The Dream Eater--A Practical Use of Summoning Talismans

Dreams are the pathway into past lives, but they are also a means for the mind to subconsciously work through everyday problems. People can sometimes remember the last dream they had before waking, but it is not the only dream they experience throughout the night. As the body recharges its energy through sleeping, the dreams determine what type of energy that will be: negative or positive.

When enough negative energy builds up, dreams can reflect the darkness through terrifying nightmares. This energy created from nightmares can follow people into their waking state, and it can poison their attitudes and perspectives. However, when the energy accrued during sleep is positive and calming, they will awaken rested and mirthful. Most of the time, people will experience a balance between nightmares and pleasant dreams, but sometimes people become trapped in their own negativity. Nightmares every night leech away at their mind and body, leaving them downtrodden and lost throughout the day.

In order to rid themselves of nightmares, people try many things: meditation, dieting, and/or counseling. These all work for the most part, but sometimes the negativity can be stubborn, and it will not easily go away. For these times, a Witch may provide a spiritual remedy through special talismans.

Talismans are powerful tools in the Craft, which can greatly aid a Witch in his/her everyday life. With the right energy and intention, there is almost no problem that cannot be solved with the right talisman. Though most probably imagine a piece of jewelry when they hear the word “talisman”—and they are not wrong—talismans are not only fancy baubles to be donned. In fact, a talisman could be created from the most commonplace items and placed in specific locations.

One such talisman is the Talisman of the Dream Eater. Now, at first glance, the name of this spirit may seem a bit off-putting, but a Dream Eater is nothing to be feared. Randomly, these spirits may visit a person at night, and they will feast on the energy put out by dreams. With the right talisman placed underneath a pillow or mattress, a Witch can call out to one of these spirits as he/she dreams and have negative emotions and energy eaten away.

It is important to remember that people typically dream about the last things they ponder before sleep. If their minds are corroded with negative thoughts, their dreams will reflect this turmoil. Normally, it is advised to meditate on happy things before bed to avoid such negative dreams; however, the Dream Eater is not choosy on what it feasts upon. This is why with this particular spell, it is imperative the Witch do the opposite and meditate on the negative energy and emotions he/she wishes to expunge before going to sleep.

For the most part, the Dream Eater talisman has always been successful, and it can be forged in numerous ways. However, a simple version of the talisman, which has proven to be effective with friends, is as follows:

-Stuff the end of a clean stocking with cotton, a pinch of rosemary, a pinch of sage, and the ashes of a parchment with a list of negative feelings upon it.
-Tie the stocking with a black thread and inscribe the name of the spirit on the stocking with a black marker. It is more potent when using the Theban alphabet.
-Place the talisman on the altar and infuse it with energy and intention.
-As the talisman is placed upon the altar, strike the bargain by invoking the preferred entity of sleep or dreams, such as Morpheus, Somnus, Caer Ibormeith, Hypnos, Duma, etc.:

O Morpheus, send your Dream Eater,
A beacon shines the path to my bed.
O Morpheus, send your Dream Eater,
I vow your child shall be fed.
O Morpheus, send your Dream Eater,
Let my nightmares’ power be undone.
O Morpheus, send your Dream Eater,
So mote it be and harm to none.

After the spirit visits the Witch and devours the negative energy, he/she will awaken feeling freed from the binds of darkness. Though negativity can never be completely destroyed, as it is a part of life and has its own purpose, the Witch will find the negative influence greatly lessened. If the negativity returns during the day, the Witch simply repeats the process of the previous night.

With a cleaned psyche, the Witch can enjoy a happier quality of life. The mind will be open to learning new things during the day and an unblocked path of energy will always facilitate desired results in other facets of the Craft.

However, there is always a bit of risk involved with conjuring spirits. As the Dream Eater poses no real threat, so long as it is eating the correct energy, it is important to know when the spirits’ services are no longer needed. Once this happens, the spirit must be thanked and the talisman must be burned, not stored away. The talisman acts as a beacon for the Dream Eater, and it will come to its call. If the talisman is boxed away on some high shelf and far from a dreamer, the spirit will go hungry. Not only is this in violation of the spiritual contract you made and very disrespectful, it can cause problems. Hungry Dream Eaters will return with more Dream Eaters, and sometimes other unwanted spirits may follow.

Furthermore, these unwanted spirits could cause unpleasantness for the Witch. There has not been a real case in which something demonic has been invited, but it is not beyond the realm of possibility. At the very worst, a Witch has suffered night terrors and a short bout of misfortune as the unwanted spirits were mischievous imps. As with all things magical, a Witch must exercise respect for the Craft and responsibility for the forces he/she calls. As long as the contract is honored, there will be no problem.

Thank you for reading. Good luck and sweet dreams!
