They say, "We don't have problems, we only have opportunities" -And Great Goddess!- Do WE have opportunities! Modern Witchcraft, Wicca and Paganism are probably the fastest growing spiritual paths on planet Earth. This is an exciting time for sure. The Internet offers the modern Witch an opportunity to become something quite special. Research indicates that the smaller religions were the first to take to the Internet and utilize it like none of the big boys can or have. Make no doubt about it, we are already a community on-line. Where we go with this "opportunity" is clearly up to us. First, we must "walk this rocky road".
1997 rendered the most positive press that the modern Witch, Wiccan and Pagan community has ever seen. This statement is backed up by hundreds of examples and news articles from all over the world. A substantial portion of our society now knows what we are not. It's high time to show them what we are. Let's face it, the justification for the modern Witch to be viewed as "the victim" is running out of gas. The shift to "being for something" will no doubt be an awkward transition for many. Old habits die hard. Earth-based religions have much to offer the global community in the areas of social support, healing, ecology and, of course, our alternative ways. If we can unify at any real level, we can offer modern society something to be very proud of.
The Witches' Voice has thought long and hard about possible ways that we CAN deal with this fire from within. It's becoming obvious that the issue of Witch Wars needs to be addressed even though it's a very touchy subject. Issues of accountability, ethics and integrity seem to be "all the buzz" in the community of late. Other than some "heated discussions" in several on-line chat rooms and message boards, Witch Wars -as a topic- has oddly NOT been taken to the pages of the Internet.
Witch Wars are like brush fires and can only be dealt with at the local level. As we all know, any fire that is "out of control" can do some real damage. That is why towns and cities have fire departments and Smokey the Bear does fire prevention ads. Consider this special series as our own "public service announcement."
It is expected that by "shaking the tree," we will no doubt get some angry email related to bringing up this "touchy subject". Some may say that we are walking on sacred ground. Good! Let those concerned tell their stories. Let's get this out into the open. The Witches' Voice has always tried to maintain a high ethical standard (it's what drives us). Although the vocal minority often comes out loud and strong, we choose to align ourselves with the silent majority. Some of the beta testers of this new section have stated that they think we are crazy to bring this "Witch Wars Thang" up. We have never "skirted" the issues and never will. When certain concerns continue to be voiced in the Pagan community, we have learned that this means that it is a real issue that should be focused on. It is our belief that open honesty is the only way.
This new and important chapter of the Witches' Voice is inspired and based on the input from over 25,000 pieces of email, 11,000 "your voice matters" submission forms, close to 5,000 "quest for unity" surveys, numerous phone calls and our personal experience.
Our vision is the hope that TWV can offer you something to think about. However, working on possible solutions to this 'fire from within' is a job for the entire community. Part of our plan is to address the issues (and not the individuals) in a way that will spark community dialogue. The topic of Witch Wars is not easy to "sugar coat" and that is not our intention here. We believe that by bringing this issue to the on-line community, this same community can provide imput on ways to solve or minimize this "glitch" in our growth.
Will there be a test? Yes! There is always a test.
