This is an age of information. We can only assume it to be the point in time that the Well of Knowledge is fuller than it has ever been. History has recorded many strange and wonderful events involving human beings upon the planet. Indeed, there are many mysteries that have no logical conclusions. Was Isis ever a mortal? Did the Ark of the Covenant prove to be too powerful for human usage? Why was incest so prevalent in the stories of the divine? We can only guess, but we have a vast well of inter-connected resources from which we can at least make an educated argument for just about anything! This is the gift of the gods.
Being loyal to ones' own blood is probably the best place to begin. The blood carries so many things from history into the present. It shapes in many ways the desires and needs of the physical body. There are recent studies and several good publications that deal with the needs of particular types of blood. Certain foods are better for persons with, for example type 'O' Positive, whereas the same may not be as beneficial to a person with RH Negative. All of this comes from the history of our species and eras of various life-sustaining activities. We inherit conditions of all kinds from our parents on back through our ancestral lineage. Knowing where we have come from is a power-point of understanding. The gods that our families lent their energies towards can shed light upon our own impulses. They can give us clues to why we think and act in certain situations because of how we were raised. We can go further back to try and gain the understanding of how even our great-grandparents may have been raised by examining the adherence or non-adherence to the belief systems of their era. Even if it was a Christian sect that your great-great grandfather was involved in and your mother was some other denomination of the Christian god, the attributes and directives of the deity can vary greatly from century to century, and even decade to decade. That influence may have played a major role in the way a parent was raised, causing them to raise you according to how the energies played-out in their lives.
It is a much greater task (if not impossible in many cases) to trace our family trees. To think in relation to time being linear, humans have been on the planet longer now than ever before. Each one of us have more ancestors than there are visible stars in the sky. For all that we know, one of our ancestors may have worshipped oil, and another water which do not mix well. There is much evidence that the records of lineage however have held great importance to the ancients. This is especially true with royalty even to this day. Many of the old-world deities traveled those traced lines, and evolved with humans through the dispensations of time. Much of history is recorded and remembered due to the honor and reverence shown to deities. The traceable lines begin to fade when various pantheons were combined through marriage. Strange and mysterious goddesses caught the eye of lusty gods, and new cults came into existence. So it is possible that one can be of a particular lineage only reaching so far back in time to its own inception. The combination of deities that formed the family of bloodlines is a logical choice of loyalty if the individual is of pure breeding. There are not many in the world today that can claim such past two or three hundred years. History is a mysterious whore, and if a lad is not careful she can consume all of his resources. Jealous gods have even erased some of recorded history from temple walls in an attempt to re-write it with their own deeds. Many ancient deities such as the Willendorf Venus are so powerful to contemplate, yet so mysterious because of the lacking information from the period in time. Such forms are often that which spark the creativeness in our imaginations. Perhaps some of the meanings of our existences in this life have more to do with the development of imagination rather than the establishment and continuance of the family estate?
The gods and goddesses have made war and love for thousands of centuries. Whether they get along or not has never been a problem of the divine. It is human thought that separates love and war, good and bad, right and left! Of course the gods can get along with each other. They have no need of understanding each others intentions, for they are complete thoughts in themselves. Each is a distinct part of the All, and as the All expands, the forms evolve and combine to define the physical and spiritual worlds.
We may find ourselves in a decade of uncertainty, living the myths of deities that are strange to us. It is often hard to adjust to something new, but looking back to where we have been we realize that the Sun has never failed to rise. The Sun may only be wearing another face today, but we know that He will travel across the sky and fade to black at the end of his journey, only to be reborn tomorrow. We walk this path. We have everything that the solar deity illuminates as our resources. We can worship the orb of the Sun, or even the daisy which resembles it. We can honor the stone instead... ... ... but if it were not for the Sun, we could not see the stone. How we think about deity determines how we honor it (or not). What is best is what produces measurable results in the individual or group. Understanding enough to gain the experience of the myths of the pantheon(s) of choice is the key.
Remember that we live the myths everyday. To recognize them is to progress and become stronger in our pursuit of the reason for life. The ritual honoring of deity can utilize a mix of pantheons successfully if the practitioner has an understanding and experience of the energies locked into these wells of being. While it is true that some things in life just do not mix, it is also good to have a rarely used ingredient on the shelf for a recipe that you might just happen to run across that appeals to your 'right-now' taste buds!
