Weekly Update: 2/16/2004

We love you Toni & Mino! This week are honored to anchor the Witchvox update with a handfasting photo of Toni and Mino from Naples, Florida. This photo was captured by Witchvox staff photographer Don Waterhawk this past weekend.

Wren and Fritz deeply regret that they couldn't attend, but are honored to share this with the community on our busiest page.

Books, Music, Lovers and Magic!

Greetings Witches, Wiccans, Pagans and Heathens,

This week, we are honored to feature some of the best essays that we've seen in a while, a hot/new Bardic Circle performance from Emerald Rose (who will again perform for the LOTR cast Oscar party in LA - see details), a celebration of two wonderful new Pagan book releases by Oberon Zell-Ravenheart and Trish Telesco, an inspiring essay by Pagan book author Grey Cat, thought-provoking pieces by Meriadoc OakWillow and Arion the Blue, countless new community events, personals, groups, websites, poems and much, much more. -- Links to all of these features can be found below and throughout this page.

Ebooks, Treebooks & Etunes:
One of the many Pagan myths out there is that Pagan Authors are 'well off' - Nothing could be further from the truth. To be a 'full-time' Pagan author is, and always has been, a real struggle. Isaac Bonewits is getting very creative in his efforts to make a living (read Desperate times, desperate measures for details - help if you can.) This past week, Isaac introduced a slew of mp3 files at the insanely low price of 'a buck a tune'. He is also offering an Ebook version of his latest book; Rites of Worship: A Neopagan Approach and Witchcraft: A Concise Guide in Adobe Acrobat Reader format (PDF). We encourage you to patronize the goods and services of Isaac Bonewits, and other Pagan authors as well as the thousands of other goods and services offered by our own.

Thank YOU for your healing Magic!
Wren's only child, Skye, is home in New Hampshire and healing at a rapid pace after a wonderfully successful operation (major brain surgery) in Boston last week. Our deepest thanks go out to all of you who helped with this amazing community healing.

New Feature:
Last week we tweaked up the rotating 'faces' on the upper left corner of this page. They now include links to the individuals and 'randomly' rotate all current Witchvox sponsors that have posted pictures with profiles (183 at this time).

Website Changes:
This past week saw some 'deep code polishing' and the restructuring of several 'tables' in our key database. These changes affected page stat headers/counters on all 7,000 pages here at TWV thus rendering them smarter and faster loading. Added to the 'main networking pages' were both ranking stats and total number of area visits.

Interesting Stats!
Since we launched Witchvox in Jan/97 - we've counted and analyzed everything we can... Occasionally, stats pop up that are surprising or interesting! Here are a few...
  • Although California continues to the most visited networking page here at TWV, recent surprises include Florida (now #2) , and England (now #3). The top 10 breaks down is as follows...

    1. California [1,060,688 visits]
    2. Florida [776,705 visits]
    3. England [773,427 visits]
    4. Texas [745,165 visits]
    5. New York [708,927 visits]
    6. Pennsylvania [589,634 visits]
    7. Ohio [570,272 visits]
    8. Massachusetts [514,289 visits]
    9. North Carolina [501,016 visits]
    10. Michigan [496,960 visits]

  • Young Pagans (13-18) continue to account for ONLY 18.3% of the listings. I'll bet you thought THAT was higher! Actually it has never been higher than the mid 20's. (It has been our observation that new seekers span the age spectrum and always have.) - Surprisingly, on the England pages, the teen percent of total is 28.8%.

  • Witchvox is 'fed' from a single mysql database via requests from 100% hand-written code. - Calls to get, add and edit FROM this database are astounding. - When you hit a complex page such as this one, there are nearly 20 requests made to this database to pull in the info that you see in your web browser... On Jan 1st. we moved to a new server and since that day there have been 85,546,396 requests FOR information, 16,536,003 updates TO that database and 16,340 NEW RECORDS added. If you consider 'set' and other mysql Calls, the total hits against this single database equal 113,330,398! (averaging 104,982 DB hitsÊper hour,Ê1,749Êper minute, and 29 hits per second). It's no wonder Google.com chooses mysql as their backend (running on some 10,000+ servers) - it's wicked fast!

