The Wisdom of Stones

I look out onto a beautiful sunrise, the dawning of a new day filled with all the promise of what we can achieve or manifest.

That’s what Magick is all about, isn’t it? We hold in our mind’s eye a single possibility. Perhaps our goal is to begin a new career, to bring love into our lives, or to buy our first home. But, is it entirely in our hands?

I am a strong believer in fate. And while I don’t think our lives are necessarily predetermined from birth, I do believe that there are forces at play that will ultimately have the final word, no matter what we do from a mundane or magickal standpoint to effect change. Magick is funny like that.

We are fortunate to be living at a time when we are able to tap into the wisdom of some of our most experienced teachers and practitioners. The ability for us become proficient in the occult arts has never been better. We’ve read just about every book and taken workshops on every Craft related topic available, all in the hopes that it will make us more adept. We’ve meditated on our goal; used the Tarot, the Runes or some other form of divination to ascertain the proper timing and probability of a positive outcome for our Magick. The Moon is in our Seventh house and Jupiter really is aligned with Mars! This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius! Dammit! We’ve thrown just about everything we have into the outcome of our spell, so when we let that energy fly, we feel confident that we’ve covered all our bases, have our target in sight and that the work should go as planned!

And then, we wait. And wait, and wait and then….Nothing! It all goes up in a puff of incense! It’s as if the Universe grabs us by the scruff of our little magickal necks and says, “Not so fast!”

So, what went wrong? What, if anything, could we have possibly done differently? We are left feeling frustrated and confused in the aftermath of what we perceive as our own magickal “epic fail!”

What may have happened, in my humble opinion, is something I refer to as “Magickal Dysfunction Disorder.” Think of it as a form of metaphysical performance anxiety. And I believe it happens to all of us at one time or another, regardless of our level of experience.

The origins of Magickal Dysfunction Disorder may very well be rooted in our own psyche. Perhaps what we lack is confidence in our abilities or subconsciously, we aren’t entirely convinced that what we are attempting to do will work. Alternatively, we may be so emotionally invested in a particular outcome that our attachment interferes with the momentum of our energetic efforts. In essence, we sabotage our aspirations by utilizing the very energy expended in manifesting our goal.

Magick isn’t an exact science. At times, the best outcomes occur when one least expect them and often, with little effort on our parts. At others, what we desire eludes us. This unpredictability is the very thing that causes us to most doubt ourselves. I don’t consider this necessarily a reflection on our expertise, but instead, is an affliction that even the most experienced practitioner encounters from time to time. It’s called…being human.

After all, it’s easy to doubt the intangible, despite the many times we’ve seen our goals manifest. That is the reason why we continue to practice Magick, isn’t it?

“Success be thy proof” ~ Aleister Crowley

And yet, on occasion, our spells just don’t work. What now? Are we magickally inept? Did we fall into some bad karma? Or perhaps, it’s something much, much worse. Maybe our failure to manifest comes through no fault of our own…but instead, is courtesy of that one little four-letter word.

Fate! Yes, that’s right. As unfathomable as it might be to imagine, our Magick may not have worked simply because it wasn’t meant to! :::Gasp:::

In his work, “To a Mouse”, poet Robert Burns writes, “The best laid plans of Mice and Men oft go awry”.

But, have they really gone “awry” or are there forces at work that are simply looking out for our best interests. On a mundane level, what we’re striving for appears to be that which will bring us happiness. Yet, there may be certain unforeseen aspects of our “plan” that look like a big ole’ mess to those on the Astral.

That job we thought we would be just perfect for? The commute is great, it pays well, but the overbearing Department Supervisor likes to slack off and then blame the lack of productivity on her employees. And, what about the love interest we hoped to bring into our lives? At first glance, he seems like everything we could ever want in a partner. He’s successful, intelligent and just relocated from another State where his former lover had to take out a restraining order against him.

Some believe that including an “anti-harm” disclaimer to their Magick may prevent these unexpected misfortunes from occurring. “An’ it harm none” or “for the good of all” come to mind. Personally, I’m all about “harming none”, but harm, in my humble opinion, can be subjective and it begs the question, who decides what is harmful?

While, there is absolutely nothing wrong with practicing responsibly, but our interconnectedness to the World around us, at times, places the Magick we’re doing in a precarious position. Can one really practice effectively, while taking into account the well-being of ALL whom may or may not be affected by our Magick?

So, perhaps what our Magick needs is merely a little more “tweaking.” I have personally found that one of the best things to do is nothing at all. Patience and the passing of time may be all that’s needed before we attain our hearts desire.

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." ~ Thomas A. Edison

So what do I do when my greatest efforts fail to come to fruition? Well, I embrace the beauty that is Magick, despite its imperfections, and then I turn to the one person who captured the true essence of “Fate” and who, in his profound wisdom, uttered those undeniable words….

“You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get what you need” ~ Mick Jagger, The Rolling Stones.
