood is high! May the many who are innocent be spared the wrath of the personal politics of the few.

Proudly in Your Service,

Fritz Jung

PS: Witch hugs go out to April Patterson for sending along this background pattern. We plan on flirting with other backgrounds in the weeks to come.

PPS: This Page, Black or White? Until this morning, I had forgotten about this question. Whether this page has a black or white background is about 8 million miles away from what is important these days. But for the record, it was White 246 & Black 242 with passionate statements about readability from both sides. We thank you for your votes and will continue to play with this page over the weeks to come.

Freedom is Hard...
by Wren Walker

Freedom is hard. It's hard to embrace the right to speak of those things that you believe to be utterly right and at the same time embrace the rights of those who speak of things that you believe to be utterly wrong. Freedom is hard.

Freedom is hard. It is hard to believe so much in the power of your own religion or faith and at the same time recognize that other religions or beliefs can possess an equal and valid worth. Freedom is hard.

Freedom is hard. It is hard to watch a community that you care so deeply for tear itself apart over differences of opinion and still believe that it is often those very differences that help to make us stronger. Freedom is hard.

Freedom is hard. In the name of freedom, the world has made peace and waged war. It is hard for those who want peace to hear the shouts of those who demand war. It is hard for those who believe that war is a just cause to hear the pleadings of those who want to give peace one more chance. Freedom is hard.

Freedom is hard. It is hard to love your country with your entire being and yet speak out when you believe that its governmental policies are wrong. It is hard for a government to hear the dissent of its own people and yet realize that if the country is indeed truly to be based upon freedom that this dissent must be heard. Freedom is hard.

Freedom is hard. It is hard to keep the door marked 'the right to individual religious expression' or 'the right to speak' or 'freedom of association' wide open even as those who often feel free to enter these doors themselves would shut them firmly in the face of everyone else. Freedom is hard.

Freedom is hard. It is hard to feel secure and safe without fences and barriers and checkpoints to keep others out, but freedom maintains that such appeals to safety and security too often become the very tools that are used by tyrants to hold their own people prisoner from within. Freedom is hard.

Freedom is hard. It is hard to still value justice when justice is so often delayed. It is hard to continue to believe in liberty when so often others take advantage of that liberty in order to promote a personal agenda or to injure, berate or even destroy another. Yet freedom requires both justice and liberty somehow be preserved. Freedom is hard.

Freedom is hard. And in those days and months ahead, America and the entire world is going to see and experience and learn just how hard it really is to be free. Freedom will demand much of us. Freedom will challenge every deeply held conviction that we possess. Freedom will test our mettle, assault our dogmas, lay siege to our complicity and squelch our impatience. For freedom is never guaranteed as long as there are those who prefer domination, yet freedom itself cannot be imposed upon anyone and still be freedom. Freedom is hard.

But as hard as freedom is, there have always been those who have dreamed of it, written of it, sang of it, fought for it, lived for it and held it so dear that they were even willing to give up their lives for it.

And as hard as that is, as hard as it may become, as long as that same love for liberty continues to burn brightly within us, Freedom will never die.
