The morning of Saturday, February 5, 2011 dawned overcast and gloomy, followed by intermittent showers throughout the day. But nothing, the weather included, would have been able t to dampen the glittering dazzle that filled the fairytale handfasting ceremony of Kyrja Cole to Randy Withers.
Surrounded by nearly one hundred friends, family members, and elemental-colored Mickey Mouse balloons, the couple, both practicing witches of the Elemental Witchcraft Tradition, exchanged vows within sacred space officiated by HPS Michelle Brzezicki.
The bride wore a satin lavender fairytale princess gown she designed and created herself, with sparkling purple slippers, topped by a glittering, star-studded, matching crown. The groom’s swashbuckling attire included deep purple satin pirates’ pants and matching cloak, with a bright white satin shirt; all items hand-made by friends eager to add to the excitement of the day.
The couple had purchased and worn their wedding rings months in advance, in order to infuse the tokens with their personal energies. The rings were removed during the ceremony in order to be melted down and made into a gold pentacle, by local metal smith Grey Bear, as a symbol of their shared faith, for their personal altar in their home. In anticipation of a lifetime of commitment, the couple had permanent tattoos engraved on their ring fingers of colorful Elemental pentacles.
Circle was cast, Quarters were called, Freyja and Freyr were invoked. Cakes and ale were shared by all, both within and outside of the Circle. The handfasting cord was tied, vows were exchanged, rings were removed and the couple jumped over the broom and sword – in this case, a Klingon Bat’leth in a humorous nod to the couple’s eccentric nature.
As serious stewards of Mother Earth and huge Disney fans, the couple invited guests to consider making donations to Disney’s Worldwide Conservation Fund in lieu of gifts. The Walt Disney organization provided colorful lapel pins for the couple to give to those who donated as “Thank you” gifts; $300 in donations was collected. As the author of the newly-released read-aloud book for Pagan children, “Rupert’s Tales: The Wheel of the Year – Beltane, Litha, Lammas and Mabon, ” the bride gave away an autographed copy of the book to the lucky donors whose name was drawn from the Collection Cauldron.
Guests also enjoyed participating in various activities immediately following the ceremony, to include “The Pagan Pokey, ” led by HPS Michelle Brzezicki, a fast-paced Spiral Dance throughout the building by Amanda Osborne, and musical chairs – with the winner receiving two “Rupert’s Tales” posters as their prize. During feasting, guests were treated to original poetry by Sarah Roberge, a beautiful blessing presented by Balinnor, and songs written and performed by Lady Gwyn Fae – all written especially for the wedding .
Lack of surprise was expressed by all who attended that the happy couple had plans to spend their magickal honeymoon at Walt Disney World.
