It was at a monastery in the Himalayas where I was studying Buddhism for the summer. He told me that we were living in Kaliyuga, the Age of Destruction named after Kali, the Black Goddess of Hinduism.

"She wears a garland of skulls around her neck, holds a machete in one hand, a severed head in another, and dances upon the corpse of her spouse, Shiva. This fearsome feminine energy signifies chaos, death and the dissolution of the universe," the monk said. "In Kaliyuga, the destructive passions run wild, causing much pain and suffering. And so it is also a great time for Buddhist practice, because the path of liberation from suffering becomes most appealing."

In my studies at the monastery I learned that cessation of suffering was at the heart of Buddhist practice, and that desire was the cause of all suffering and so was to be rooted out. And for a would-be monk, the most potent and dangerous form of desire is lust for a woman

"There's no prayer or charm that can protect a monk from the beast with soft horns on its chest," goes the Buddhist aphorism.

Indeed, I discovered many Buddhist practices are designed to protect monks from the evils of female flesh. In many sects, a woman is not permitted to touch a monk, not permitted to be alone with a monk. In Thailand a woman must kneel down whenever a monk walks by so that her shape won't excite him. In some schools of Buddhism, women are not even permitted to become nuns... [Full Article]

Sirius Rising 2004
Brushwood Folklore Center
Sherman, New York
Review by Don and Daniella WaterHawk

Well... as we drove out of our driveway, we took one last look at our banana trees and tropical garden, and before we made the turn onto the main road, we already began to get homesick pangs. Looking at each other in the van, and remarking that its okay, for we were going to meet family and friends that we only get to see once a year. We set our traveling shields and trusted that Grandfather would help us see that the trip was safe and quick. Well, we were half right, the trip was safe, but not quick. Because of the storms it took us three days of driving before arriving at the Brushwood Folklore Center in Sherman, New York. Owned and operated by Frank and Darlene Barney. Although I had been calling myself a Witch since I was about 13, I was somewhat ignorant of the wider Pagan world. I knew I liked to be nude and was fairly uninhibited; I romped around the woods, and I called out to the Gods on a regular basis. However, I practiced on my own or with a small group of friends who were mostly there for the show.

I was excited, nervous, and...free. My friend had convinced me that this festival would be good for me. So I found myself in the grocery store checking off the items on the list as we went down the aisles. The customer pauses and thinks, "Should I put back the statues or pass on the 1st Degree training that I've been wanting?" Can you picture people selling Wicca, selling initiations, selling degrees and the "rare and elusive" Traditional Book of Shadows handed down from generations through an exclusive line? I have in the past been privy to the Dallas-Fort Worth Pagan Pride Day festival, the Samhain and Beltane gatherings hosted by the Council of Magickal Arts south of Austin, as well as private functions. The various aspects of the celebrations have ranged in size from just a few close friends to a full-on community gathering. Being a lifelong resident of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I feel I can state with some authority that things have come a long way in the past ten years. If Pagan Pride Day had been attempted back then, there would have been a serious need for police protection, as there certainly would have been protesters at the gates. Here in Texas, people walk around armed as a matter of habit. As it was, the most recent celebration I heard of went off without... [Full Article]

<basefont size=2 color =#000000>

Bardic Circle
(version 8.0)

'Bardic Circle 2004' at Witchvox:

This week we feature...

Mysteries - by Spiral Rhythm [Impressions: 618]

We are grateful for permission to post
Spiral Rhythm Live At PSG 2004.

June 23, 2004, Spiral Rhythm performed at PSG.
