Y2k Hype a Bust! A World that Rises to the Challenge!

Wow! Here we are in the year 2000! Turns out countless conspiracy theories, y2k bugs and "end of the world" predictions never actually manifested (big surprise). The sun did rise, the machines did work and oddly the world felt like a better place! (for a dead on article check out "Apocalypse Not: Press left reporting on Y2K non-crisis" By Jon Katz)
Although, it was NOT a good weekend for those that feel the need to be "the victim", it was a wonderful transition for those of us that saw a world that wanted to heal itself. In many ways the y2k rollover was a cleansing ritual. We had to go through it in order to move forward.
As we compiled a pair of y2k collages to color this week's update, we were thrilled to revisit some of the many smiling faces that we've had the honor to share with you in 1999. Faces from all over the world. Faces that hold the light, love and hope of the NeoPagan community. These "creatures of the light" are just a sampling of the many magickal and giving folks that our community has to offer. We continue to grow and to surprise so many out there that have given us a chance. It really IS a momentum "thing" and one that will carry us into the 21st. Century.
Another year -and some say, another millennium- has begun. What impact will this turn of the western world calendar have on the pagan community? A better question, based on the numerical significance of the number 2000 itself, may well be, "What impact will the pagan community have on the world?"
The year 2000 is a "2" year. The number two, based as it is on the idea of two single digits combined together, represents diplomacy, balance and union. In diplomatic negotiations of any kind, the energy focuses on attaining a solution that will reconcile two opposing factions or concepts into a more peaceful working relationship. This can lead to cooperation even with those who are very different-or hold very different views and beliefs-from ourselves. Pagans may well find themselves initiating joint projects for the common good with some unexpected allies in the year 2000.
Two is also the number that leads to germination and the birth of something new-new ideas, new ways of interpreting what we have already learned and, of course, new life. The pagan community certainly made great strides in 1999. Media coverage was extensive and expanded the general public's view on who we are and what we believe. As the number two brings things into being and gives them form, 2000 should also be a good time to continue to build upon this base of information. The questions will be more specific, but so will be our response. 'Two' builds bridges from one side to the other and what seemed impassible is now able to be traveled with ease. Look for more widespread interest in-and tolerance for- earth-based practices this year.
Interestingly enough, the number two also vibrates at the same level as the Earth herself. Everyone will be more 'earth-conscious' this year and who knows about this energy better than the earth-based pagans? Those working on making the environment safer and cleaner may be looking to pagan beliefs and practices for some suggestions. Likewise some pagans may find themselves pushed into the spotlight if they are involved in this area already.
And let's not forget all those zeroes! The number "0" represents the egg or the female form. A 'Triple Goddess' year? Zero has the potential contained in all the other numbers and this particular year has it 'three-fold." Since the Divine Hand -because of It's potential power to create-is represented by the number zero, in the year 2000 the Goddess will actually be using three hands to sow the seeds of balance, cooperation and change. Certainly the world needs Her help and so She will be working Her magick overtime this year.
Pagans may unexpectedly discover that they are indeed holding on to the winning 'Hand' in the year 2000!
