Mexicans Cheer Day Of The Dead With Food, Flowers
 [6,030 reads]
From indigenous Indian villages to violence-torn cities on the U.S. border, millions of Mexicans trekked to cemeteries on Monday to honor their dead with flowers, food and musical tributes. The two-day celebration has its roots in Roman Catholic tradition and ancient pagan rites where families honor dead relatives by cleaning their graves, offering them favorite food, laying out flowers and even serenading them with the music they used to love. Drawing on a belief... [Read More] - [Add Your Thoughts]

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has". - Margaret Mead
This week, we celebrate one of the 'ab fave' holidays in all of Pagandom - 'Samhain' (aka Hallowe'en, ShadowFest, Martinmas, Old Hallowmas)... Samhain is about many things and not the least of which is Treats! Everyone loves Treats and this week we offer many. Check out the latest articles, spirit news, announcements, events, groups forming, links, poetry, proclamations and much, much more.
"The Scene was Rocking .... All were digging the sound" RE: the 'Surf Beat' audio clip that WAS embeded in this page (too busy today for streaming mp3)... Who WAS that Drummer? Our guess is studio legend Hal Blaine. We sent that query over to "Pop/Samhain Historian" Mike Nichols... and 'the man' himself... Thank YOU 'Boris' for co-authoring what is IMHO the greatest Lyric ever written. (visit the Monster Mash Website for Sinatra, Presley and Vincent Price Quotes and so much more.)
10/31/2004 Update: Treat!!! This morning we received an email from Bobby 'Boris' Pickett in response to our query about the drummer that played on Monster Mash...
"Dear Fritz, Thank you for your kind and supportive email. The drummer on the record was an old African-American jazzman named Jesse Sails. The upright bassist was his pal Chuck Trainor. As a matter of interesting trivia, the great Leon Russell was supposed to play piano on the "A" side of the record, but because he was late for the session, ended up playing on the "B" side only; "Monsters' Mash Party -- Have a safe and Happy Halloween!". " -- Bobby Pickett

Ritual and Routine: Service to the Dead on Samhain by SnakeMoon
Recently here in The Witches' Voice, Wren commented on an article she read in the Wilkes Barre Times-Leader about church folk gathering to care for an abandoned graveyard. She went on to say that...
"Ya know, this is an idea that some Pagan group, coven, family or individual(s) could run with in the local area. While many old graveyards are still the property and/or responsibility of churches, there are many that have been abandoned by the founding families or other groups."
This reminded me of a Samhain practice I initiated a few years back after the tragedy of September 11th. My community offers public rituals on certain Sabbats, including Yule, Beltane, and Samhain. They have been doing this for many years, and have a standard structure for each of those rituals. When I first joined the group, I attended a few Sabbat planning meetings, excited at the possibility of doing larger rituals that were a bit more theatrical than I was able to manage on my own - though Goddess knows, I tried! (I'm guessing that the Virgin Dakini Mamas, my previous coven, still remember their Inanna-like descent, veil by veil, through the underworld of my tiny triplex.)... [Full Article]
The 9th International Halloween Festival Queen Mary College - London, England. by Bluebell
Although I greatly enjoy The Halloween Festival and would not miss it for the world, it's nice to know that all profit goes towards buying Ravens Wood. I've been lucky enough to go there, to stand under the tall beech trees or wander through the high ferns and Oaks - it is truly magical. I don't know if it's the rituals that are done there or the place itself but it welcomes you with open arms. And if you are really lucky the fairy folk pop out to see you, I jest not... Pop Goes the Witch: The Wiccan/Pagan Times Talks to Fiona Horne
Pagans and Politics by Alia PhoenixTears
This topic comes at a particularly pertinent time for those of us living in Australia as we sit back and contemplate the results of our latest Federal election. Did the right man win? Well, if we believe the doctrines of modern democracy, then I suppose the answer to this particular question, at its most basic level, must be yes. Amidst the controversy of a public forced to pick the "best of a bad bunch," lines must somewhere be drawn between our personal opinions and what is the best thing for our country as a whole. As Pagans, however, we recognize our social responsibility in a somewhat more active sense then those traveling somewhat less "open" paths... [Full Article]
