The event that transpired in Littleton, Colorado this past Tuesday afternoon left so many of us in a state of shock and disbelief. Our society held up the mirror and the sight was not a pretty one. Desperate for a quick answer (any answer), fingers were pointed at the parents, the cops, video games, the school officials, the jocks, the Goth movement, the internet, German music and of course the easy in which they armed themselves to the teeth. It turns out there was NO easy answer to this one. In fact speculation was all we had. Like all factions of our society, the Pagan community scrambled to speculate on the net and on the phone.
Knowing that 2 dozen kids got gunned down and witnessing the non stop coverage of a million refugees fleeing Kosovo has been a very humbling experience. Most of the "problems" in the Pagan community and in our society at large, pale by comparison. Most of us, affluent enough to own a computer, REALLY do have a good life. We have homes, cars, jobs, food and many wonderful friends. Recent events in the news should be a sobering call for us to stop and smell the roses and to be thankful for what we DO have.
The Combine High school issue is not specifically a Pagan issue but it was a social issue that our community could not ignore. The day after the shooting Wren posted her thoughts based on her own reaction...
"...The tragedy that occurred at Columbine High School yesterday affected us here at TWV very deeply. Horror, depression, outrage, shock and disbelief became intermingled with empathy, compassion, tears and sorrow as the scene unfolded before our eyes.
The pagan community has a very large number of healers and empaths. Witnessing such events-even those thousands of miles away-can cause certain reactions in such people. They become distressed, anxious, sad, depressed. They can also feel guilty..." - (for the rest of this editorial Click Here)
Email... Wow did we get email on this one. Dozens of pieces from Pagans trying to sort this out in their own minds. As of this writing, you can find them via the links that follow...
