It Is Your Destiny...

January naturally leads to reflection here in the Northern Hemisphere. The days are shorter, the weather is colder and the urge to snuggle up throws itself over us like a cozy blanket. We often find our thoughts wandering on such days. As the minutes tick by, we drift out of our chairs in front of the television sets and begin to wander past the reality checkpoint of the person we are now into the realms of the person that we thought we might be. To cut through all of the flowery language: we tend to think a lot. And it was while I was in one of those states of reverie that I found myself musing over a simple four-line verse from the Upanishads:
You are what your deep driving desire is.
As your desire is, so is your will.
As your will is, so is your deed.
As your deed is, so is your destiny.
You are what your deep driving desire is. So what is YOUR deep driving desire? Have you ever asked yourself this question? The answer may not be as easy to articulate as you might first think. Often one's 'deep driving desire' is to be someone special, to make a mark upon the world, to be remembered as someone who has accomplished something important. But would you be comfortable relating such seemingly grandiose desires to the other people around you? Not only would the average person feel very uncomfortable about saying something like that right out loud, we often stifle such ideas even as they arise in our private thoughts. We've been conditioned to be self-effacing, modest and disparaging of not only our aspirations, but also about our real accomplishments. And because we have mixed feelings about words such as 'desire' and 'power', it is hard to think about such terms without wondering if one is sinking into some sort of social psychosis.

And as we reread these four lines, it is easy to see how that danger might indeed become a reality for a person afflicted with a mental or emotional illness. Certainly some religious systems play up those fears of insanity in order to channel 'desires' into the approved venues of the religious dogma. It can thus become a 'sin' to think of oneself as 'special' or capable of accomplishing great things. Such 'legalities' keep people in line, which is, of course one of the most important functions of all religious dogma. Frustrating as it must be for the powers-that-wanna-be though, deep driving desires are not so easily contained. It is indeed fortunate for the human race that they are not.

You ARE what your deep driving desire is. It defines your personality. More importantly, it uncovers your potential. For what we deeply care about we are motivated to see accomplished. People who find that their desire is to eliminate poverty or prevent animal abuse for instance will become involved in civil action or social programs. Someone who has a deep spiritual nature will find ways to express that in their own life and may go on to teach, instruct and guide others to such enlightenment. We often envy those who seem to know at an early age what their mission in this life is. Many more of us struggle for years trying to find our place in the grand scheme of things. Where do we begin to look?

Sometimes when we hear a story or watch a television program or read a book or listen to someone speak, something wells up inside of us that we can't really explain. That is your first clue. Follow that feeling and see where it leads. If people continually say to you that you are a good writer or a compassionate person or a beautiful spirit, think about it and don't just pooh-pooh it away. You became one of those things because your deep driving desire was to BE one of those things. Maybe you just never recognized it as such before. Now that you do, you can go on to perfect those talents and follow your dream.

As difficult as discovering, uncovering or admitting to having a deep driving desire for something may be, the next step can be even more daunting:

As your desire is, so is your will. Yep! You actually have to put that feeling and desire into action. Not when you win the lottery, not when it is safe to put your toe in the water, but right now. For a desire without action is but a pipedream. What you envision in the future will never happen unless you put your will, your energy, behind it. Your kite will not fly unless you take hold of the string and start to run. Rather than imagine that the world would be a better place if only such-and-such happened, get out there and do the such-and-such. Wishing is not willing. Dreaming is not willing. Will is taking your wish, your dream and your deep driving desire and putting it into action. Many Pagans have trouble in spell work when they encounter some ambiguity over intention. My advice? Go back to step one and uncover what your deep driving desire is. Follow that.

As your will is, so is your deed. What our deep driving desire has empowered our will to put into action becomes our deed. A deed is something already accomplished. Here it is. We did it. It is the punctuation mark at the end of our sentence. Our desire and our will has now become something tangible. It has become a manifestation of all of those things that we have thought about while whiling away the minutes in our chairs. Our intention (desire) has gotten its wish because it had the breath (will) to blow out the candles on the cake (deed). Sometimes we don't get them all in the first try. That's okay. Keep blowing. If one has the desire and the will, nothing can stand in the way of the deed becoming manifest. And when in doubt about whether you are still on the right path? You got it: Go back to step one!

As your deed is, so is your destiny. I certainly never set out to be a 'professional' writer or a social and political activist. But early on, I recognized that deep within me burned a desire to help people. As a child, I would stand up to the bullies in the neighborhood when they were picking on the smaller or 'different' kids. I didn't punch them. I reasoned with them in terms that they could understand. Sometimes that even worked. More often, I got beat up, too. But whether I won the bullies over by reason or whether I got pounded on, at the end of the day, I always felt good (Well, except for that Bactine part) because I had stood up for what I thought was right.

