| The Spring of Artemis and the Faeries

Author: Christopher Aldridge

Living out in the country of North Carolina, surrounded by wilderness and forests, I have this spring felt the love, power and light of Artemis, Goddess of the hunt, wilderness and animals, like never before. With her divine and all so wise hand, she has reached out and touched my heart and filled me with her energy and spirit so much that, for the first time, I felt compelled to write a prayer, praise and article in honor of her highness of the wild who graces my home with her glory.
“Our Lady of the hunt, who reigns over the wilderness and sits on the thrones of Olympus that towers in the heavens, glorious is your name, mighty is your hand and fierce is your heart. With a spirit as ever-lasting as the moon over which you rule, a light as bright as the rising sun which is that of your precious brother Apollo, and a beauty as astounding as the stag, protect and forgive us of our offenses. Do not allow us to fall into the bondage of evil, but instead break free of its chains. Favor our magick in heaven and remember our good deeds as you enter the palace of the Gods. I pray this in the name of all that is good and divine, so mote it be.”
Artemis is a very beautiful, powerful and valuable Goddess to have at your side, for her magick is unyielding, her wisdom infallible. To know that she rules over the forests gives me great comfort when I step outside, for I know I love her and she loves me. Such an enormous amount of magick and life thrives in the forests of Earth, like the Fairies and Dryads who also never leave me once I enter their domains. Whenever one is in the wild, they should call on the power and protection of Artemis, for they may get a once in a lifetime friend. In the darkness her moon will brighten your path, and in the thickest jungle she shall be your great navigator.
I have noticed many times in the forests that Artemis sends her spirits to watch over me, for protection from harm and observation of my actions. Faces appear to me among the trees as the winds of Aeolus gently caress their soft leaves, as if nature itself looks upon me. However, it is a pleasant feeling, for the good spirits are so close to me that they feel but a breath away. I thank Artemis for her love, kindness and ever-watchful eye, her guidance and grace.
When I speak her name, it is as if the trees bow, the flowing mountain streams slow to acknowledge her presence, the birds sing almost in tune like trumpets announcing royalty, and the creatures pause in astonishment. If she did physically stand before me, I wonder if I could see past her shining glory to her face. If I could only reach forth and fall into her embrace and kiss her cheek, oh how much greater my magick would be.
The Faeries.
No matter how old you are or what sex, it is not silly or insane to believe in faeries, especially if you have seen them. So many people fear ridicule and possibly public humiliation if they announce their faith in the little people. But I fear not the judgment of men and women on Earth who denounce something they have never seen or experienced. I think that history has clearly shown that just because you cannot see it, does not mean it’s not there. I can feel the energies of the faeries all around my country home. And while some of my friends and family have laughed at me for believing in the winged creatures, I know that human beings have a general fallacy as to what reality and fantasy is. While mankind pretty much thinks that they know everything, we actually know so little that it’s scary.
What you must look at is the fact that virtually everything was a myth until it was discovered, and virtually everything was impossible until it was accomplished. Who are we to say what is possible and not? We are but subjects of the divine and the universe. We are so fast to assume that we are the most important and know everything there is to know, but this is a fallacy. We are but a part of the world and universe, we are not the rulers or creators of it. Not everything was meant to be right in front of our eyes. We are meant to look for and have faith in some things.
I don’t believe anything is impossible. I believe that the only things that are impossible are the ones we believe to be. If you believe in the faeries and respect them, you have a good chance of seeing them and/or feeling their energies and presence. There have been so many adult testimonies around the world telling of the sightings of faeries. They are real and I am excited and honored to know that my mind is free enough to acknowledge the existence of the little folk.
Since becoming Wiccan, I have always had great love, respect and admiration for the good faeries. In fact, they were the first magickal companions I obtained in my practices. I have more books on faeries than on any other magickal creature, and part of my Wiccan path is to become completely loved by the faeries so that they will always favor me with their magickal blessings and guidance. They can be very powerful and influential companions to have, but even dangerous at times. You always want to be very careful not to offend them or harm their domains and sacred things. There have been times in history when people have paid dearly for angering a faery, good or bad. You must be very careful. Know what you are doing before you try to encounter them.
As with many other magickal spirits that guard me, I obtained some favor from the female faeries in my first meditation to find protective spirits. After I had obtained their favor, I had a dream that I had never had before or since. I dreamed that I was on the bottom floor of a ruined building, perhaps a temple, and there were no walls so that pure light shined through all around me. I stood in the middle of a church aisle and an altar stood nobly before me. As I approached and kneeled before it, I saw dozens of the little creatures fluttering around it with red and blue wings. I felt their love and favor, and from that point on I knew they were with me.
I built them a beautiful faery garden outside my bedroom window. The main flowers were roses and sunflowers. Cute little vines also grew among the mini furniture, fountains and offering bowls. I would leave milk, honey and wafers for them almost all the time. Sometimes I would sit down and watch the garden, expecting to see one of the little people peek around the corner at me. It was a very magickal establishment that I had built. And one of my female Wiccan friends informed me that she had never known a male Wiccan to love faeries as much as me and build them a garden. Of course, I am sure this was only from her viewpoint. I am positive that other male Wiccans have.
I never felt totally disappointed or unfaithful at not seeing them here in our world because I knew they could not stay here very long, which is usually why people only catch glimpses of them in pictures and on camera. Although I had read many stories about how the faeries capture humans, I wanted badly to go to the Astral Plane and live with them forever, for I knew their world would be far better than this one and far more magickal. Considering how much mankind has destroyed this Earth, I am not surprised that the faeries don’t like to come here as much as they did when people actually believed in them and respected Mother Earth. But the faeries know that they are always welcomed wherever I am and they will never be harmed by me.
I always knew that one way to keep faeries around was to keep the beauty of nature around, that’s why I never mowed down the wildflowers around my house. I spend some of my free time in the forest around my house, although it is slowly but surely falling to the mercy of clear-cutting. However, I have discovered spots of wild plants and flowers that still stand, and I can feel their presence among it. I hope that the faeries use their powers to protect their domains. Perhaps it will be the grace of the nature spirits that finally save our Earth.
I was raised as a hardcore Baptist, and converted to Paganism at age 22 and Wicca at 24 officially, as I realized that there are so many wonderful things to discover when you are brave enough to open your mind and believe. The secrets of nature and all its divinity rest all around us, just waiting to be unlocked, and they will be impossible to find so long as you choose to remain separate from nature.