  • Wren's Nest - 10 OH?.
This week we also recalculated 'chapter' hits (all now live) and amazingly Wren's Nest is quickly heading towards the 10's, having generated nearly 10 million Page views (9,577,621) over the years from the posting of almost 10,000 News Clips (9,155) and the 63,757 news comments submitted by YOU.

In closing, allow us to thank you all for your magic and your support. You have built a amazing resource and it is you who remind the world, on a daily basis, that we are not a 'fringe spiritual path'. - You do it all, and in many cases, do it like no other 'path' on the planet. -- Good Show

In Your Service,

New Pagan Book Releases...

Speaking of Pagan authors... Details on new book releases continue to pour in to the Witchvox Pagan Books section. This month's hottest releases include...

Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard by Oberon Zell-Ravenheart (with forward by Ray Buckland)
"This is the first true Grimoire of the 3rd Millennium, and, like its Medieval predecessors, it is itself an act of magick... Through it, I (and the Grey Council) intend to release an entire new generation of Wizards into the worldÜnot just a few, as in times past, but millions. And their impact on the world will be incalculable..." - [More info]

Teen Book of Shadows by Trish Telesco
"A book that begins by sharing about how teens can talk to their parents about Wicca, then goes on to provide sound fundamentals on everything from creating your own Book of Shadows to using your sun sign to help you choose careers and social activities." - [More info]

On Magic: An Instructional Essay
by Meriadoc OakWillow

As I sit down to write on this particular evening - a night defined by extremely mundane practicalities as uncomfortable; disheartening; dejecting, even - I cannot help but wonder why so few are able to experience the simplistic beauty of nocturnal Winter. The water faucets are cracked open the very slightest bit to prevent the pipes from freezing, yet the barely-audible gurgling and dripping sounds for all the world like a woodland brook, singing out in the melodic whisper that accompanies the ephemeral debate between a small bit of water and a pebble or two... Bardic Circle
(version 8.0)

'Bardic Circle 2004' at Witchvox:

This week we feature 2 new performances...

Sonorous Sanctum - by Beltana

Adieu to the century for a time... Farewell to Summer... Welcome in the Cold and the Harsh and the sacred form of the Sleeping Seed within us... inspired by a withdrawing from life in the winter months... and the promise of the new SPRING... And to when... at once... the bard and his music shall ret... (Go To Performance)

Urania Sings - by Emerald Rose

Urania, one of the Greek muses, was said to inspire astronomers and those who explore the night sky. Urania is also associated with Aphrodite ("Aprodite Urania" the goddess of divine love) .

Logan, the author, has been an amateur astronomer for many years, and has a degree in archeo... (Go To Performance)

Of Wizards, Warriors, and a Good Mug of Ale
by Arion the Blue

Why is every Pagan and fellow traveler I know lining up to see The Return of the King, the third and final movie of the trilogy? Why is the question on their minds not, "Should I see this again or wait for the DVD," but "When shall I be able to squeeze another show into my near future before it closes?"

I guess for many of us it is because we have been awaiting this moment for most of our lives. For me, it started when I saw The Hobbit on my elementary school library shelves and asked myself, "What is a Hobbit?" From there I went to The Lord of the Rings, and I proceeded to read the entire trilogy, from start to finish. And then I read it again. [Full Article]

Pagan Community Safety
by Grey Cat

It's with a good deal of relief I note that the Pagan community has actually reached a point where most members are willing to admit that not everyone who says they are Pagan is necessarily someone you want to associate with. In fact, like any other community, religious or not, we have our bad apples and have always had a good deal of difficulty figuring out how to deal with them. Perhaps now that we have admitted we sometimes do have a problem, we can think quietly about how we can reduce its impact... [Full Article]
