| 'Earth Is In Trouble', So Let's Capitalize On the Trend

You would pretty much have to be avoiding living not to know that there are some very serious problems facing Mother Earth, I don’t feel it necessary to go into these as I am sure we all have varied opinions as to which of these problems is the most important to address first, and I feel that all of these problems are of great importance.
It seems that you can’t turn on the TV, the radio, or read a newspaper without hearing about another man-made disaster that is harming the earth. Along with the onslaught of media hype we have corporate greed joining hands in making us aware of these problems. Duh. Didn’t they create a majority of these problems in their quest for more of the almighty dollar?
Along with the chance to see a concert on the continent of your choice, there were many “green” offers, give always, etc. and so forth available this summer. Now that the media has given “green awareness” a nice pretty package, Big Brother is wasting no time in putting a nice bow on top of it.
Is this bad? It depends.
On the plus side, we have many more choices available to us in the form of products and services that do not do as much harm as their predecessors. On the down side, the window of opportunity for awareness will only be at the media forefront until the next trend arrives.
So how do we capitalize on this trend?
Now is a great time to get your community involved in a project that helps the earth such as cleaning up a creek, or cleaning up a piece of neglected property. What better time to start recycling or car-pooling? The fact of the matter is there are unlimited things we can do as individuals or as a group.
Keeping in mind that this trend will in all likelihood fall by the wayside, we should all seize the opportunity to educate any and all we can. If we only get through to one person then there is one more person who will take up the fight.
Those of us who have always been aware of the deep love the Mother has for us know that she forgives and asks for very little in return. Can we not return just a small amount of this love by lending a helping hand?
Speaking only for myself I can say that it takes very little effort to change the way you think in regards to an environmental consciousness. This planet that we call home is a creation of beauty and we have been blessed in being a part of this beauty.
I, for one, want to have a part in leaving as much of it as it is now for future generations to enjoy and in turn pass on.
Am I wrong for approaching such a serious topic as the destruction of our planet with a somewhat commercial attitude?
Honestly I am undecided.
I myself see the true magnitude of this problem and try my best to educate all of those I can. At the same time when I talk to people who do not share my passion for helping the Earth, it is easy to lose them.
In the pre-packed fast paced society we live in, maybe the Cheese wiz approach can work in grabbing people’s attention long enough to open their eyes. Let’s not forget how this approach made die hard patriots out of many people after 9-11.
For those of you who share my love for the Earth I am not worried because I already know how important she is to you and that you are implementing your own ideas, thoughts, and courses of action.
Maybe there is way to enlist the media’s help. When they assault us with the severity of the problem, maybe they could at the very least provide a link to sites or publications that present solutions.
Once in while maybe mainstream publications could report on the people and organizations that are working on alternative ways of preserving the planet because they care, not because they visualize a higher profit margin and increased sales of their products.
I am sure many people including many of my friends will laugh and roll their eyes at me; maybe I can get a few “go hug a tree” comments. At the least I know I will hear I am a dreamer.
They said the same thing about John Lennon, but they still quote his lyrics when they talk about peace.
Will we see a dramatic instant change? Quite likely no. But in the same aspect, the earth did not become so damaged overnight.
For too long we just said, “We will fix it later”.
Well it’s later than you think.
At our house, we have changed our approach to our garden: no more chemicals. We started recycling and we encourage all our guests to help.
None of the changes have impaired our lifestyle. If anything they have simplified it and saved us money.
The one bonus we see from these changes that we didn’t expect is the wonderful feeling we get from such simple tasks.
Can I say that I am doing all I can or should? No, is there more I can and should do, yes.
Do I have a valid excuse for not doing all I know I can and should? That depends. At times necessity overrides consciousness. I too must live in the pre-packaged hurry up and wait society.
Do I hope that my words may spark a fire no matter how large or small in others?
More than anything that is what I hope for. So I would like to ask each and every person who reads this to just take a minute and tell our Mother, thank you. When you hear someone comment on their newfound “greenness” encourage them to take it to the next level.
Together we WILL make a difference; we must because our Mothers life is at stake.
