Even though I knew what I would be in the envelope, seeing the official words on paper still hurt. Put an end to the uncertainty, put an end to unrealistic hopes: Christopher Hayes died on June 16, 2012.
I met Chris at Rites of Spring in western Massachusetts in 1990. My first Rites, and I was painfully shy and feeling quite isolated. I wandered around the dining hall, not quite knowing what to do with myself. Then here was this warm, affectionate giant of a man, saying "I hope you don't mind, I just have to hug you!" There was nothing small and mean about Chris. He was big in every way. Big-hearted, big hugs, big smile, big blue eyes and very long gold-streaked hair that made me quite envious. We spent quite a bit of time talking. Unfortunately we both were at the end of unhappy relationships, so we limited our contact to letters (pre-email days.) The following year I was available, he was not. And so it went for several years, until one Rites of Spring he was not there working in the kitchen as I always had found him. Nobody knew where he was....
Fast forward a number of years, to 1999. Now computer-savvy, I found his father's phone number, and we joyfully reconnected, eventually marrying. But everyone has a shadow side, everyone has lessons of the spirit to work on. We had a soulmate connection in that sense, bringing out both the best and worst in each other, until we parted. Losing the mother he lived with and cared for was the final blow. He had sacrificed much of his wants and needs for her. After losing so many dearly loved friends and relatives in his past, he could not overcome this loss, finally letting his own shadows darken his spirit and break his health along with his heart.
Chris has Craft family and Earthspirit friends from past years here on Witchvox. When you remember him, think of his spirit sailing free at last, for he loved the Mother and her Ocean more than he could ever express......
