Christian Wicca Defended

Author: Christopher Aldridge

Christian Wicca tends to get attacked by Christians, Wiccans and Pagans, saying that it is impossible for the religion of Wicca and Christianity to combine. I feel sorry for those Wiccans who also want to be Christian and the Christians who also want to be Wiccan, and they do not pursue the path because of constant bombardment from people who simply don’t understand the obvious. So in this article all that is going to be laid to rest as I reveal how it’s very well possible to be a Christian Wiccan, even though it’s a rare group.

Let’s first look at some things that make you Wiccan and Christian. If you’re Wiccan, chances are you believe in nature spirits and a Goddess. However, this belief is not incompatible with Christianity.

If you’re a Christian who believes that the spirit of God is everywhere and in all things, then you have to at least consider the possibility that nature spirits are the manifestation of God. And seeing that God is an all-powerful being, he can take on any form he chooses. Some people I know even see the Virgin Mary as a Goddess.

In Wiccan practices, you are also able to work with the archangels, and some paths even recognize Jesus as an ascended master. So this notion that all Wiccans and Witches reject Jesus and do not know him is actually very wrong.

But this is not the argument that most Christian Wiccans face. Instead, people will throw Bible verses at them that condemn Witchcraft, but let’s look at what a Witch was in the ancient Hebrew and Roman culture, and examine some facts about magic in the Bible.

First of all, if you’re a Pagan and you use Bible verses against people, I find you to be in more of a contradiction. Because if you’re a Pagan, you can only believe the Bible to either be true or false. The Bible cannot be true when it comes to Christian Wiccans and false when it comes to you.

So if you believe it to be true, you have to acknowledge that you are headed for a bad afterlife. If you believe it to be false, then don’t quote it.

And the argument that Christians have to follow the Bible word for word is a fallacy. No one follows the Bible word for word. I sincerely hope that no one follows or believes in Deuteronomy 13:6-10, Exodus 31:15 or I Corinthians 14:34-35.

So we all pick and choose from the Bible anyway; it’s not a strategy that only a few use.

Since we’re on Bible verses, let me take a few minutes to prove another point. When you look at Exodus 31:15, it says that anyone working on Sunday should be put to death. Now, Christians who I have faced with this will tend to say, “Well, that was a law made thousands of years ago and it no longer applies to today.”

Okay, fine, but why should I then in the same book accept that the laws of Witchcraft apply today? Let’s consider what a Witch was in the ancient Hebrew and Roman culture.

There is evidence to suggest that the Biblical word “Witch” meant poisoner and destructor or “those who sacrifice their sons and daughters in the fire.” It is clear that the authors of the Bible were not talking about what people would call good Witches; they were talking about the evil, so the Bible does not condemn good Witches. Moses used magic the same as the Pharaoh’s magicians. They all turned their staffs into snakes, just by different God (s) .

So in terms of being a Christian Wiccan, I think there’s evidence to suggest that what matters is how you use your magick and if you do it for God.

Prayer and Spell, is there a difference? Overall, no. Both prayer and spell consists of directing your will, intent and energy to the divine and the universe with the hope of creating change. They’re the same thing. Nothing Wiccans associate with comes from Satan. The Earth, elements, universe, we and the energies of those things were all created by God, not Satan. So we draw our power from the very things that God gave us.

Now I know that some Christian critiques of Wiccans will say that anything of the Earth is of Satan and not God. Well, our symbol, the pentacle, is a star from heaven, while the cross was made from the Earth. Just because something is of the Earth certainly does not mean they are evil or "Satanic."

Wicca, by definition, is a neo-pagan religion. But in-depth research will show that Christianity is rooted in Paganism. Christians adopted many things from the Pagans like holidays, rituals, and observances. I cannot count how many Pagan Saviors were born on December 25th with the same story as Jesus. Christianity is not without Paganism.

Another misconception that people have about Christian Wiccans is that they pray to nature spirits and other beings other than God, which is forbidden in the Bible. However, Christians acknowledge and interact with spirits and beings that they don’t necessarily worship, examples would be the archangels and the Virgin Mary. To acknowledge is not to worship, to interact is not to pray. Even the symbols and words in Christianity originated in Witchcraft and Pagan cultures. The cross was a symbol of the directions and also of the Zodiac. The word AMEN originated in the Egyptian Pagan culture as AMEN-RA.

So, can we really make the case that Christianity is the farthest thing from magick and paganism? No, we cannot. If anything, we can legitimately make the case that Paganism provided the base for Christianity. There is absolutely no reason why someone cannot be a Christian Wiccan.

So if you want to follow this path and you feel that it is your true will and, above all, the will of the divine to do so, then go. Pay no attention to people who may bash you. As long as you know you are on the path that best suits you, you’ll be fine.
