The Primal Gift: Sex in Pagan Culture

Tonight the moon glows… the clouds wash over Her like a scarf of charcoal grey. I step outside and I am reborn. I am naked, wearing only my skin as I walk into the dim. I am young. I am vital. And, there is another… He waits in the field yearning for my touch. We meet under the stars on a Midsummer’s night. We exist for the Gods, as the Gods. We show them what it means to be human. We show them that to be human is to be divine. The sexual power behind these words is compelling (though it does remind me of a fantasy novel I read some time ago) . As a whole, Pagan culture embraces diverse sexual lifestyles and ideals. Does the nature of sexual energy lend a need for further tact and subtlety? Or, are we being too puritanical for this day and age?

From the utilizing of sexual energy in magic to the archetypal Great Rite, there is a lot to discuss in Paganism concerning sexuality.

Discretion

There is need for discretion when it concerns the public, both in ritual and when talking sex. Having a public event with the Great Rite involved is something taboo. There’s a reason for it. It is a magical act. It should be kept secret from those not involved. Forget the fact that those performing the act need a good headspace and inviting gawkers brings with it potential discomfort. You gotta set the scene. Sex and magic are things best kept in the shadows (metaphorically speaking of course) . I think that the most important thing is to treat sexuality with respect. Now, in an adult forum, it’s good to find a time and place for reflection on things like the Kama Sutra, Sexual energy, Exploration, Polyamory and other topics that go unsaid in a vanilla kind of world. And the world does like to pretend it is vanilla, until you dig deeper and find all the other flavors beneath the surface.

In fact, there’s a good crossover with the BDSM and Pagan communities. I’m not saying that only Pagans are into BDSM. It spans the gamut. Yet in my experience, if you are open to the possibilities of magic and mysticism, you are generally more open or tolerant of people expressing themselves in a sexual nature. Besides, something that I respect in that community is their ability to be discrete. They understand the need for secrecy, respect and the ability to shut their mouths (Did I mention secrecy?) . No one needs to know what goes on behind closed doors.

I live in the Southern United States; BDSM is something on weird late-night movies and joked about as a fringe activity. Magic is something on Charmed, Buffy or Harry Potter. There is a skewed vision there, on both accounts. Adding to the skewed vision of society… On the news’ stands there are women in bikinis or super-short skirts photoshopped to look thinner and bustier. Men shirtless and oiled down sporting smart looking hats and tight jeans. I turn on the television and hear a detailed description of a rape on Law and Order: SVU with that tale-tell orchestral music flowing behind her words (Click) I see Lady Heather on a rerun of CSI discussing psychology with Grissom while drinking tea. (Click) Tonight at 11pm, 7th graders are having oral sex in elementary school bathrooms while the shift in sexual education classes causes controversy in suburbia (click) Vivaaaaa Viagra! (Click) Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria! (Yeah, the dogs and cats comment was from Ghostbusters. Sex can’t be around you all the time. Besides, there is no sex, only Zuul) It all blurs together. Zuu.. I mean… sex sells, and the most racy sells most. We often get blind to it, desensitized to what it really is. A blessing and affirmation of life.

"We are all born sexual creatures, thank God, but it's a pity so many people despise and crush this natural gift." ~Marilyn Monroe

It got me started thinking. Sex is something we take for granted. We overlook something that requires an intensity of self, at least when done well. In her quote, you can see the truth there. By ignoring and disrespecting this gift given by all of our ancestors (we had to get here some way right?) and Gaia herself, we let wither something that is beautiful. How can we commit sexual openness and sexual discretion into the same world? I can almost hear my best friend say, “Very carefully.” You can be open and not pouring all over the place with your words and actions. You can share your thoughts and perspectives without gross detail. That is the line between good taste and bad. Know when to keep silent.

Sexual power

Freedom. Choice. Knowing that the world is your oyster. You are the master/mistress of your Self and all you will. Confidence. People are drawn to it. When you feel free, others flock to that sense of levity. That laughter. That power. In sexuality, it doesn’t really matter too much what you look like. You can be drawn chemically to someone opposing societal norms. Someone short and dumpy. Someone with bad teeth. If that someone has confidence and puts a great deal of effort into the ritual of sex, it is a huge turn on. Sexual power starts with knowing yourself. If you know your motivations, you can direct them in an efficient manner. If you are aware of yourself, then you are aware of how you react to others and ultimately how others react to you. That woman who walked by smelling oh so pleasing. That man who locked eyes with you at the bookstore making your heart beat a little faster. Little things become larger than life. Other things fade away, and all you see is the potential of bliss and primal passions. Then, we shake it off and continue on our merry way buying that book or walking to work. That sort of sexual power is animal magnetism, which is something not to be taken lightly. Your sense of smell is heightened. In fact, all of your senses are increase in clarity. If all five of our senses increase like that while in that state of being, we can be aware of other things as well. Sexual divination and/or clairsentience through heightened sensory media. If you are able to train your mind to focus somewhere other than sex while in this state, imagine what you could shift this laser of awareness onto? The future? The past? The Akashic Records? The limits only stop with your imagination.

And what of the act itself? The energy generated is something quite desirable, depending on your use for it. Instead of grounding it out or leaving it to the bedroom, use it in your spellcraft. Use it in your constructs. Charging your working tools and charms. There is a potential inertia that builds up until there is a release that could send a spell off into the ether with a great deal of oomph and a nice afterglow. It’s more fun than chanting, and you don’t need nearly as many people for it as you would a spiral dance. In fact, you don’t really need anyone else for that matter. Just yourself. Sex magic does not always necessitate two people. I’m sure you could figure out my meaning there…

Which leads me to something simple and oh so true…

We take ourselves too seriously

Yup. If the Gods didn’t want us to laugh at ourselves, then the act of sex would be a great deal more graceful and not look half as funny.

Sexual energy is something not to fear or be ashamed of. It is something to be aware of and embrace as a natural part of who we are. Yes, we need our little rituals and privacy. So do the Birds of Paradise and many other species. As Pagans we strive to explore ourselves in many ways. Sexual liberation begins with understanding who we are and realizing that we are in fact free spirits. And, even though it is exciting, this is just one part of who we are. Everything is energy. And no energy should be ignored or cast aside. Especially when that energy gives us the gift of life. It really is a miracle. It really is a blessing.

…and on Midwinter a child is born. The Oak King fresh with the wisdom of the void coaxes the Sun to return and with him a promise of Spring.

~Blessings~
