Holistic medicine: a doctrine of preventive and therapeutic medicine that emphasizes the necessity of looking at the whole person--his body, mind, emotions, and environment--rather than at an isolated function or organ and which promotes the use of a wide range of health practices and therapies. It has especially come to stress responsibility for "self-healing," or "self-care," by observing the traditional commonsense essentials of exercise, healthful diet, adequate sleep, good air, moderation in personal habits, and so forth.
The term holistic medicine became especially fashionable in the late 20th century (the International Association of Holistic Health Practitioners was founded in 1970, assuming its current holistic name in 1981). In its underlying philosophy, in emphasizing the provision of whole care to a person or patient, holistic medicine is not new, being inseparable from any traditional health care of good quality. Holistic medicine in extreme instances, however, has tended to equate the validity of a wide range of schools or approaches to health care, not all of them compatible and some of them competitive, some scientific and some unscientific. Although mainstream Western medical practices are not ignored, they are seen as only one part of the available therapies and by no means the only effective ones. Congresses and conferences on holistic health have thus drawn not only representatives of medical schools and institutions but also advocates of such widely varying concepts as acupuncture, alternative childbirth, astrology, biofeedback, chiropractic, faith healing, graphology, homeopathy, macrobiotics, megavitamin therapy, naturopathy, numerology, nutrition, osteopathy, psychocalisthenics, psychotherapy, self-massage, shiatsu (or acupressure), touch encounter, and yoga.

The modern world offers a great plethora of medical resources. The Pagan world offers a vast profusion of natural healing resources. As Pagan/Witch parents we have a limitless ocean of knowledge to cast our nets into when seeking a holistically healthy lifestyle for our children and ourselves.
When walking between the worlds of modern medicine and natural medicine, balance is the key in determining the best health and lifestyle course. Being Pagans/Witches does not require we "forsake" the modern world of medicine, just as being a "modern" person does not require us to "forsake" natural world of medicine. We have before us a great opportunity in achieving a well-balanced complimentary healthstyle for ourselves and our children. We can see and appreciate the advances of modern medicine, as well as see and understand the gifts of natural and alternative medicine. Like the Art card in the Tarot Deck we need to strive for a blending and integration of these two amazing, in their own right, fields of medicine.
Quiet observation would first serve in determining what best works in your situation. As each life and elements thereof are unique, so needs each life its own unique approach. It is in the stillness of tranquility we can best hear our needs spoken without static. Then research, there are an amazing number therapies, practices and routes one can take, it is only through truly understanding them can we make an enlightened decisions for our lives and those of our children. Only after we understand what we and they respond best to, what our needs are, and what the different approaches offer and do not offer, can we best choose.
We also need to be mindful of the laws concerning medical care, public health and children. Legal precedent clearly states that parents must act in the best interests of their children and that of public health and safety. We can choose or not choose a traditional medicinal path for ourselves and our personal treatment, but we can not withhold life sustaining treatment or medically necessary needs from our children, as this falls under child health and safety laws. However, there is some flexibility in what we can choose in determining our children's medical direction. You may want to explore homeopathy, herbal medicine, naturopathic medicine, aromatherapy and essential oils to name a few. Slow changes and incorporations are the best route, it allows you to determine what is working and what is not, and make changes accordingly.
I personally subscribe to a balance, as stated above in dealing with medical issues and the general heath of our little ones. Modern medicine has many advances to offer cures for disease that would have killed just a 100 short years ago, the advances are remarkable. As a Reiki practitioner, studying herbologist, alternative healer, Witch and mother, I an attest to the unbelievable and mind blowing effectiveness of alternative medicines as well. Somewhere between the extremes of either medical path is where personal medical wisdom lays.
May health and its bounty be yours!