And you know, a funny thing happens when you do that. When you start acting upon that which your deep driving desire inspires you to do, you will often find that the universe begins to move in your direction. I 'found' myself in the right place at the right time on more than one occasion. Through just such a 'chance' meeting, I was introduced to Fritz who also 'by chance' was on the path forged from his own driving desire to help someone. Neither one of us had the smallest inkling as to where that chance meeting would eventually lead us. But we shared a common desire, a common vision and were willing to work hard to transform that desire and vision into deed.

To say that this was our destiny... Well, even after admonishing you to claim your own right to become great, I just can't go there...and yet...and yet...Here we are doing what we always dreamed of doing; doing what we love to do; doing that which we trust will make a difference even if it is for just one person. We didn't simply wake up one day and find this all in place. But we did, I believe, wake up each day with a driving desire to help someone burning within our hearts. And we still do.

Our story is not all that unique. We have heard it over and over again from many other people. Many of you have read similar stories right here on this web site. Many of you here ARE the stories. I am convinced that everyone has a story to tell. And I believe that it is important that each and every one of these stories be told. And I trust that in some small way, reading the words on this page will encourage you to believe that there is a deep driving desire that also burns within you.

Find it. Fan it. Fan your own deep, driving and burning desire until it will not let you rest. Then go out and turn it into action. Follow where the path leads you and never look back. Be special. You can do it. You can make a difference. Your destiny already lives within that one small and perhaps hesitant step that you dare to take today.

And you never know... So might the destiny of our one trembling and yet still hopeful world.

In Memory of Linda Batwinski
(received on 1/11 from A.C. Fisher Aldag)

Our beloved friend, high priestess and the kids' "second grandma" passed to the Summerland at 12:41 on Tuesday, 9 January, 2002; after a long illness.

Linda is a long-time member of the Chicago-area Pagan Community, high priestess and teacher of the Pagans of the Woods coven and one of the founders of the Midwest Pagan Council. She was well known & loved at the Pan Pagan Festival as the hostess of the follies, co-hostess of Meet & Greet, and for the delightful children's activities. She was married to Stanley Batwinski for 23 wonderful years. Linda will be sorely missed by us all. -- (Click HERE for memorials and details as they come in)

Witchcraft and the Web: Weaving Pagan Traditions Online
HOT New Book by M. Macha Nightmare

This week, we are honored to announce the release of a new book by M. Macha NightMare. Witchvox regulars will note that we first announced this back in late August, with a tentative release date of November. Obviously that has past but we can now official state that the review copies have been out for a few weeks, there is a wonderful review over at Amazon.com (do a search for Macha Nightmare) and this wonderful book will finally be in stores in two weeks time.

"Guiding the reader from the early days of BBS to today's Web, the book also contains an interesting look at rituals, mailing lists, covens and classes Online. At the same time, the author weaves this information in to the practice of Witchcraft offline. Everything is connected. Facts and experiences in terraspace provide a wonderful look at real versus virtual. The impact of technology on Pagan practices is explored. The author shows quite convincingly that the magick that makes up cyberspace is related to the magick that exists offline.

Very informative with an impressive collection of links, this book does explain the basics of Wicca in a way that will inform those to whom the information is new, while not boring old hands. Comments by friends of the authors with vast Online experience add a lively dimension to the book". - Janet K. Schmidt (Review on Amazon.com)

Many Pagans that have been influential on the Pagan Net over the years are featured in this book. In depth statements by Lhiannon/Jen (founder of Drak.net), Imagicka (the Wiccan/Pagan Times), Sandy Johnson and Mark Kelly (FOTE and the Talking stick net radio site), Abby Willowroot (Goddess 2000), Cat Chapin-Bishop (Cherry Hill Seminary), Sparky T. Rabbit, Carol Maltby, Grey Cat, Tom 'Moose' Dixon, and countless others ARE included and offer their thoughts on both the history of the Pagan net and it's future.

All in all paramount achievement and a must have resource for those curious about Pagan Net. As we write this, Macha is out on a book signing tour in the California communities... To check out her latest appearance schedule visit her beautiful and info packed website at MachaNightmare.com.

David Nelson Offers tips on Broom, Athame and Sword Maintinence
Just added to our Pagan Basics section!

Besom-Broom Care: Whether you use your broom to sweep your home of dust and cobwebs, to help your ceremony or ritual, or simply to decorate your home, you might wonder how to keep your broom in its best condition for years to come. Some broommakers have this advice for you and your broom. -- (Full Article)

Sword/Athame Care: Aside from your broom, few tools need as much special care as your athame and sword. Though mostly ceremonial and decorative, the blades of most athames and swords will be carbon or stainless steel. Both kinds of steel will oxidize, but at different rates.

