Nkosi Johnson
Type of Passage: Death
Date of Passage: June 1st. 2001

Early morning, Friday June 1st, 2001 a young South African boy has died. This was not an ordinary boy, but a boy that was born into our world with HIV. At present the major pharmaceutical companies that provide the medicine that is prescribed world wide for the treatment of HIV and AIDS has made it very difficult for people like this child and many others that suffer the same affliction. The cost is to high.

So on this day, other children most assuredly have died, for that matter many people in general have died today, June 1st, 2001. Why is this child different? Nkosi Johnson lived his entire life afflicted with this virus. When he became of age he wanted to attend public school. Protests from the parents, students and teachers prompted the attention of the world regarding the issue of AIDS and the fear that is stirred up around uneducated people whose actions are motivated by it. Nkosi became an activists at a young age due to his surroundings and courage to stand up for what he thought to be right.

But think about this, the sacrifice, the gift that he has given to people. He spent his days trying to educate people and he partitioned the nation's parliament to create new legislation against discrimination against people with HIV. He utilized his days to create positive change in his environment. His mother had passed away from the virus at the age of two and a woman named Gail Johnson took him as a foster parent. She gave him all she could to make his life comfortable. Nkosi knew his time on this Earth was limited. He chose to spend his days being the best he could be.

In December 2000, Nkosi health turned for the worst. He took the time to visit with people that came to see him. Even when he was the weakest. He inspired those around him. A true being of Love and Light. February Nkosi celebrated his 12th birthday. While a huge celebration was given in his home town, he could not be there. I am sure he felt the love that the people have for him. It was a day that many thought would never come.

There are approximately 4 million South African's infected with HIV. That is 10% of the population the country. There are many reasons for this, why.., there are many reasons and excuses around the world where similar situations occur. I am not here to talk of these, I am here to make note that a young boy died today. A boy that came into this world with a ton of excuses and reasons to sit back and feel sorry for himself. Choosing another Path he has made a difference. Choosing a Path of working to make the world a better place even if he is not here to enjoy it. Walking a Path of the Give Away!

This is my way to honor and respect the Path you chose Nkosi. For making the sacrifices that you had to make, in order to create a huge change around you. My heart felt Thanks to you. I shall burn a candle for you to show that the light you created has not burned out!

So again, a child has died today, in fact many have died today. But today a gift to the world has died.
