The “New” Goddesses and Gods of the Millennium

Author: Heather Belt

I get so frustrated when I hear that Miley Cyrus is smoking Salvia or giving a forty-two year old movie director a lap dance. I’m not angry because she is choosing to live her life in the way she and obviously, her parents, see fit. I’m not angry because she is choosing to do this in a public forum for all to see like some performance monkey!

I’m angry because my sixteen-year-old baby sister is “idolizing” these people, buying their magazines and clothes. And for what? What are the majority of people who are famous today famous for doing? If you answered “nothing” or “close to nothing” then you would be correct. The new Goddesses and Gods of the 21st Century, right? Or has it always been this way? I’m sure Cleopatra’s practices had all of the Egyptian women in uproar over black eyeliner, right?

The money flow in this country is unequally imbalanced. And it’s going to those who deserve it least. People obsess and get plastic surgery and kill for people they will never meet or talk to. I guess the real point here is I think it’s disgusting how we allow these idiots to influence our children and our wallets. We are only doing ourselves a disservice in the long run because the more we feed the beast, the more it will want. I could go on and on about how these people are afforded freedoms we can only dream about (like being able to walk out of solitary confinement in jail after only serving a few hours for something like drunk driving) and we keep feeding their celebrities. They are the new Goddesses and Gods and we worship them like subservient fools. It’s time for it to stop. So in taking this into consideration what is the missing factor here? Why are these people so worshipped?

I truly have come to believe it’s because a strong foundation of religion, any religion, is missing. There is no higher consciousness or connection with a divine. There is no self-esteem. Only the lust to fulfill whatever need you feel is void in your existence. This hollow existence where crap is king and spirituality has become a myth can be sold in a brand-name endorsed by a no talent idiot peddling his or her wares on the helpless and weak.

These “celebrities” can’t fill their own emotional needs, let alone the needs of millions of admirers. So what do they do? They binge and booze. They set examples of immoral and crude behavior our youth buy. They sell themselves and their souls to make a buck. They take on the public responsibility to set a positive example, off our hard earned dollars that put them there, and then they turn their backs on us. What’s worse? We all feed into it. Whether or not we ourselves actually idolize these individuals our children do.

It’s really scary that we put these people on pedestals, give them thousands of dollars of our money and complain that health care and education are lacking. It’s no different than the story of Martin Luther and the church door, except no one is crying “foul”. We are happily sedated as long as no one treads on our “personal” freedoms, which are really a myth if you think about it. Every day I’m become more and more frustrated at the current state of our world and the people in it. And when I hear that Paris Hilton, who has never had to worry where her next meal is coming from in her entire life, has been caught with cocaine it makes me sick to my stomach and disgusted that I even know who she is!

Even us who consider ourselves spiritually enlightened are buying into the hype, even at lower levels. I once sat at a gathering of witches that cost me $60.00 only to find out that I was being told stuff I could have read in a book. I watched my once mentor sip on a Dunkin Donuts ice coffee as she openly admitted that she knew little on the subject matter being presented and pushed in her brochure as her handler, yes, a HANDLER, gathered everyone’s money. Now I’m all for making a hard-earned buck and earning a living, but can I just say…seriously? This plague of celebrity is everywhere.

We need a wake up call. The Lindsey Lohans and Paris Hiltons need the same reality check. Life is more than glitter and glam. It’s more than keeping up with the Robinsons. There is a reason we are all sitting on this big rock and it’s not so Miley’s new song can be number one on the charts. I am all for kicking it renaissance style when the days of the minstrel and muse were prevalent, but the stuff being massed produced today last substance and staying power. Our children are coming out of school uneducated about Roman and Greek myths and instead bow down to the school of Hannah Montana. They know more about a perfect stranger, who won’t matter in 10 years, than history and events that shaped our country and lives as people. Is everyone ok with this? It certainly seems so.

The point I’m trying to make is that a certain amount of admiration and respect if due to those how have truly earned this status. What have these young ladies and gentlemen really done in their life times to claim this title? It’s time that we stop “leaving well enough alone” and take active roles in doing something about this travesty. We need to all take time to instill free-thought and character in each other’s lives and more importantly a connection with the divine.

Every year that turns anew we get further and further away from the truth of our beings and for nothing that is really important or will be important when we return to the earth. I fear for our futures and with the circle of life there is a reaction for every action. This cycle is becoming more and more vicious as we sleigh ride into the unknown future of certain demise.