Carbon-steel blades -- especially if they're being handled frequently -- should be cleaned properly at least every month or two. While stainless-steel blades should be cleaned properly only every six months, if you're unsure which kind of steel your blades are made of, err on the side of caution and presume they're carbon-steel. -- (Full Article)

Pagan Traditions and Paths...
New this Week - Tradiç"o Ibérica

The diversity of thought within the Pagan community can make it difficult to even define Paganism. Here at TWV, we generally accept as Pagan anyone who defines themselves that way, as long as they adhere to the Rede or a similar code of ethics. In an effort to celebrate the variety of Pagan traditions, and hopefully bring a greater understanding of what "Pagan" means both to our community and to the larger world, The Witches' Voice is offering this section on Traditions. In it, we hope to eventually have explanations of all Pagan traditions written by those who practice them.

Of Course We have Witchlings.
This just in from Ginger

This pic from APA's Yule gathering is good, methinks cause it shows the Witchlings. So rarely one sees Pagan children, people often think we don't have any, as a matter of fact one of the quotes from the Pagan Unity Campaign's last year IAM campaign was a white house staffer that asked "you have children" when mentioned to the then president of PUC, that they even received postcards saying "I am a Pagan 2nd grader" (might have been mine, that shock the guy up so bad, LOL)...and Storm had to explain to him, that yes,

Pagans do have Pagan children...Dogs have puppies, cats have kittens, etc. etc. LOL and the only ones in this shot, are mine, Al's and Nessa's so there are no 'parental permission' issues withy'all using it. Blessings,

Wren's Nest v6.0 -- A Hit with 'Nest Fans
WN Pages viewed 2,944,505 times to date

To celebrate the new year we released Wren's Nest V6.0 on 1/1/2002. The feedback has been most positive with the only real complaints being that (now) there are TOO many articles and that we should make it look more unique. We do plan on making it look a bit less like the front end pages and will do that shortly with a new masthead and different color scheme. There are indeed to many articles in the 7 day loop, but this too shall be fixed as soon as we get some time to put a 'governor' on it.

Most of the feedback hailed the speed increase. This was lead by Wren herself, who no longer has to wait 60 seconds just for a new piece to post. The speed increase is directly related to our new server (we are the only site on it) and the change to a multi-threaded backend database.

Still to be added are new fields for a story location (data is already being captured) for future feeds into YOUR state/province/country page, display of url2, user submission thank yous, the ability for you to submit news, and a final overall polishing.

Wren's Nest Light - Also popular is the PDA version of the nest. This no graphics/lean version of the nest is dynamic and feeds PDAs and cell phones the latest spirit news. A Bonus feature is that this version also works well with 386 pcs and other computers from the 80's.

The new URL for Wren's Nest is http://www.witchvox.com/xwrensnest.html

As of this moment... Articles posted in the past 7 days include...

With nearly 3 million Nest section page views it is clear that many in the Pagan community count on Wren's Nest for the latest news... I know that I do. Thanks Honey!

Notes from a Pagan WebCrafter
Growl... Ending the Witchvox.net Drama, Pagan Spammers & Tidbits!

Greetings Witches, Wiccans, Pagans and Heathens!

This past week was a struggle for us here at TWV. In fact, most of 2002 thus far has been frought and wrought with "opportunities" and countless events that have taken time away from serving YOU. Wren and I are basically pathetic optimists by nature, have the smile lines to prove it and are always willing to fight the good fight. As happens in all of the cycles of life, we do know that these squeaky turns of the wheel are only temporary. We also know that no matter what happens during a particular day, no matter how much we get beat down, the very next morning the light will shine again. We can count on it! It is scientifically proven that a positive and healthy mental outlook does speak directly to your physical being. In the morning when you awaken, you immediately start making choices. YOU get to decide. Go for the positives! Shun the negatives.

Ending the Witchvox.net Drama: It all started 10 days ago when our ISP (oasistech.net) made a decision to NOT host DSL connections anymore. A classic example of business at it's worst, Oasis knowingly let Verizon shut down ALL of their ADSL connections (Over a billing dispute? - Funny, we always paid OUR bill). Shutting down the DSL service took hundreds of folks like us off-line (and literally off the net) at 11:11 am on Wednesday. Since the owner of our ISP chose to simply hide rather than reveal the real situation, it took us a few days to figure out what was really going on. In fact, it was another user who contacted us and let us know what was really happening (Thanks, Eddie!). Eddie was hoping to set himself up as an adsl provider and move us all over to new set-up in a day or so. Well, the Verizon machine doesn't do this stuff in a day! By Friday, Eddie passed along the word that it would be more like 10 days to two weeks. At that point, basically the Witchvox networking section was screwed. Late Friday, we made the quick decision to grab a static IP for our home cable connection, immediately transferred the name servers and, as of this writing, it appears that Witchvox.net is coming back all over the world. -- We still can't access it here at the office yet, but the server logs show that over 10 thousand of you have found us again since last night. IF you can't get there right now, please try again tomorrow.

