From Wicca to Warlock: Dealing with Opposition From Within

Author: Silver Phoenix

It is hard as a practitioner to follow the path of Spirit. Many times you encounter people who would oppose you, discredit you, and attempt to convert you. There are many “good people” in this world who feel that their way of doing things is the only proper way, and anything beyond that, does not deserve validation. So what happens when the person who opposes you is someone who once followed the path of Spirit himself or herself?

How do you, as a Spiritual person yourself, respond? Do you attempt to discredit their arguments that attempt to discredit you? Do you ignore them; take the higher road, regardless of the damage done to your reputation? Do you rebuke them, attempt to discuss the problem and reach a solution, regardless of how fruitless that may be?

How do you respond when they attempt to mislead and corrupt others? When they attract others of the Spiritual paths, and convince them that their ways are wrong, harmful, and malevolent?

Do you attempt to protect those innocent people who are being misled? Do you try to maintain relations with them in hopes that they may become un-befuddled, and realist that they are being misled? How do you respond when those people begin to support the ramblings and accusations of the one who started the whole fiasco?

There have always been times in the history of cultures that someone decides that the path they are on is suddenly unacceptable and will leave that path. They may have evolved to a higher calling, or lost faith in their path. Then there are times when someone decides to continue following the path, but will twist the words, meanings and practices, to achieve their own ends. There is a word for this type of person: Warlock: A deceiver, liar or breaker of oaths.

There are many times when we encounter people like this. Someone who claims to understand how a Spiritual belief system operates based solely on his or her own interpretations. Suddenly though, they wish for the spotlight, to be viewed as the expert in the subject so they begin to twist little things around to fit their means. Suddenly a word with no negative meaning has a secret malevolent agenda when used. Suddenly ritual practices meant to protect and guard those involved are harmful and must not be used. This puts any involved in danger.

But the question stills remains: How do you respond?

How do you respond to someone who manipulates and twists the core philosophies that you believe in so that others will believe that you are threatening? How do you respond when the mere mention of your beliefs sends others into hysteria? How do you respond when the work you perform to help others, is being blocked or negated by others?
How do you respond when a Wiccan leads a Witch Hunt?

You don’t. It seems almost simple, but it is the hardest of all the Challenges we as Wiccans and Spiritualists face: To Be Silent. To remain quiet and seemingly ignorant of the gossip, rumors and accusations we know to be false, no matter how deeply they may hurt. This in turns allow the moment of intense emotions: anger, hurt, betrayal, and sadness, vindictiveness even, to pass by us and allow us to maintain our Spiritual dignity. That we do not bow to the winds of gossip and lies, no matter how hard they may blow upon the mountain of our Faith.

There will always be times in our lives when someone will oppose us. Someone who will stand before us and throw accusations that we know to be false. It is in those moments that we must hold true to ourselves and not allow ourselves to lessen who we are to rebuke them.

“Honesty has a beautiful and refreshing simplicity about it. No ulterior motives. No hidden meanings. An absence of hypocrisy, duplicity, political games, and verbal superficiality. As honesty and real integrity characterize our lives, there will be no need to manipulate others.” -- Chuck Swindoll

Let us remember to be honest in ourselves and with others, so that the truth of our culture may forever be seen. It is in honesty that we lie not to others; in maturity, we lie not to ourselves. The truth has an amazing way of coming upon people when they least expect it. It is in those moments that they may choose to ignore it, or listen to it. The hardest thing for many to do is to admit that they are wrong, that they have erred. As a Spiritual person, we must surrender judging another, for we may not have the entire truth of the situation.

We must allow the Fates to choose the course and the outcome; we merely pay witness. So we must also remember that in honesty we do not manipulate others, nor do we manipulate ourselves. Do not let moments of upset cause you to forget who you are, what you believe; and manipulate yourself into a reaction that is uncharacteristic.

We as Spiritualists, Pagans, Wiccans, Mystics, or whatever title you prefer, are working toward a common goal. A better life. Is that not what we do? We improve the life we are living, the world around us, the knowledge we have, and the knowledge we share. So let this be yet another way of improving ourselves for a better life. By removing the negative so that it does not become part of our culture. By being the Spiritual person who we are, and not abandoning those beliefs for what is easy.

We are Spiritual. We harm none, not even with words. Our greatness, our dignity; is held to the facts that we know we are not bad; we are not malevolent. We stand strong in hopes that someday others may awaken and see the path before them as it is meant to be.

All paths are different, each journey unique; but we all arrive at the same destination. Let us not forget that.
