J.K. Rowling’s phenomenally popular ‘Harry Potter’ fantasy series focuses on a fictional alternate reality of a British boarding school for adolescent Witches and Wizards.

Egalitarianly, the school trains both the ‘pure blood’ and deserving ‘naturals how to hone their natural talents without regard for their potential inclinations to misuse their gifts. Upon admission, before the entire assembled school’s student body each child is placed to wear an enchanted “sorting hat” whose immediate proximity upon their head affords it the ability to predict their basic psychological bent and based upon its determination the new students are placed in dormitories with others (both newly-arrived and upper-classmen) of similar inclination.

The unspoken ‘fluffy Wiccan bunny’ issue is of course, “Why not just disallow training to those of observably malicious inclination?”

And, unsurprisingly the pragmatic answer is: Those who are truly motivated would seek whatever knowledge they could glean by whatever means… fragmentarily and haphazardly …with their self-serving ineptitude, resulting in large and small magical workings …eventually endangering the lives of both those magic workers and mundane born alike.

The backlash and “collateral damage” of which eventually complicates the lives of all. Mother Earth is after all, a predominantly closed ecosystem. In the lay vernacular, the “fart in a fishbowl” phenomena.

Because our Ecosystem is a predominantly closed environment, its raw materials both energy and matter are endlessly re-claimed and re-used. The Creator (ix) fuels this ‘machine’ with sentient quanta of perpetuating energy (Mana, Chi, Sanctifying Grace, etc.) and the Creator (ix) harvests the ecosystem’s Anima life forms singularly-perspective life’s memories. (Imagine the learning possibilities of exploring any conceivable scenario through the eyes of each and ALL of its participants.)

The core ‘secret’ has always been in plain sight. When in the Christian Book of Moses, Moses meets with the Creator and asks how Moses should represent the Creator’s name to the Hebrews. The Procreator replied: “Y.H.V.H. – I am all that ‘is’.”

The second inner secret is a word play privileged for only those genuinely listen with comprehension. The Creator (ix) is telling Moses that the Creator (ix) ’s perception exists in non-dimensional space/time, the perpetual ‘here and now’.

Einstein quantified this fundamental truth in his famous equation about the states of energy and matter being interchangeable and neither capable of being either created or destroyed. Proceeding from that obviously is that an increase in one necessitates a corresponding decrease in the quantity or quality of the other’s state.

For untold millennia, humankind has represented the concept of infinite ‘time’ in symbolic shorthand with what we know as the figure ‘8’ lain upon its side. If we were to bi-sect that symbol with an equilateral cross, and we were to move our consciousness along the figure ‘8’s path, we would move sequentially through each of the four quadrants.

If we label those quadrants -- Creative Conceptualization, Creative Actualization, Destructive Conceptualization, Destructive Actualization -- we realize these are our Creator (ix) ’s perennial activities. Our planet’s seasons mirror this fundamental truth.

NONE of the others can exist dynamically without any one or more of the others. And therein lies an uncomfortable underlying truth. Viewed from another perspective, it’s like an oscillating path of a pendulum endlessly scribing an unending chain of interconnected horizontal figure ‘8’ spirals…No progression of “time” without ‘creation’ and ‘entropy’. ‘Kali’ is not only the nurturing birthing Mother but also the ravaging avenging Destroyer.

The rock group ‘Kansas’ penned these truths in their lyrics of the classic: “Dust in the Wind”. ‘Blue Oyster Cult’ in “Don’t Fear the Reaper” (Christopher Walken’s “More cowbell! (sorry!) ”)

Those who would work ‘magick’ eventually come to terms with their deep inclination to be drawn toward working one of those four primary aspects.

That is not to say that they cannot act effectively in each of the other three… Just that their essential nature is not as deeply moved to emote and therefore workings in those secondary aspects are not as psychically empowered or as clearly refined.

It’s Nature’s design that we electively spend time and energy to align ourselves with, and to, those things in which we find deep pleasure and thereby increase our resonance with that activity.

Rowling’s four “Hogwarts' Houses” -- Raven’s Claw, Hufflepuff, Gryffendor and Slythrin -- are but thinly disguised surrogates for the four quadrant’s fledgling adherents.

Those real world magical Operants who disparage Rowling’s writing find subliminally that she strikes too close to the bone… for a Muggle. Her “Hogwarts” espouses the underlying truth that the Magick itself: it is not an intrinsic tool of either ‘good’ or ‘evil’.

And how do we actually define “evil”?

And ‘why’ was Tolkien’s Gandalf “the Grey?

Pragmatically, ‘good’ and ‘bad’ adjectival epithets or accolades are a function of the Preceptors’ circumstances and at the time of observation. If their personal circumstances were improved by your working, it was ‘white’ magick and you’re a “good” witch. If their situation degraded, the “grey scale” of one’s working proportionately darkens and you become either a “black” magician or even an “evil” witch.

But again, what is that which we term “evil”?

One of Merriam Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary’s definitions is the one I personally have found to be the most descriptive and simple. It simply states: “Evil” is gratuitous calamity.

As massive natural forces of our environment generate gigantic weather systems that bring tornadoes, floods, droughts and wild fires, which impact our personal circumstances, they do so unthinkingly and without overt malice.

In the normal course of our daily travels, we are agents of the forces of Nature. As we go about, we sometimes inadvertently impact the millions of smaller life forms in our environments. For example… ant colonies. Walking down the sidewalk we unthinkingly tread upon them.

Some of our Eastern brethren go to great lengths to minimize their impact upon other life forms. That, in itself, would have insects perceive us as a ‘bad’ hazard. However, we all have known, certain malicious children who in their idle play deliberately drown ants in a water-filled jar or use a magnifying glass to focus the Sun’s rays to incinerate ant after ant. THAT …is an obviously “evil” act!

Two aspects define “Evil”…

The Operant expended deliberate energy and resources specifically to adversely affect another conscious life form. (Our species’ awareness of other species’ sentience and perception of pleasure and pain expands daily…)

And second…

The Operant believes deeply (and often secretly) that in order for themselves to feel good or better or stimulated, they need to be personally responsible for another’s life form’s gratuitous (otherwise unnecessary) suffering …to be “above” or ‘better than’ their victim in some way.

In case you need the proverbial “boot to the head”… Unlike some others, we Pagans are answerable in confession only to the Creator (ix) .

It’s time for personal ‘examination of conscience’ and a “gut check”. You aren’t fooling the God (dess) .
