Witches And/Or Witches?

Over the past few months I have been reminded of something I had forgotten…What truly makes a REAL FAMILY!

As most of you know, my Great Grandmother raised me. She was a blessed and magickal Witch, full of wisdom, magick and love. What you may not have known is that she took me in to raise when I was only 3 months old; she was in her late 60’s. She loved me and taught me the old ways of magick, how to know from the Goddess Mother of the earth about herbs and magick. She was a Witch of mixed traditions from her Native American parents, her Cajun husband, to the Voodoo Magick of her youth in New Orleans. She was a force of nature and magick.

As a child, I had family, parents and even siblings, but I never saw them except on holidays and that was not fun. It was kind of like being the only Witch at a baptism: nobody really quite new what to do with me. I knew that I was not like the rest of “my family” and I accepted that.

But really, who wanted to be like those people? They were always fussing over who was the best at something, who had the most money or who worked the hardest, who was right and who was wrong. They were always threatening one or the other even to the point of suing each other. I always looked at them as some kind of strange beings that I wanted nothing to do with. I wondered if it was because they were of a religion that seemed to teach fear, hate and intolerance.

But what really freaked me out was when someone died. These people, who seem to hate the dearly departed until the day they died, came out of the woodwork with all kinds of wonderful words to say and to see just what they were going to get. It was like watching vultures hovering about, swooping down and taking all they could until nothing was left but an empty shell, and sometimes, they would fight over that!

Living with my Great Grandmother, I was so lucky. I had my Great Grandmother and the Aunts who all loved and raised me as their own. Yes, they would occasionally get upset with each other; that is human nature. But when that happened, they would all gather together and talk it out. Sometimes they would cry and sometimes they would fuss, but no one left until whatever it was had been talked out with a conclusion that everyone could be happy with. Then they would all stand as one all-encompassing energy, hand in hand and give blessings to the Goddess Mother for each other, for their family and for allowing them to love and understand each other more.

Until I was nearly 13 years old, it never dawned on me that my Aunts were not blood family. Even thought they were each different; different traditions, different teachings and understandings, even different skin colors, I never noticed any of that because all I knew was that they loved me unconditionally. Now I have a family, children and grandchildren of my own. I can only hope I did a good job teaching them some of what I learned as a child. I do know that my children and husband love me.

As a Witch, I have seen many different traditions of Witches. For the most part, we all work together for the greater good. We share and make an effort to have a deeper understanding of each other’s differences. This is the way it should be. We don’t have to all be the same, but we do need to accept each other no matter what they may be.

But sadly, it seems that many have forgotten the truth of who we are and it seems they are picking up those negative energies…like those who cannot accept anyone different from themselves or who they think others should be.

While on holiday, we had the chance to meet other Witches. We talked in the airports, in shops, at gatherings and the one thing I found to be true from all of these wonderful and magick souls was a feeling of family. It didn’t matter where we were from, how we were raised or what traditions of magick we followed. Witches from all walks of life sharing their wares, buying and selling with no animosity toward the other. We were still all family. We were Witches, brother and sisters of the old ways. Some were Witches newly finding their path back, some had been studying for years and years and a few of us had the blessing of being raised along the path of truth. It was one of the most magickal experiences I have enjoyed in a long time.

Recently, I have seen those who call themselves Witches harassing others for the words they use or for the terms of how they describe themselves as Witches. They quarrel over the least little thing, even to include threatening to sue one another over who has the right to say what. Really, this just breaks my heart … that is not who we are.

We are Witches born and made unto the Gods of the old world. This is the kind of behavior that we see from those other people; it is not a part of who we are… or shouldn’t be. Please, don’t call yourself a Witch, my brother or my sister, and then harass and threaten those who are Witches. It just doesn’t work that way or we look as if we are fighting over the empty shells of all those who are Witches.

We are all blessed to be and to call ourselves Witches. We are all of one all-encompassing family of light and magick. It should not matter what tradition we are, or what we do for a living, or even if every Witch on the planet buys and sells their magickal wears one to the other. We should be standing up for each other, never trying to destroy another within our own family.

So please my blessed family, remember who you are. You are Witches, You are Family, and You are the brothers and sisters of the Gods of the old worlds. Let us always stand together as one light for the good of all who are proudly called: WITCHES. For then, blessed shall we be.
