Every day, all around the world, a boy becomes a man. These rites of passage often happened without fanfare and pageantry for young men in the past few decades here in the USA. This is changing. Pagans are reviving the thoughts and practices of the Ancestors.
The rising number of pagan groups in the last decade are starting to show signs of spiritual maturity. Cohesive groups are able to produce the circles of initiation and passages are magickally marked in the fabric of time and space. The experience is often a two-way street. Many of the individuals performing the roles of character in these rites never had the chance as a youth to undergo such a personal experience. While the young man gets the benefit and lift of rites in honor of manhood, warriorhood or other coming-of-age ceremony, the men get to experience it as well- within the rituals.
The group pictured is from SW Florida. This photo was taken at midnight, just before they took a Mother's childe away from her. Yip! Right out of a sound, comfortable sleep (during a bright Full Moon), this young lad -- JOHN, was rousted from his warm, comfy bed by a very demanding group of masked marauders. He was instructed that his worst nightmare had come, and allowed to choose whether or not to become a man that night! He chose the path of becoming, and was instructed to say a last farewell to his Mother, who cried for her little boy. They were last seen stuffing the boy into a van and heading "out into the Everglades" (according to the discussion the men were having in the boy's presence- that is!) They ended up at SUMMERLAND on the night before the big Mabon Celebration, where the boy would be presented to the community with a new name: HAWK and a new identity: MAN. Sorry but the details of the evening before are highly classified in the Men's Mystery category. Women are not the only mysterious creatures on the planet!
