The light we see by affects our perception of colors. Our perception of the colors in our environment affects our state of mind. Our state of mind affects the disposition of our moods. Our moods affect our ability to perceive as well as our ability to think, communicate, create and to solve problems. There are other effects upon our biology as well as metaphysical impacts, which also include impacts on magick as well.
Recently the light in our environment has been changed with the introduction of new light sources. Incandescent, Fluorescent, Halogen, Sodium, Mercury and Halide light fixtures have been called on to substitute for the illumination of our sun, indoors and when the sun has set.
It took some time for Incandescent lights to be engineered to emit a harmonic fraction of the color temperature of atmosphere-filtered sunlight, thus becoming acceptable to our eyes and vision. Until this happened, Mr. Edison's innovation were not widely appreciated nor utilized, despite the general mania for "electric illumination".
The other lights that followed all emit altered spectra. Fluorescent is greenish, Sodium is orange; Halogen, Mercury and Halide are bluish. Eventually the filter coating on the insides of fluorescent lamps approached the acceptable "soft white" standard of incandescent bulbs. Although they are still noisy and not that efficient since they actually emit primarily in the Ultraviolet spectra and the coating filters this out.
Sodium lamps have not had their spectra corrected, limiting their use to street lighting, security lighting and some agricultural applications. If one goes to an area where these are used, the effects on vision and sight alone are quite startling. Halogen lamps have been slightly corrected in spectra and have found some use as display lighting in art galleries and jewelry stores.
Both Mercury and Halide lamps have not had their spectra corrected and despite this are widely used in street lighting and big box store lighting, respectively. Very little concern is shown to the effects of altered spectra on humans. Indeed the actual reason for using these light sources for large-scale illumination is that surveillance cameras "see" quite well under these types of lighting.
Like most products introduced into our societies, no comprehensive testing for environmental impacts, or possible negative physical, emotional or cognitive effects has been done. This situation is becoming much worse with the introduction of yet another type of lighting with very divergent spectra. This is the Light Emitting Diode or L.E.D. a highly directional source that has so little in common with the spectra that human sight has evolved to see by.
Anyone who has fallen for the hype of a LED flashlight knows what I'm referring to. While these flashlights are very bright if one looks directly into them, when you try to see what LEDs illuminate, it is very hard to distinguish details. In fact, despite their "brightness" it takes much more powerful LEDs than what is in most flashlights to produce measurable "lumens" which are a standard of light output. This is not to mention the aspect of "usable lumens" or light output by which your eyes can actually see something and discern details.
Another area in which use of LEDs has spread is that of entertainment lighting. While the color of "white" LEDs is bad, being of divergent spectra, harsh and highly directional, the "color" of red, yellow, green and blue LEDs is much worse. Remember that the use of color in entertainment lighting is to invoke moods and if the spectra of the lighting is altered to such alien extremes as LEDs are, then the moods are altered as well and flawed in their impurity. And this affects everything else as well.
So if the spectra output of LEDs is so divergent from what our sense of vision evolved to see by, why are they being used? We are told that LEDs are very long lived, although the claims have moderated away from the hype of the initial claims of 300, 000 to 500, 000 hours of operational life to still inflated figures of 100, 000 to 150, 000 hours. Truth be told, quality of manufacture (or more precisely - lack thereof) can result in LEDs that last anywhere from a mere 5 hours to half their stated life. This is why LEDs are now designed in arrays of multiple LEDs.
We are also told that LEDs are very energy efficient and compared to Incandescent - they are, if one ignores two factors. The first being that individual LEDs need to consume at least 1 watt to have any measurable lumen output. Meaning that large arrays require 20 to 60 watts. The second factor is that of "usable lumens", meaning light output by which human eyes can actually see. There has been some speculation that LEDs suddenly ‘acquired’ the ability to have measurable lumen output some years after they were introduced by altering the measuring instruments and the frequencies at which the measurements are taken.
In other words the only way for LEDs to produce measurable lumens was to alter the definitions away from "usable lumens". So why are the divergent spectra of LEDs not being corrected by filtering? Well, such filtering would drastically reduce the lumen output below anything usable, since the output spectra are so divergent from the natural light our vision can actually use to see with. So if LEDs are neither as long-lived nor as energy efficient and the illumination is not as usable by human eyes, the question remains, why is their use being pushed?
The answer is that such lighting is not being deployed for our benefit, rather for the benefit of the Charge Coupled Devices that are the heart of all modern surveillance cameras. Spy cameras, it turns out, see very well under light with spikes in the infrared and blue frequencies. Light that is very directional, high contrast and deficient in normal color spectra is well suited for machine vision.
So even if it is harmful to humans -- and perhaps even because it is harmful to humans -- LED technology will be developed and deployed. Note that there are already several types of LED "light" weapons on the market, touted as "non-lethal", even though several have died during research and development of these new weapons, meant to be used against humans.
Remember that what we humans see is entirely dependant on the type and spectra of the lighting that is illuminating everything around us. The light we see by affects our perception of colors. Our perception of the colors in our environment affects our state of mind. Our state of mind affects the disposition of our moods. Our moods affect our ability to perceive as well as our ability to think, communicate, create and to solve problems. There are other effects upon our biology as well as metaphysical impacts. There are also well known correspondences between colors and magick in almost all paths.
If uncorrected artificial lighting shifts the frequencies of the rainbow of colors around us, we are damaged by the alteration of our potentials and perceptions when shifting the spectra of our rainbows creates limitations to our ability to perceive naturally. Consider that the colors in our environment affect all of our potentials… from the clarity of our thoughts to the purity of our moods to our ability to perceive solutions to problems.
So from the viability of our biology to the shifting of our nightmares into sustainable dreams, to our abilities to use color in magick with reliable results, spectra that is altered affects everything that we will to become.
