Red, White, and Blue Witch
Yes, I'm Pagan, a Witch, and proud to be an American. I even vote, which seems to frighten some people. I find it strange that at holiday gatherings, such as the 4th of July, there are people that don't believe that we, as Witches and/ or Pagans, are quite as patriotic as they are. Because we choose a different way to live or worship, we cannot possibly be as “true blue” as they are.
When I hear the song, 'Proud to Be an American, ' it will bring a tear to my eye. I love the song, unless someone is trying to sing it to prove that their flag is bigger than my flag. Then, it kind of loses its meaning.
Witches are just as Red, White, and Blue as any other Americans. At times, I think we may openly share our point of view with some that believe, to be proud of our nation, we must always agree with the political leaders or right- wing groups. For most of us, that is not going to happen.
With the approaching holiday, the 4th of July, I cannot help but remember the tears, fears, and shock that came into all our lives on 9-11. My husband and I were in the air, flying to a family funeral. The captain of the plane made an announcement that we were having some minor problems with the plane and had to make an emergency landing in Texas. None of us on the plane had any idea what was going on.
The plane landed, but stopped on the tarmac and we were all told we had to depart there and walk to the passenger terminal. We weren't told anything else and I guess we were all too busy to notice the blank stares of the airline attendants as we departed the plane. We all complained, as we carefully went down the flight stairs and walked, in the scorching September heat, to the airport to find our way to the gate.
Once we entered the airport, no one really noticed the silence; it was completely quiet. Everyone just started for the nearest ticket counter to ask what was going on, protest our mistreatment, and get it fixed so we could get on our way as quickly as possible. My husband walked to the desk and asked the pale, expressionless, young man, "What's going on?" He looked at us with astonishment. He didn't understand that we had just walked in the door, clearly out of the blue, with no idea of what was happening.
He turned and said, "A plane just flew into the Trade Center. No one knows what happened, so all flights are grounded." Our mouths fell open; we could hear the words he was saying, but they didn't seem to make any sense.
Then I realized the only sound in that huge terminal was coming from across the room. I saw people standing around the TV anchored on the wall, so, I walked over to see what was happening.
It was true. I watched in shock as the TV announcer spoke about the crash. Then it happened. As I stood there watching, with strangers from all over the world, another plane hit the other tower. ‘Oh, my dear Goddess!” I cried as I fell to my knees. I couldn't believe it. This couldn't be possible. We had just moved from New York a year ago and we had friends and family there.
I looked around the airport. People were crying, some were running to get to something they believed couldn't wait, and some, like me, were just in shock. Slowly and quietly we were told there would be no flights and we would have to figure out how to get where we were going from there. Some people got angry. I don't think they really understood what was going on. Most of us just did what we could and figured it out.
So there we were, stranded in Texas, miles from home and miles from where we were going. We didn't know anyone, all the rental cars were gone, and hotels were booking up fast. Fear and anger were beginning to replace shock in the people around us.
It seems strange now; my husband called a hotel and they said to come in, that we could stay in the lobby until we found something. When we arrived, I noticed a small cloth bag above the door and it somehow made me feel better. As we walked to the reservations desk, the young lady was explaining to everyone that they had no rooms and it would be afternoon before they would know what they had available.
As I walked up to the desk, I never thought about the pentagram necklace I was wearing. I never take it off. But I noticed the young lady was smiling at me with gentle caring. Without a word, she pointed to the small pentacle ring she was wearing on her finger. Then she asked our name and handed us a room key. My husband said, “I don't understand.” The young lady said, “You called from the airport as a room became available.” As we walked to our room, my husband expressed his surprise. You see, he had never given her our name.
On September 11, 2001, we all cried as we held our families close. We prayed, set alight candles, and asked whatever deities we worshiped to help those who were truly in need. For a time, we all stood together as one nation, one people, none of us any different than the other. On that day, like so many others, we were reminded of all those who had given their lives for the freedoms we proudly enjoy. We understand and honor those proud soldiers who serve our country, Pagan and Non-Pagan. We also honor all those men, women, and children who had their lives taken during the times of darkness, both in this century and centuries passed.
The encyclopedia says that patriotism is the love of and devotion to one's country; that patriotism denotes positive attitudes by individuals to their own civic or political community, its culture, members, and welfare. Yes, we are Witches, and we are proud of the freedoms we have. Freedom of religion, that we might worship as we each see fit. Freedom of speech, to stand up and speak what we each believe. Freedom to labor for the changes we believe will make our nation greater and more united in peace. And, too, the freedoms, that allow us to disagree.
Be proud to be a Red, White and Blue Witch.
May we all be blessed with freedom and peace.
