The Witches' Voice's Position by Fritz and Wren
Where there is Smoke... There is probably a Fire!
 A WitchVox Editorial - January 4th, 1998 c.e.
Just as the element of fire is often used to purify and force change, Witch Wars sometimes ARE necessary for the evolvement of Modern Witchcraft. But unless we learn from them, they will continue to divide us and will ultimately destroy us from within. It's time for some accountability and honest communication. So must this be!
We find ourselves constantly being asked to "get involved" in both local and international "Witch Wars". We are presently aware of at least a 2 dozen substantial Witch Wars that are happening around the world. We are sure there are many more. Because of our Web presence, many people try to get "our support" for "their side". We are constantly reminding people of our chosen neutrality. This is our individual choice as well as our professional stance.
The Witches' Voice is a sponsor driven organization. We have an obligation to uphold the TWV mission statement and so honor the trust that our sponsors and supporters have placed in us to act as representatives and to guide the organization wisely. The TWV mission statement clearly states:
"The Witches' Voice is a neutral forum open to all adherents of the various Heathen religions, Pagan, Witch, Wiccan traditions and to Solitary Practitioners who/that follow a positive code of ethics such as The Wiccan Rede or The Ring of Troth's, Nine Virtues." It is our belief that neutral parties are necessary in the Pagan community. Because of its neutral stance, TWV is able to act as a mediating and advisory agent. We have offered confidential counseling to many individuals and groups who desired to hear an objective viewpoint. (We also have our own advisors that we can turn to for a "second opinion." Many Thanks for listening... You know who you are!) In the heat or confusion of emotionally charged issues, neutral parties can be an invaluable resource. We need more of them!
In the last 10 months, TWV has featured the Voices of thousands of Witches via essays, articles, and on our former live feedback forum. We have future plans to present the thoughts and opinions of many, many more. We are open to hearing the diverse voices that make up our community. Hopefully, some real lasting level of mutual understanding may result.
To What Extent Can The Voice Get Involved? Even neutral parties have their personal opinions and thoughts on a given Witch War. In many cases, they really ARE involved. Chances are good that if folks have been around the Witch community for any length of time that they know some, if not most, of the other people involved. The big question is "When do you step in?"
In our case, this is further complicated by the fact that we have a very active website--an awfully tempting and powerful vehicle to call upon. We made the decision from day one to NOT use the Witches' Voice for our personal viewpoints and pet peeves. Goddess knows its been awfully tempting at times! A year ago this week, we left another organization due to matters of integrity. Integrity is important to us-both personally and as the agents of TWV. Anyone who knows us, knows that we are very open-minded and tolerant. They also can tell you that we will never compromise on issues of integrity.
What you think about your own integrity is your business. How your actions effect the community is everybody's business. Check out the latest installment of our Witchcraft 101 series Even the newest seekers are getting the message.
We created the Witches' Voice to be a news and information network for the entire Pagan community. We gather the news, articles and essays and present them so that you will know what is going on in the community and the world. What you do with this information is up to you. We will offer both the newest seeker and knowledgeable Crone a platform upon which to state their views on accountability and integrity.
The Witches' Voice will never be "about" problems. We are not running from the "psychic boogie-man" or embracing the victim mindset. We don't deny the "dark side" but we don't choose to celebrate it either (of course it IS a necessary part of the balance). TWV will always be DRIVEN by the search for and implimentation of solutions. Make no doubt about it, we are inspired by the Witches of the light that we have experienced in this community. To us a Witch is a giver and a healer. This is exactaly what we hear from the silent majority of the Craft via ten's of thousands of submission forms, surveys and email. Do know that the "takers" and "self proclaimed leaders" will not go quietly into the night. However, also know that YOU don't have to support them on any day in any way. Witch Wars: A Community Working on a Vaccine!
Witch Wars will not go away UNLESS we deal with them! We ARE a community in change! We don't ask for much here at the Witches' Voice, but... We ARE asking for any PLANS that YOU may have. It really is about choices and YOU get to make them. Never forget... We ARE making this up as we go along, all of us, everyday. Perhaps, working together, we can begin to celebrate our own diversity instead of constantly fighting over it.
In Her Service and Yours,
Wren Waker & Fritz Jung Co-Founders - The Witches' Voice January, 4th, 1998
NOTE of THANKS: We are honored to thank Janet Farrar, Gavin Bone and Bev Richardson of Ireland for helping us to flesh out many of the thoughts that we present here. They have indeed opened our eyes on some of these points and have remained sources of invaluable inspiration. We'd also like to thank Willo for some last minute thoughts and Jorah of Madstone Press for doing a final 5 hour proof of this special feature. We love you and we thank you all - Blessed be - Fritz and Wren.
