Excavation In Syria Sheds New Light On Ancient Mithrae Cult

[7,285 reads]

Myths surrounding ancient religions and cults have long preoccupied humanity's understanding of history. Yet they remain a mystery to us, especially in the absence of written texts.

One such cult, that of Mithrae, said to have existed during the age of the Roman Empire, was widely spread among Rome's army. Vestiges going back to this faith have been discovered in areas under Roman control, in Europe, Britai...

Yet you'd be hard pressed to get the various fundamentalist Christian "occult experts" to agree on what demons are. Lyle Rapacki attempts to define them as: "Spirits: One-third of the angelic host cast out of Heaven with Lucifer after he led a revolt, with them, against God's throne.[1] Obviously Rapacki hasn't read any of the grimoires he lists in his manual, because if he had, he would have realized that these usually label angels as spirits too.

The term "demon" first appeared in the English language circa 1200 CE in Layamon's Chronicle of Britain.[2] It comes from the Greek word "daimon", meaning "a lesser deity", "a spirit", or "one's genius", and originally could refer to a spirit who was good or bad. It was used by authors such as Homer in almost the same fashion as the word "theos" ("god"). The difference was that "theos" referred to the personality of the deity and "daimon" the deity's activity. After a long and hot walk from the cars, carrying gear, we began relaxing into reclining chairs for sensuous foot washing with scented cool water and luxurious homemade creams, and jumping into the cool, inviting waters of the river, sparkling with promises and enchantment. There is some overlap in the two fields, certainly, but a psychotherapist studies and exercises a lot of skills that I do not. And vice versa.
Take an example where the two kinds of work overlap: Now and then someone who is afflicted with real mental illness asks for my help. What can I do for them? I cannot ask diagnostic questions to see where they fit in the current understanding of their disease. I cannot discuss recent research in their disease, or even old research. I cannot tell them whether some medication they've been prescribed is a good idea. I wouldn't dare to venture such an opinion.
Even speaking of therapy, though, there are some things I'm pretty well versed in - meditation techniques or mythological visualizations or prayer, for example - that I can suggest as therapeutic exercises, pointing out... [Full Article]

Let's Chat About Festivals...
by Salem

Pagan Festivals. That small phrase can mean so many things. I think the best way that one can address this is by breaking the topic up into several key areas. What are these festivals and what differentiates one from another? What types of problems are inherent in the conception and implementation of them? What should you know as a newbie or an experienced hand at these events? And most importantly, what can we all do to make them better?
For the purposes of this article I am going to draw on the festivals I have been to over the years in Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas. These range in settings from hotel events, cabins in state parks and all out camping on private land. While I will be as fair as possible I must concede that I am by nature one that enjoys the cold yet I have for some strange reason chosen to live in the Southern portion of the... [Full Article]

The Closet Within the Broom Closet
by Rhiannon Eleri

The Pagan community is well known for its political activism, interest in current events and liberal leanings. But within such an open and overwhelmingly loving community resides a lesser known step-child: the Pagan Conservative. Though it would seem to be an oxymoron to those who often go without clothing, dance in the moonlight, revere sexuality and the Earth, there are many out there. However, they often choose to remain hidden in the closet within the Broom Closet. Why would a Pagan, in such a loving, giving community choose to do so? There are many reasons, though one stands out blatantly: peace. A Conservative-leaning Pagan would not make himself known to avoid the political evangelism that is often in the background of many Pagan, Druid, and Wiccan events.
Though our religions vary, they all tend toward the idea that spirituality is not something to force upon another. There are codes of behavior, such as the Rede, or Laws... [Full Article]

 Lore, Rituals, Activities, and Symbols

Celebrating the Seasons of Life: Samhain to Ostara

Author: Ashleen O'Gaea

Category: New Age/Wicca Level: All

Unique among books about the Wiccan Sabbats, Celebrating the Seasons of Life: Samhain to Ostara takes a different approach to explaining the holidays by taking an in-depth look at half of the Wheel of the Year.
