Healing the Witch Within

As a small child raised in the mountains of the Ozarks, winter seemed more like a mystical land filled with glistening fairies and magickal spells found in every breath than a season in the year. The only time I really recognize winter as 'winter' would be if I might happen to get sick.

This didnít happen very often because my Great Grandmother was a wise and gifted healer. She was an Ozark Wise Woman and Witch. She was a beautiful proud Native American, Quapaw Indian woman born in the Missouri Territories in the 1800ís, during a time when the wisdom of the old world, healing gifts of herbs and the powers of the Goddess came naturally and in the teachings passed down throughout the centuries.

My Great Grandmother was in her late seventies when she was given a small baby only a few days old to raise. This child had been foretold to her in a dream many years earlier as her legacy. I pray to the Goddess that I have, in my life, somehow fulfilled the hopes and dreams that my Great Grandmother had.

This winter seems to be unrelenting in its dark and cold. I believe it started earlier than in several years past. Even the summer just didnít seem to be as warm as I needed and desired deep within my spirit. Once the winter began, it just seemed to get colder and filled with so much ice and snow many of us wondered if the sun would ever return to her warming glory.

Perhaps this was a sign or a warning of what was to come. During this time, I found myself in need of professional medical assistants. My Great Grandmother taught me the old ways of health and healing. How to help others and understanding their needs when required has always been one of the gifts she give me. Coming from a long line of healers, shamans, Witches and magickally spirited beings, I almost felt that Iíd somehow failed in simply being ill.

As I lay in the hospital in the tiny little cubicle waiting to be wheeled into surgery, I kept replaying memories of my Great Grandmother. As a child, I didnít really remember my Great Grandmother ever being sick. But I do remember the magick she held within her hands when someone came to her ill, or grieving, or in need of any kind.

Hospitals are strange places for those of us who see spirits and dead people. Itís not really something that we like to talk about and most of us really avoid hospitals at all cost. Due to the drugs we have while there, we sometimes tell the nursing staff and doctors what we see and hear. This can cause a range of outcomes, from those taking care of you not wishing to return to our rooms or, occasionally, those taking care of us running from our room in tears.

Yet, there are positive aspects. The ability to share with those whom have passed and may be a little lost or confused about where they are at or helping a child and allowing him/her to find his/her way forward, or helping others in finding their family lost in time. And sometimes, it is a place where we personally receive messages from our own families. This happens because the veil between life and death within our own spirits can be extremely thin.

This is one of circumstances. It happened to me during my surgery and recuperation. I received a message, a gift, a memory from my Great Grandmother.

I remembered that the winter had been long and cold and everyone was so glad that the morning sun was finally warming the earth. Bits of snow still held tightly around the shadowed frame of the small wooden house, but for a farm family work begins as soon as the ground begins to thaw. So it was normal that the farm workers and men began to show up at my Great Grandmothers expecting lunch to be prepared.

For as long as I can remember, my Great Grandmother would begin cooking lunch for all the farm workers as soon we finished cleaning away the breakfast dishes. But on this day she had not. Even the workmen were beginning to be worried. When we looked around and found her, she was sitting in her wooden rocking chair in front of the big rock fireplace. She was holding her head with one hand, her eyes were closed, and she was so still it actually scared me.

Gently, I took my small hand and placed it on top of hers. Looking into her face seeking out her big black eyes I asked, what was wrong? Quietly she told me she was sick, that she needed to rest, and that she was going to need some help getting well. That was frightening news for a little girl of 9 years-old.

After a little while, my Great Grandmother explained how she was feeling and told me that I would be in charge of helping her heal. So, as my Great Grandmother napped in the big wooden rocking chair in front of the fireplace, I carefully went into the kitchen to prepare all that I could to help her heal.

I went through the blue jars of herbs that my Great Grandmother had for healing, doing my best to take out each of the perfect herbs needed to make her well again. Iím not sure how long it took, but I carefully brewed together the herbs making tea and soups I believed would help my Great Grandmother.

My Great Grandmother recuperated in a few days and our lives returned to normal. Even to this day, I can name off every single magickal and healing herb I used for each healing tea, brew and potion I made. I still use some of the healing chats and blessings now I wrote for my Great Grandmother when needed. I had just forgotten what made them so important. Sometimes, we need a little loving reminder from those spirits and souls that we loved us so much.

There is a great truth for healers, doctors and others who have the blessed and bewitching gifts of healing. We do not always have the ability of self-healing. Perhaps it is because we need the understanding of what it means to be ill and to recall the need help to sometimes seek healing from others and to remember the old ways, including the Gods. Maybe this is so we keep truly humble within our own spirits.

My Great Grandmother was the most gifted of healers ever blessed to walk this earth. She was small in stature, but carried a power and respect far beyond anything I have ever seen again in my lifetime. But when she needed help, she asked. Teaching me the greatest lesson of all.

ďLet your mind weary and your spirit becomes tired.
Let your spirit tire and your body becomes defeated.
Let your body become defeated and soon you will be lost.
When you are lost, it can be difficult to find your way home.
So keep all: Mind, Body and Spirit sound within the blessings of the Goddess.Ē

--Words of a Wise Witch, my Great Grandmother Ms. Lula who lived and lives on: 1890-1983. (93 years. That she will admit too.)
