Lady of the Forest Mist (A Story of the Woods)

It was years ago as I recall. So please sit here beside me at the fire and let us sip our tea as I recollect my thoughts:

I was a youngster at the time. Nine? Ten? Guess it doesn't matter. Just that it happened. My girlfriends and I went for a walk. It was a beautiful summer day. The birds were singing and the squirrels were chattering to us. As we got further into the woods the animals talked to each other as if in a dream: "There are strangers in our woods. Pass it on." Jeanne and Jane didnot see or hear what was going on. They just complained how noisy the animals were.

"What is wrong with those animals? Won't they stop their terrible noise?” Jeanne complained, putting her hands over her ears. As if that would really help.

"I know. I am ready to go home, ” Jane said in a pouty tone.

As we went further into the forest, I could feel such excitement around me like an electrical force and I felt that we were being watched. I even heard voices singing. Of course, I wouldn't say anything to my companions because they would only make fun of me. After all, they were blood sisters and I was just a friend. You know, blood is thicker than water.

"What does that mean? Blood thicker than water?" asked my listener.

"That means when people are related they tend to stick together. That means that people who are related stick with each other and when an outsider comes into the family, they will usually side with each other." I picked up my tea and took a sip and went back into my story.

Before we knew, it was dark. I didn't know how long we were walking through the path. There actually was a defined path. I knew to stay on it, but Jeanne and Jane wanted to walk away and just randomly try to find a way out.

"I am getting scared, ” cried Jane.

"There is nothing to be afraid of... unless we get caught by the red-eyed monster that lives in the woods, ” said Jeanne, with a gleam in her eyes, knowing it would scare Jane.

I didn't pay attention to their bickering. I was listening to a beautiful voice. Singing sweet songs..."Come to me children and you will see how beautiful life can really be" ...the singer had such a calming voice. I just wish that Jeanne and Jane could hear it too, but they were in their own little world. They didn't see the beauty around them. The trees were thick and the animals started to talk in a hush as night drew on.

"So what did you do? Weren’t you afraid Grandma?" asked my little one.

"No, honey. The woods, and those of the woods, are our friends. We need to know of their realm."

"Will you take me there, Grandma? Please, please?"

"They are with you now. Open your heart, ears and eyes, " I said and ruffled my grandchild's long hair. "Now back to my story."

"I am so afraid and hungry. I want to go home NOW!!! Jane was really upset. She was so angry she had tears in her eyes.

"I am afraid too. Especially since I mentioned the red-eyed monster that roams in the woods. I want to go home too." Jeanne threw her hands up in defeat. "I don't want to be here anymore!

“Why aren't you complaining and not afraid, Patti? Do you have a secret? Or don't even care?" I could tell that she was looking for someone blame.

"I am not afraid because there is nothing to be afraid of. You guys are too busy complaining to see the beauty around us. The songs and smell of the trees, plants, and earth. Try it.. Might be something new to you two." I walked a little ahead of them. I found a grove that had a blueberry patch and the grass nearby was beckoning me. So...

"Hey, I found a blueberry patch so we will have something to eat. They are so big and juicy and sweet."

We ate until we could not eat another berry. I silently thanked the one who gave us this food. "Oh, Mother Earth, I thank you so much for getting us this far safely, and I thank you for your bounty. Bless us as we spend the night here in the woods."

"I am tired." 'I am too." said Jeanne and Jane in unison.

"Okay, let’s stay here in this grass and rest, " I said as I pointed down to the grass.

Oh, it was so thick and plush. We didn't need a blanket or a pillow. I felt as if I were in my own bed. I can't explain how we kept warm, but it was as if we had covers on. During the night I woke up and all around us was a mist. It was white, purple, pink and it shone so. I heard a woman’s voice.

"Hello my child. I have been watching you all. I am glad that you finally took the path I have been trying to lead you on."

"Who are you?" I asked my brain still in a fog.

"I am Lady of the forest mist. I have been waiting for you for years."

"Why me?” I asked.

"You were chosen from the beginning. You could hear and feel things that other humans can't or won't. You are here to learn the ways of the Goddess."

"How?"

"Listen to your heart, child." She touched my chest above my heart. "Feel the beat, not just yours but of those around you. I know that the trees talk to you. I know that the animals commune with you. Go with your heart." She touched my face and she gazed into my eyes and I could see me the realm of the Goddess.

"Come and visit me often. I will teach you all that I know, and you, my child, will be called 'lady of the forest mist' too when you are of age. So, grow and learn all that you can. I am here for you and you will be there for others."

With that, she was gone and it was daylight and somehow we were on the boundaries of the forest right where we had started. We all looked at each other. How in the world did that happen?

I knew but I didn’t dare explain.

"So you see, my child, I am here to teach you now that you are asking questions about the voices and of the songs that you hear in the woods. You, too, have been chosen."
