News You Can Use..

"Information is power!" - How many times have we heard that one? But it is no less true for the repetition. The sharing and dissemination of information and news is a vital component in society, in politics and in all other facets of our lives. So valuable to the enduring health of freedom did the Founding Fathers of the United States consider the unfettered publication of news, they included the right to a free press in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Those words were a milestone in the history of world governance and despite the years of wear and tear and legal wrangling and attempts to circumvent and to somehow domesticate and thereby tame those radical words; they still stand today.

News is one of the ways by which information is obtained and shared and information is necessary for action. Certainly over the last ten years or so, the Pagan and Heathen communities have come to see its value and have embraced the Internet as perhaps the one breakthrough media form that has helped to connect us across the miles. What happens in California or in Oslo or in Sydney can be shared and spread across the entire network in literal minutes. Certainly the news is a large part of what makes up The Witches' Voice and because of that we have a deep and abiding interest in all things 'newsy' and news worthy.

The Wren's Nest feature developed out of just such an interest and it was an interest not held by we alone. From almost the first days in which we began to post news that we thought might be of some use to the Pagan and Heathen communities, you, our readers and contributors embraced the concept. For contributors, you are. Those of you who have faithfully emailed us articles are a part of the TWV family of newshounds and we simply couldn't do it as thoroughly or as well without your interest and assistance. That more than anything else demonstrated to us that Pagans and Heathens are not only interested in news features, they want to be active participants in the process of information gathering and sharing. Such interest demonstrates not only a high degree of intelligence and education, it also points to a social conscience that reaches beyond the perimeters of just what is 'Pagan' or 'Heathen'. We are indeed now citizens of the world.

According to 1996 Radio News Audience Survey, just under one-half (47%) of the respondents say that they follow the news "almost every day;" an additional one-quarter (24%) say that they follow the news "four or five days a week." Twenty-one percent keep up with the news "two or three days a week;" seven percent do so less frequently. Consistent with findings from RTNDF's 1996 Profile of the American News Consumer survey, interest in news correlated positively with respondents' age and education. College graduates (55%) were more likely than those with some college or less (43%) to follow news on an "almost every day" basis. Respondents 50 to 64 years of age (62%) were twice as likely as those 18 to 34 (32%) to do the same. (The entire report can be viewed here.)

We have always wanted TWV to be more interactive. In the first years, we did have a message board. Sadly, we had to eliminate that venue when it- as many large or more popular message boards are prone to do- disintegrated into a forum for in-fighting and off-topic meanderings. Since that time, we have been further constrained by our sheer traffic volume that bogged down our servers and limited the amount of interactive features that we could add. Happily -- and due entirely to the support from our most generous sponsors -- we now have a multi-processor dedicated server capable of handling that huge amount of bandwidth and we can, once again, begin to develop those interactive features that we feel are so important to any community-based site. It won't be a stand-alone message board (shudder) but we will be bringing back Pagan Perspectives and are introducing weekly polls. You also can now post your comments and opinions on Wren's Nest articles. We hope that you enjoy these new interactive features. Please remember that TWV is a 'family-friendly' site and that it is important to our stated mission of providing educational resources across the spectrum of all age groups that we remain so.

Other Pagan web masters or site owners often ask us if they can portal the Wren's Nest news on their own pages. TWV itself has good leeway in posting articles because we are a non-profit educational organization, carefully abide by fair use guidelines and so we have established a good relationship with the various media outlets. We are not licensed to portal or otherwise disseminate the news to or for other sites. Thus we cannot 'grant permission' to any other site to use the Nest as a portal or web service for the news. Most media outlets do allow for fair use for non- profits, but not for commercial ventures. As we cannot guarantee that any or all sites that would use the Wrens Nest news are non-commercial (nor do we desire to police the web to do so), it is not within our legal perimeters to 'grant permissions' for anyone to do so. That agreement would lie between the site owner and the media outlets. In other words, TWV is not a middleman distributor nor will we do anything to jeopardize our own good relationship with media outlets or to circumvent the law in these matters. You are however free to link to the Nest and, of course, to develop your own platform for news and information reporting. The more, the merrier! (Some of my own favorite news sources are listed here.)

