On Monday, 22 Feb 99 at 4 PM, Annette Hinshaw died in the St Francis Hospital in Tulsa of cancer. She had been fighting it 4 years. Her indomitable courage stood even a half hour before she slipped into the final coma.
Her wish was to be buried facing east, in the simplest coffin possible, directly on the dirt. She wished to return to the Earth as soon as may be.
Annette was a Board Member of the Pagan Educational Network and a member of the Earth Spirituality Based Around Tulsa (ESBAT) and the Witch and Pagan Press Alliance.
She maintained a local/regional e-mail list of almost 100 people, mostly in Oklahoma, for posting notices and items of general interest. Annette also published an annual calendar of local events and was an active religious rights defender.
Annette wrote many articles for pagan magazines and produced "handbooks" and brochures with wonderful information for pagans on many subjects.
But that doesn't even begin to tell you who Annette Hinshaw was or how much she will be missed. Stephanie Urquhart has written the following tribute:
How do you go on when someone so dependable and steadfast is gone?
I imagine that if the New Agers are right and some enlightened souls stay here to teach, Annette Hinshaw must be one of those souls. I meet many people who claim to have great knowledge, and yet this woman was much more interesting than any High Priestess or Guru. I found myself always wanting to sit at her feet. Annette always smelled of books and paper, my two most favorite smells in the world.
I imagine that if the Celtic Pagans are right, and she has gone to the Summer Land. She's probably telling the Morrigu bedtime stories. I have met many people who claim to be positive, happy people, and yet this woman was one of a few who could soothe me and calm me at my worst. Although I never did it, I always wanted to lay my head in her lap.
But knowing Annette, I can almost hear her say, "They're all right, " and she will travel along many trails, seeing all there is to see. She will be the heavenly tourist representing all that is good of humankind despite our own good intentions and tons of concrete mix.
I can almost see her in my minds eye, walking along the chalk cliffs in England explaining to Herne why Americans are so psychotic about sex, in terms of social conditioning of course. No doubt she would enumerate to Aradia just what Jesse Helms' redeeming qualities are. If anyone could find such qualities, it would be Annette. And when you look up into the sky and see a terrible storm coming that seems to just putter out; no doubt Annette's up there telling Thor some horrible joke that involves Ice Giants, a great Dane and a banana, and she would just to save your car from getting hail damage.
While Annette was here, she did her best to help Pagans define community and then live up to that definition. She represented us with dignity and maturity which helped many people to see Pagans as regular human beings. She kept the community connected through a Calendar of events and e-mail list. She held workshops and even wrote a couple of books, her second book is to be out this spring. She worked for several organizations over the years, PEN (Pagan Education Network), WADL, and even did me a favor or two for the Military Pagan Network. No doubt her presence will be sorely missed at the Spirit of Spring gatherings in Oklahoma.
Annette was a quiet force to be reckoned with. Her knowledge and logic would outweigh any blustery noise made by opposing forces, and her patience would wear stone away like it was sand.
Maybe one day we will meet again.
My deepest condolences to her husband Lou and her son Mike.

We at TWV join with Stephanie in wishing Annette "Good Journey" and offer our heartfelt condolences to her family, her associates and friends and to all who shall miss her unwavering and guiding light.
