Welcome to The Witches' Voice!

(Featured Articles Below)

Is it 'Samhain Season' already? By the Gods... it sure is! October is a time of treats and much magick throughout most of the Pagan community and here at TWV, it IS our fave turn of the wheel. But before we say goodbye to September, there is still much to celebrate. This year's Pagan Pride events received some of the best local/national press coverage that we've ever seen. (see: Wren's Nest News). This week, we feature some more wonderful reviews OF Pagan Pride Events (see below)

TWV is in a constant state of change and 'newness' can be found all over the site. New groups, articles, websites, news, notices, events and much, much more happen near hourly. New visitors kindly note that extensive chapter listings can be found at the bottom of ALL pages here at TWV.

Oct. 1st.: Site Wide Email TEST Begins: This Week we are testing the email addresses of all 47,495 of the networking listings here at TWV. We do this check/purge, faithfully, every 90 days in an effort to keep this resource as useful as possible. Any checks that render a 'user unknown' or 'mailbox over quota' response will be removed. If your listing has been removed, feel free to resubmit it with a working email address via our Forms Pages.

Pagan books: NOW Searchable! also new this week is the creation of extensive search options (via the side bar on all pages) over at our new Pagan Books chapter. Feel free to execute searches by Title, Author, Publisher, Category, Level or Book profile.

Community votes for top 5 Fave Pagan books saw a doubling of the total votes count this past week with nearly 800 votes cast to date. We plan to announce the community's choices for fave Pagan Books just after Samhain (deadline for your vote) as well as many other interesting stats. Voting is simple; surf to the Voting Page and vote your top five choices. For those of you who want to count the votes yourself, do know that we plan on keeping ALL votes up until Samhain. We will bring them down from time to time to normalize the spelling of Book Titles and Author's names, but any outage should just be for about 10 minutes.

VOTE... For Your Fave Pagan Books Today

Also featured this week: Another meticulously detailed expose by Kerr Cuhulain (Part TWO of Researching "Spiritual Counterfeits"). Kerr has recently engaged in some email conversation with last week's subject. Jack Roper. and has updated Part One of this piece to reflect some of those exchanges. Also new this week is an inspiring piece by Wren entitled 'Knot Charming', a wonderful review of Pagan Pride in Western Massachusetts by our good friend Ariadne and a new question of the week. - Check out the details below.

Have a great week everyone and never forget that it is sometimes wiser to be kind that to be right.

This Week's Featured Articles...

Knot Charming
by Wren Walker

"The bee bounces/Through the knots/Of grass." As I was writing that line of poetry, my mind started to wander, as it is quite prone to do while I am writing poetry. That is actually the method by which I write poetry as well as how I write just about anything else. My stream of consciousness starts chugging away and I've trained my fingers over the years to just type along as my thoughts go streaming. I never know ahead of time where I might end up. Hence the subject of this week's column. It isn't about bees (did that one already) or grass (either kind) or even bouncing (although that sounds like fun). It's about knots. Magickal knots. So, thank you, Ms. Bee for bouncing into my brain carrying your little buzz of inspiration... [Full Article]

Pagan Pride - Western Massachusetts 2002
by Ariadne

Western Massachusetts celebrated its third annual Pagan Pride Day on Saturday, September 21st, 2002 at Strathmore Park in Russell. The weather was fine, if a bit overcast, and the mood was festive as 250 Pagans gathered to meet, shop, and have fun.

Gaia's Children ( once more sponsored the event with the help of several volunteers. This is one organized group! Beginning in April, they planned everything from the main ritual to the potluck. Everything ran smoothly, with people showing up as early as 8:00 am to get set up & ready for the 11:00 start of the event. With volunteers working at the entrance and parking lot, the flow of attendees into the site was as smooth as can be. Local media, both print and TV, were there to cover the event. We made the 6:00 news!... [Full Article]

Mabon - Boyd Hill ESA
by Ann Marie

Tonight reminded me of preparing for a date with a very special lover. The ground was barely damp from our seasonal shower of afternoon rains; the scent of night blooming Jasmine lingered softly on the breeze. The Park had a verdant glow, as a maiden dressed in her finest gown. GreenSong Grove had returned to Boyd Hill ESA for Mabon Sabbat. Some of us heard the land whisper, "Welcome home, " and most of us felt the welcome. The alligators in the pond at Osprey's Roost, Wally and Wallette, barked a greeting, and we all kept a respectable distance form their pond as we observed that their summer fishing had made them plump and at least a foot bigger. Our summer sabbats are held at alternative locations due to the children's summer programs at Boyd Hill, so Mabon for the members and friends of GreenSong Grove is truly a time of thanksgiving, and homecoming... Good news! Ellen is HOME
by Katzedecimal

Good news! Ellen Reed was released from hospital last Tuesday and is recovering at home. She has been pronounced to be in remission, though she is still having some issues with the chemotherapy.

Her computer is still misbehaving, so we have not yet seen her return to her Undernet IRC channel, but the word is she is in good spirits. Once again, she is the Isis Ellen, triumphant!

Thank you so much for your prayers and work for Ellen's healing. Here's hoping there won't be a third time.

Researching "Spiritual Counterfeits" - Part TWO
by Kerr Cuhulain

Updated 9.26.2002: We launched this article on 9.23.2002, a few days later Kerr found himself conversing with Jack Roper (in email) and has updated this piece to reflect the results of those conversations.

In the last part of this article I discussed Jack Roper's CARIS and Lou Sloat's TRCIN. Let's look at some more organizations specializing in acting as "misinformation resources," especially for law enforcement agencies.

Many of the resources used by those pushing the Satanic Conspiracy myth are organizations that exist to convince you that all religions other than Christianity are false and/or Satanic. One such organization on Roper's list is the Spiritual Counterfeits Project (SCP), based in Berkeley, California. The Spiritual Counterfeits Project, founded in 1973, is a non-profit, charitable organization which bills itself as doing "research and publishing on new religious movements"... [Full Article]

Rite of Passage: Hawk
by Mino

Every day, all around the world, a boy becomes a man. These rites of passage often happened without fanfare and pageantry for young men in the past few decades here in the USA. This is changing. Pagans are reviving the thoughts and practices of the Ancestors.

The rising number of pagan groups in the last decade are starting to show signs of spiritual maturity. Cohesive groups are able to produce the circles of initiation and passages are magickally marked in the fabric of time and space. The experience is often a two-way street. Many of the individuals performing the roles of character in these rites never had the chance as a youth to undergo such a personal experience. While the young man gets the benefit and lift of rites in honor of manhood, warriorhood or other coming-of-age ceremony, the men get to experience it as well- within the rituals... [Full Article]

Pagan Pride - Salt Lake City, Utah

The moon is full tonight and the balance pivots tomorrow with the autumn equinox. Many a witch, a few heathens, and one curiously white iris eyed elf did I meet this day. The moon is full tonight and the balance pivots tomorrow with the autumn equinox. Many a witch, a few heathens, and one curiously white iris eyed elf did I meet this day. Ah, Let not any of the sweet silent fairies of this afternoons events be forgot. Today was held the 1st annual Salt Lake City Pagan Pride Day, and Mabonfest!

The festival was held at Affleck park, a wonderously secluded forested mountain camping grove next to a clear stream and overlooked by an almost mother-earth figured precipice between two canyons. About 15 minute drive from downtown SLC half way towards Park City , Ut. The location made for a perfect setting for the merry fairies, and leaf/feather masked pagans in their renfaire...
