| Sacred Space

IMHO there needs to be more of it!!!
But seriously, sacred space means so many things to me. It can be physical, mental, emotional, magickal, work related, relationship oriented, etc.
Sacred space to me is when you take the time to yourself in some form or fashion to consciously connect with the universe. That can take so many different forms I wouldn't be able to list them all here. A few can range from just a spot in the corner of a quite room to full blown cast circle to your own time and space to dance to some great music that alters your mood and mental state to ... .. well you get the picture.
When I meditate I not only make sure I have physical sacred space to relax and work in but I also make sure my mental state finds that sacred space to work in also. I have various methods to reach that level but it doesn't require anything but a quite room and personal ability.
I don't think sacred space needs to be ritualistically set up. You don't NEED candles, incense, water, salt and all the tools to create sacred space. If that is what you are comfortable with and helps you create the mood needed then go for it. But it is not necessary.
I have found over time that I use tools less and less and use my mind and imagination more and more. It can be challenging and rewarding all at the same time. But for me I find the process of doing all that needs to be done to support the use of tools (like making sure you have what you think you need and going through the motions of doing each physical step of lighting candles, casting circle, etc) takes away from what I am trying to accomplish most of the time. And a few times I have been too tired after setting everything up to use the simple sacred space needed for a basic reason effectively. I believe there can be too much of a good thing sometimes.
Don't get me wrong, I do occasionally use tools and other things in creating sacred space. They can be a beautiful addition if others are observing and on occasion I just feel like it would be fun to use them, but for the most part I don't see the need to use them to create sacred space to work in.
Since scared space also means so many different things to everyone not everyone will approach the subject the same way. Some might only think of the space in a cast circle as sacred space. Still others might think like myself and any moment and or place in time can be used and thought of as sacred space. My car has been sacred space while driving in rush hour traffic in rain so bad that I could barely see the tail lights in front of me. It became a sacred space of protection and transportation imbued with the magick and desire to get me to my destination in one piece with no one coming to harm in the process. My shower has become sacred space when I lock the door and lock out everyone so I have a few minutes to myself when I can relax and take care of me. My desk at work has become sacred space when I need to mentally shield myself from the hectic ness of work and just take a few deep breaths. I consider all of that creating sacred space for me.
My basic method of creating sacred space is what I use when I meditate. I first ground and center myself. Then I lay down on my bed in the dark and do some deep breathing. After awhile I start relaxing my body, starting with my feet and working my way up to my head. As I pass each chakra point I stop and spend a few moments on that area. After all that I let my mind wander or journey. For a more basic set up of sacred space I take a few deep breaths and imagine my whole body draining the stress down through my feet. Then I think of what needs to be done, whether a quick prayer or incantation or just a few mind calming words to myself to make it through what ever stress is currently weighing on me. Both of these situation I would consider myself setting up sacred space in which I can connect the subconscious and the conscious.
I can honestly say I have on occasion also used sacred space as a time out of sorts for me. I have a 9 year old daughter, 2 cats, a boyfriend and I am expecting in November. There are times when I just need a mental time out and I will tune everyone out and go into my mind and take the time I need to recollect and reorganize so I can face the day. Is this sacred space? I think so. I am reconnecting to myself. Whether it be my higher self or that part of myself that stores the extra patience and energy needed for the stressful times it is still sacred space to me and the "time out" is a quick way to do that. I can do that doing dishes, watching TV, cleaning, sewing, etc. It never lasts long but it always calms me and puts me in a more positive and productive mind frame.
So, as you can see sacred space means many things to me. It can be simple or elaborate. It can be quick or take a lot of set up time. I am not saying that my way is the best, just that it works for me. But no matter what you call sacred space or how you utilize it sacred space allows you to go within yourself and connect with that part of yourself that doesn't always get to come out and play. And that is a wonderful thing no matter how you do it.
Blessings love and peace