Based upon the attention that Pagans and Heathens have shown in following, commenting upon and sharing the news, we are growing stronger and more of a force for change every day. Pagans and Heathens have always had a vested interest in First Amendment rights. That we increasingly view the right to a free press as important as the right to freedom of religion demonstrates -- at least to this one Pagan news hound -- that we are expanding our horizons beyond simply our own self-interest in order to embrace and engage a much wider and diverse world.

If information is indeed power, then we as Pagans and Heathens are increasingly holding more of that transforming power in our hands. Let's use it wisely.

Wren's Nest Goes Seven Oh!
The most timely Religious News in the Pagan community!

Wren's Nest posts Pagan community news, updates on discrimination cases, legislative alerts, calls for action and general comments about Pagan issues around the world on a daily basis.

My beautiful wife, ever the vampire, looks for news directly related to the Pagan community, anything related to freedom of religion, and various other news of interest to and for the Pagan community. I will admit that I do 'ride her' at times to keep the news comin, but it doesn't take much. She is a news hound and creating the Nest was what they call a 'no brainer'. All SHE needed was a place to share it. So thanks honey, thanks for keeping us all informed over these past 5 years.

Introducing: Version 7.0

Released Today [July 21st], the new 'Nest is a major upgrade and features live 'hits' (up to the minute action revealing which articles are of the most interest) and the ability for you to add your comments or additional resources. Also new, is a list view to give you an overall picture of the hottest articles and those with the most comments from the past 28 days. Articles with 'Flames' (via a much overused by personal fave image from '96) have been viewed more than 2,000 times. Fans of the 'old nest' can select WN Classic from the side bar at the 'Nest -- Fritz Jung (Husband, Soulmate, Lover and Friend!)

Witch Hunts - Exposing The Lies - A Smash! (12,000 reads)
HOT new series by Kerr Cuhulain

(NEW Article featured this week!)

Do Witches worship Satan? Are Pagans the members of a secret underground cult that sacrifices babies? Are some 'unsolved' murders really covered ups perpetuated by law enforcement personnel as part of an evil conspiracy to overthrow Christianity and to promote a devilish agenda?

The answer would be 'yes' if you believed the claims of people such as Michael Warnke (The Satan Seller), Bill Schnoebelen (Wicca: Satan's Little White Lie) or Lawrence and Michelle Pazder (Michelle Remembers).

And many people DO believe.

THIS WEEK: Eric Pryor - The "Witch Who Switched"

When Pryor, who claims that his craft name was "Lord Gandolf", first became known to the Wiccans in the Bay area of California, he had set up what he called the "New Earth Temple". This was described by the press as nothing more "than his dismal Tenderloin apartment." Pryor originally claimed that he had "75 followers." Pryor later upped this claim, claiming that "'tens of thousands across the country' once practised under his leadership." Pryor announced in Salem on 6 June 1992 that he had been the High Priest of both "the New Earth Temple", "the New Earth Fellowship of Man Kind" and the "Cinema of Transgression." In an auto-biography given to journalist Bob Hansen in 1996, Pryor reported that, "Seeking relief from an abusive upbringing... [Pryor] often escaped to the library, where he discovered the Earth Star Temple in Manhattan, where he spent a short period of time 'exchanging sex for training in Occult Sciences." The story gets bigger with every telling.

In an attempt establish his credentials, Pryor made the following claims, adding that the individuals involved would vouch for him:

Pryor claims that he was trained and initiated by Herman Slater, proprietor of the Magickal Childe store in New York. Pryor says that he first met Slater when he was 12. He further claims to have written many of the rituals in A Book of Pagan Rituals edited by Herman Slater (Weiser, 1978).
  • Pryor claims that he studied with Lady Sabrina of Our Lady of Enchantment, a Wiccan seminary.
  • Pryor claims that he studied with Carol Bulzone of the store Enchantments.
  • Pryor claims that he received ordination from the Gavin and Yvonne Frost's Church of Wicca.
  • Pryor claims that he received initiation as a third degree Gardnerian from priestess Rolla Nordic.
  • Pryor claims that he worked with Witches' League for Public Awareness (WLPA) founder Laurie Cabot in Salem, MA.
  • Pryor claims that he worked with Pagan musicians Kenny and Tzipora Klein.
  • Pryor claims to have been a board member of the Bay Area Pagan Assemblies (BAPA).

