The 3rd Annual OHF Spring Gala

To the casual observer, it would look like a black-tie fundraiser - a not-unusual sight in DC during an election year. Upon closer inspection, however, some important differences would emerge. There are no campaign buttons, there seem to be some renaissance gowns and ritual robes mixed in with the formal wear, and is that a four-foot long sword on the auction table?

What our visitor would have actually discovered is The Open Hearth Foundation Spring Gala, a Pagan charity event held annually in our nation's capital. At the same time, our hypothetical visitor might be forgiven the mistake. This year's event enjoyed an exciting new level of sophistication with a three-star hotel venue, a three-course gourmet dinner, live dinner and dance music, and over 100 well-turned Pagans gathered in support of a good cause.

Sponsored by The Open Hearth Foundation, Inc. (OHF), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) Pagan organization serving the Washington, DC region - the 2004 OHF Spring Gala helped raise more than $2,400 for the creation of a permanent Pagan community center facility in the DC region, a project the OHF has been working on since 1999.

While dining on baby spinach salad and the pecan-crusted chicken breast (or the equally delicious vegetarian lasagna), Gala attendees were treated to a beautiful live piano selections by Steven Papier. After coffee and dessert (a lemon raspberry torte), and a brief set of announcements, Gene Pool Zombie took the stage and cranked up the first of several highly energetic sets that kept the dance floor well populated.

Also featured at the ball was an impressive collection of auction and raffle items, including two VIP tickets to the upcoming Potomac Celtic Festival and a complimentary pass for two to the Arena Stage production of "Orpheus Descending" by Tennessee Williams.

The Spring Gala is the largest annual fundraising event for The Open Hearth Foundation, and is rapidly becoming the most well-attended social event for Pagan and Pagan-friendly folks in the DC area. This year, the Spring Ball set new attendance records with more than 110 attendees.

Special thanks go out to out The Spring Gala Event Committee Chair (Sherry Marts) as well as the many volunteers, silent auction and raffle donors, and individuals that came out to help make this year's Ball such a smashing success.

Special thanks also goes to our several table sponsors, which include DC Radical Honesty, Feri Apprenticeship, Becoming, DC Radical Faeries, Chesapeake Pagan Community, Shrine of the Sacred Arts, and Four Quarters Interfaith Sanctuary.
