A Hole In My Universe
The first person for whom I served as initiatory priestess died last night, died as silently as she had lived. Phoenix (a/k/a Circe, Barb) studied Wicca for at least 10 years before she trained with me over 15 years ago. No priestess ever began her work with an initiate in whom she could feel more confidence and satisfaction.
In both her personal and her spiritual life, Phoenix always did her job. She made the best of an early and bad marriage and, when he walked out on her after almost 30 years, she valiantly tried to make the best of life alone. (Though I have always suspected she regretted having slept with only one man in her whole life, and him a SOB.) She coped with arthritis, money shortages, and ill health quietly and with courage. She learned to stand up for herself and not only say that she'd go this far and no farther but to enforce it, too. We must not forget she had a gamin sense of humor and was almost always ready to laugh.
Phoenix was initiated into NorthWinds third degree and served as High Priestess with her customary dignity and grace. She didn't teach or organize public events; instead, she concentrated on giving support and encouragement to those who did. You knew if she were in the ritual circle the ceremony would be successful.
She went gently into her future, into the arms of her mother with death as her lover. Although her death at this moment was the result of (what I consider to be) criminal actions, she did not die before her time. She leaves for us her exquisite needlework and our memories of her kindness and care for us all. Fare ye well, dear Phoenix, Witch and Priestess.