Editors Note: This hot new series continues to be a smashing success with over 12,000 reads in just two weeks. Great work Kerr!

Pagans in Recovery and Alcoholics Anonymous
by Lyon

Recently, I attended the Pagan Unity Festival (PUF) in Tennessee. A whole blissful weekend including classes and workshops with about one hundred like-minded souls. Because PUF was being held at a state park, there was no alcohol (or drugs) allowed. This is perfect for me. You see I am an alcoholic in recovery. Goddess has seen fit to help me stay sober for more than nine years.

One of the workshops listed in the program was billed as "Pagans in Recovery".

"Great!" I thought. I was very excited. Finally, I could attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting where I didn't have to watch what I said, where I didn't have to worry about some Fundamentalist or Born-Again Christian hearing me call my Higher Power Goddess instead of God and labeling me Devil-worshipper or trying to convert me from my "wrong-headed" ways... "I Read the News Today... Oh Boy!"
(John Winston Lennon - 1967)

Greetings Pagans, Witches, Heathens and Wiccans!

This past week was another productive one, with the focus on bring the 'Nest to what it needs to be. In a mad scramble on Saturday, I learned some new PHP syntax and FINALLY made the 'Nest more alive by including the option for you to HELP, with your comments and resources. Wren and I are very excited at what is now called Wren's Nest v7.0

To do the Nest update, I had to steal time away from some of my other duties here at TWV. So... It's now 9 pm and time to actually get our weekly update UP... Look for detailing of the many changes that happened this week in the next couple of days (or just surf 'round the site)... Until then allow me to reiterate a couple of 'updated' notes from last week...

When Your Email Goes Bad: The only real rule we have for the WOTW section is that all listings must have a working email address! This is a reminder that IF your listing disappeared there is a 99.9% chance that we received a 'Server not found', 'User unknown', or 'mailbox over quota' bounce. With our new 'Cloaked' email system, anyone can email your listing BUT if it fails, WE get the mail back.

If your listing was removed PLEASE don't attack us assuming it must have been a sinister plot against you personally (or that we must be afraid of the 'competition'). We don't react well to that. I say again, 99.9% of the time it was YOUR email that went bad and we will not list anyone without a real and working email address. So IF your listing has been removed, kindly resubmit it with an email address that DOES work.

Introducing WOTW version 7.2: Lots and lots of changes over at the 'Witches of the World' pages. The most dramatic is a major rewrite of the Main Page for your area... All state/province and country front end pages now feature; Local Notices (up top), Birthdays this Calendar Week, Circles, Events and Workshops (for the next 2 weeks), and all new or updated Covens and Groups & Orgs listed in the past two weeks! This gives you quick access to some of the latest info on your area. Another, long overdue, feature is the proper flagging of new vs. updated listings. With a listing this large many of you have requested this and we now have it set up for our Groups listings... Look for proper flagging of all listings in the weeks to come. Also revamped this past week was the detail page for Covens and Groups. This page is one of the top 5 visited pages here at Witchvox and really needed to be better detailed and fleshed out.

In closing, I'd like to thank Wren for her incredible dedication in hunting down the news and getting up quickly. The 'Nest is a frequent stop for this Witch and clearly popular with many of you. Information is power! Aquire it and use it wisely.

Can YOU Help?...

Pagan Tragedy: Fire takes Home and Cats
Just in a Press Time from Trish

Fritz,

I heard from two very dear friends yesterday that they lost most of their house and two cats to an electrical fire. John Grey Wolf and his wife Deena have been serving the VA community in a variety of ways, John most specifically through on-going sweat logdes at Betsy's Gatherings (www.outofthedark.com). John and Deena lost most of their books, all of John's Native American regalia and spiritual tools, and pretty much everything else in the house was damaged by smoke and water. While they are in good spirits, as the realities of the loss set in, our good wishes and prayers would be welcome.

Additionally if anyone wishes to donate goods and money to cover those things that insurance will not (like lost time from work) Betsy has been kind enough to set up a contact point. Checks (made payable to John Wilde) - mastercard transactions, or goods can be directed to: Blackwater Campground, 7651 Whispering Pines Trail, Windsor, VA 23487, 757-357-7211, Website: http://www.OutoftheDark.com/Blackwater/ EMail: Blackwater@OutoftheDark.com

My thanks to anyone who can help.
