|A Mummer's Play: Portland Reclaiming's Magical Activism Cluster [Website/more info] (Portland, Oregon US) took part in a mummers play to demonstrate the destruction caused by war. Participants walked in a funeral procession led by a solitary drummer, and periodically lowered the coffin to mourn the loss of human life through unending conflict. -- Rowan Phillips|

This week marks the one-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on New York City, the Pentagon and Flight 93. The repercussions of that one day in 2001 are still very much with us. Many people in NYC suffer from posttraumatic syndrome. Survivors and those who lost friends or family members or co-workers try to both move on and to remember at the same time. Perhaps we all are struggling in that in-between place. Life does go on, it's true. But when your life has been touched by a tragedy that forever alters the course of your life, it is natural to feel ambivalent. Torn between honoring the past and looking forward to the future, we grapple with feelings of regret, of anger, of fear and of optimism. We exist neither there nor here but somewhere within both. And because we have not as yet completely recovered -- if ever we will -- I think that it is safe to say that things today are not as they once were. That is not unusual. Each day always differs from each and every other day. What is unusual --shocking even -- was the unexpected and sudden form by which we all were thrust into realms of unpredictability and targeted annihilation.
Since 9/11/01, the world has changed. We are less naive. We are perhaps more suspicious. But I don't believe that people have changed so much as the systems that manage people have changed. That is, the world's political and religious governments have responded to the 'crisis' of terrorism by imposing new laws or issuing new (or revamped old) directives. How these sometimes sensible, sometimes overreaching, steps will alter our collective futures remains to be seen. That these 'cures' might steer us into a global society rife with secrecy, paranoia, distrust and fear of anyone or anything 'not like us' is a very poignant cause for concern... [continued]

Where The Honor Is...
by Wren Walker
"Every day there is something that would make you afraid, and you have to try not to let it stop you."
"That's where the honor is. Honor is not in acting because you are afraid. Nor is there honor in acting when you are not afraid. But acting when you are afraid, that's where the honor is." -- (Lucille Clifton from The Language of Life; Bill Moyers).

Lord Mehkiall Passes Over
(February 8, 1940 - August 28, 2002)
by Lady Garnet Redstone
Lord Mehkiall quietly passed away at his home in North Carolina in the early hours of Aug 19, 2002. During his lifetime, he was a US marine, a police officer, and retired from the US Postal Service. Born and raised in Concord NC, Lord Mehkiall learned the Craft of Wicca from his Grandfather while in his teens. He was a special part of several Covens in the Carolinas and Colorado, the last of which being the Sacred Oak Grove Coven in Charlotte, NC. His Crossing Over Ritual was performed by Lady Garnet Redstone and Lord Grian Redlion with the Sacred Oak Grove Coven. [Full Eulogy]
by Karen Landry
"Does everyone have a soul, Mommy?" It was such an innocent question, yet coming from my daughter, who had been focused on her math and blissfully ignoring the noises from the preparation of dinner, it was very unexpected.
"Of course, Sweetheart. We all have a soul." I replied. I poked my head around into the dining room where she sat with her addition problems. Her brow was furrowed deeply as she thoughtfully pondered my answer. "Why do you ask?"... [continued]

Changes include: The addition of pictures of the Authors (laced into their book detail listings), logic written to check for a cover image and if it doesn't exist, a generic 'waiting for cover from publisher' image is displayed instead of a broken link, and dozens of other polishings and fixes.

It was a week of too much 'learning the hard way', coupled with many successes. Here are some quick thoughts on recent changes...
Witchvox question of the week (AKA Pagan Perspectives): Most of the week/end was spent on converting over 5,000 of your comments and 75 questions (late 2000 to early 2002) and creating (from scratch) the code to drive the new version. Many HOT topics were covered with Pagan Perspectives v1.0 and as times change... Tastes change so do know that we may bring back some of the hotter questions this fall. Pagan Perspectives version 2.0 is 20x faster in load time than the previous version and will be tweaked substantially over the weeks to come. Today, we launch this popular section in a effort to acquire YOUR Wisdom on critical topics that effect us all.
Another long needed tweak was to write the code to reset the daily 'pages viewed' counter automatically at midnight... Until this past weekend my daily routine involved processing the MTD logs, uploading the latest info, and resetting the daily counter with views from midnight. On Friday I spent the time to hack out some code that will do this automatically at midnight. The daily action counter is not only live but it's now 99% accurate 24/7.

Texe Marrs: The Illuminati Did It
by Kerr Cuhulain
Texe Marrs is a former U.S. Air Force officer who founded Living Truth Ministries in Austin, Texas. He used to put out a newsletter every other month called "Flashpoint," but this is now an on-line newsletter that shares the same name as his radio show on WWCR: "Power of Prophecy." Texe is the author of books which support the Satanic Conspiracy myth, including: Mystery Mark of the New Age, Dark Secrets of the New Age, and Ravaged by the New Age. His wife Wanda has written a book called New Age Lies to Women.
Scanning through Marrs' web site quickly reveals the major theme behind his bizarre presentations: Satan has an organization called the Illuminati which is taking over the world. For those of you not familiar with the Illuminati, here is a brief summary: ...[continued]

This week: FIVE New Teen Essays
by Lvepets, Ryan, Rominjn Wind, TigerSong and Blackhawk
Reincarnation: Do you believe in reincarnation? If so, how do you envision this process working--one entity living many lives, or an "oversoul" with many different entities? Does "karma" follow you from lifetime to lifetime? Is reincarnation linear in time, or does the course of the soul's development allow a "past" life in 2563 C.E., and a "future" one in 1229 B.C.E.? - [Click for Essay #1]
Teen Topics for October:
1. Samhain Do you celebrate Samhain or another cross-quarter festival? If you do, tell us how you celebrate it, when, and what myths, stories and rituals are important for you around this time. Also, do you celebrate on the "traditional" day, or on the astrological mid-point between Equinox and Solstice (Sun in 15 degrees Scorpio)?
2. Harry Potter and Your Peers
The amazing success of Harry Potter has spawned an interest in "Witchcraft and Wizardry" among teens. Has this changed the attitude of your schoolmates and other peers towards real Witches and practitioners of magick--like you?

August 2002: Another Cooker!
August 2002 was another record breaking month here at TWV, with 2,581,978 pages being delivered to 398,594 unique visitors (Hits: 7,478,738 Traffic: 113.27 gigabytes). We spent much of the month blocking many domains from hitting this site, although there is nothing of value to those 'marketing bots' they were really slamming on the site. Our thanks go out to Darragh for his Unix skills. Darragh managed to block what would have been literally hundreds of thousands of Page Requests from those pesky marketing bots. It's also worth noting that a simple phone call to webclipping got their bot better focused on which pages to sniff around on - Thanks Noa!. (see August Stats for a more detailed profile)