This has been 18 very frustrating months at the mercy of a man who, obviously, couldn't care less about his customers... ADSL became inconvenient for him, so he tossed the lot of us out with no notice and no explantion. In many ways, ending this relationship is a forced blessing. As long as the cable line can hold the traffic, we are actually better off and will save 35 dollars a month for the next few months.

To add insult to injury, it seems that although Oasis Tech knew that this shut-off was coming, they billed us for January anyway. -- To get the bandwidth necessary to serve the 40 gig of traffic (1.1 million pages) that witchvox.net generates MONTHLY, we simply HAD to go with the "Gold" plan. So that's 220 bucks that we will be fighting to get back. HE holds the power, and based on our experience of the past 18 months, I sense that we will have to fight to get our money back. We will be contacting "Eddie' and the other x-customers to weigh out our options.

We would like to take this opportunity to apologize to all of you who really needed to use the Witchvox networking pages during these past three days and couldn't access them. Do know that it has been our mission for the past few months to redo this section in order to actually IMPROVE speed, stability and user friendliness and so we were particularly upset when Oasis' "problem" became our "problem" and then ultimately yours as well .

Pagan Spammers: These past couple of weeks have also seen 3 attacks on our numerous email addresses by Pagan Businesses and one by a Pagan who must be convinced in her own mind that she knows best what YOU should be interested in. They simply stole email addresses from Witchvox in order to to sell their products and agendas. All four are in direct violation of their own ISPs anti-spam policies. I won't waste your time detailing what 'Spam' is if you are lucky enough not to know (see our piece from last year - That Pesky and Obnoxious Unsolicited Email! for an overview), but would like to take this opportunity to thank Witchvox staff member, Steve McMannus, for helping us out with this.

As in the past, we will do everything in our power to stop Pagan Spamming and will permanently remove anyone or any business that is caught stealing email addresses from TWV with the intention of promoting their agenda, selling their products or building "their" email list or Yahoo club membership.

What can YOU do? When a Pagan business or individual grabs your email address WITHOUT your permission, don't simply delete the email, CALL them on this. Email them back and ask them why they assumed that you would be interested and why they added YOUR email to their list without your permission. Always CC in their internet service provider.

NON-Pagan Spam is another issue all together. Do NOT respond to those emails. Call, email or write your Senator or State representative and tell them that you want to see some real laws passed to end this madness. 18 states presently DO have anti-spamming laws. Does Yours?

If you do nothing... They Win! Thanks to the complacency of the 'net communities (both Pagan and not) and some ISPs... They ARE winning! YOU hold the power! We encourage you to use it for the good of all.

Tidbits...
  • This week we hard linked Pagan Paths and Traditions into your Pagan basics pages.
  • Recent 'Wren's Nest' News Clips are now dynamically fed/linked on our splash page... Due to several requests, we have set this up to include a listing from the past 7 days.
  • We hit the Apple computer store yesterday for parts and to our surprise, the new I-Mac was way cooler looking to gawk at in person. I think that Apple may have another hit on their hands.
  • We finally stabilized (Read: figured out how to do) the text encoding for our Pagan Faq pages in both Spanish and French versions.
  • Last week's piece on the big changes of 2001 as seen on the Pagan net rendered a few pieces of response email. We were pointed to a 'net archive site that I had never heard of and that is VERY cool. Check out your fave Pagan site at Internet Archive's Wayback Machine and see what it looked like "all those years ago" -- (Witch Hugs go out to Robert Furtkamp for turning us on to this.)
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to any and all of you who felt that I dissed you because your website category or website was NOT mentioned on last weeks piece on the big changes in the Pagan net in year 2001. Here at TWV, we list nearly 50 categories which index nearly 5,000 websites. As I stated then, there were hundreds of big changes in 2001 and this was not an attempt to cover more than a few of them. No one can do that better than you can... Since that section was down for so many days, last week's Pagan Perspectives question, What changes did you see in the Pagan Web last year?, will stay up for another week so that you will have the chance to personally note the big changes that you witnessed in 2001.

I selfishly project that THIS week, I will be able to spend some time moving this site forward and serving you better. Time is precious 'round these parts, and there is nothing more frustrating for me than wasting it. Except perhaps when some guy (grrrr!) decides to make his problem, everyone's problem.
