Well of course, They are! Though, I realize some people doubt it... so, lets take a walk and discuss it...
Let's go outside... and walk, it's a beautiful day, after all.
Feel that sunshine on your face! Doesn't it feel wonderful? Yes, you think so too? Well doesn't it also feel 'real?' Well, He is one of the Gods; He has been called Ra, Quetzalcaotl, Helios, Sol, and Father Sun, among other names. He is certainly real. What about this planet beneath our feet, that dances around OLE Sol, in an eternal dance of life. She has been called Gaia, or Demeter, or Frigg among many other names that our Mother Earth has been worshipped by through the ages.
Look up there, in that sky... it is one of those mystical days when the moon can be seen with her brother the sun, in the day sky. She is called, Luna, Ix Chel, Isis, and dozens of other names too... She is most certainly real... Have you ever seen that picture the astronauts took from Her, that shows the Blessed Mother Earth rising over the Moon's horizon, with the Father Sun in the background. That photograph hangs over my altar! Along with paintings of the Holly King, and Vishnu, and Ares, and Spider Grandmother, and so many other Gods and Goddesses. Most of Them will be harder to prove to you, than the warm sunshine on your face, or the nurturing ground below our feet, but They are all just as real.
As real as you or me... or perhaps They are real BECAUSE of you and me worshipping them... or perhaps, we are real BECAUSE they created us... or perhaps a bit of both... perhaps They created us, SO we would create Them, by our worshipping of Them. It is a paradox... we simply can not understand... .some things are not meant to understand, some things are simply magical and mystical, and mythical... but who says magical, mystical, and mythical things, people, animals, places, and Gods, can not be real?
The Gods are 'real' to me... They answer my prayers, help me with my spells, when I invoke them... watch over and guide me though out my daily life. I am a Witch, who worships all the Gods, and I am a sworn Priestess of 8 Gods, in particular... Mother Mary, Isis, Gaia, Spider Grandmother (Kaene Ski Amai Yehi is Her name in Cherokee, but She, like most Gods, answers to many names.) I am sworn to Apollo, Vishnu, the Holly King, and Ares too, as I believe a Priestess should work magic with and worship many varied Gods and Goddesses. However, some Priests and Priestesses serve only one God, perhaps Diana, or Thor, or Pele... .some traditions of Witchcraft religion follow only one culture's Gods... say only Egyptian deities, or perhaps the Celtic Pantheon. I would think they see their Gods as real, even if they do perhaps doubt the ones they do not personally follow. Even Jews and Christians and Muslims see their single God as real, even if they do insist that everyone else's Gods are not real.
Some Priests and Priestesses, see all the Gods as being not truly real beings, but some sort of 'aspects' of a single great God. This strikes me as being a clinging to Christian dogma, as I can not fathom Cupid and Kali being aspects of the same being, or The Butterfly Maiden being just a part of the same single all-powerful God, that Poseidon, Anubis, Hina, Bridget, Ganesha, Ursula, Loki, Selu, Set, Bacchus, Vesta, Ryujin, Huitzilpochtli, and hundreds of other Gods and Goddesses are. Are They inter-connected? Well, I would agree with that idea. I would say that all life is inter-connected on some level, even a single cell bacteria, a hummingbird, a whale, me, you, The Dalai Lama, Attila the Hun, Hitler, and Mother Teresa have Life in common, but that does not make us all 'part of each other.' It makes us related to one another... and I would say that the Gods must be similarly related, due to Their having Divinity in common. But even most of those who see all Gods as being only 'part of some great single Diety' see that diety as being real. Many people believe unicorns, dragons, elves, fairies, and little green guys from Mars are 'real.' Perhaps all of those things are 'real' on some level of reality, on some dimension, or in some other place in 'time.' Perhaps we simply haven't found the last herd of unicorns hiding off in some remote forest. After all we thought several species were extinct, only to 'find' that some still survive, somewhere. Surely in the billions and billions of planets and moon siblings of our own Mother Goddess Earth, circling the billions and billions of siblings of our Father Sun God, there are other races of people and animals and things, that we would likely say 'were not real' if we were asked about such beings now. Who can say in certainty that something is not real... or something is impossible? It was once thought that our flat earth was the center of the solar system and all other planets, the sun, and all the stars in the universe orbited us! It was once thought that 'Giant Squids' were not real, but were only the legends of superstitious sailors. The Gilled Goat of Korea was thought to be a legend, but I saw the one that was found recently on the discovery channel documentary... and I can say to you, that I would have said that no such animal was 'real.' before I saw it... even after seeing that strange beastie Mother Nature dreamed up, I must remind myself that it has to be real.
Things do not have to be understandable, or even believable to be real. Things can be unknown, unbelieved in, and unheard of, forgotten, and ridiculed and yet still be real. So how could our Gods not be real... They are believed in, followed, prayed to, and even worshipped! They have been for millions of years! So how could they not be real? If our Gods are not real, then how could we be? How could anything be? Perhaps nothing is real then... .I am a Science fiction and fantasy author, as well as a Witch Priestess, so, taking off my pointed black hat and putting on my writer's cap, I can contemplate 'nothing being real.' Sounds like a wonderful plot to a fantasy or sci fi book. But when I look at my altar and look at the paintings, and statues, and pictures of my Gods and Goddesses, I KNOW that They are real.
You may disagree with my belief in that fact, even after our walk on Mother Earth under the Father Sun, with Tate, the Wind God blowing a nice breeze of the scent of Lakshmi's blooms to us, as we pick an apple from one of Pomona' trees, and listen to Apollo's muses play music with the chirping birds. You may. But I fail to see how, even if I have failed to convince you with my musings, that Nature could fail to sway you with Her Magic. Perhaps, if you are still unconvinced you might be enlightened by a trip the Temples. Not all of us, are privileged enough to visit the Sphinx, Stonehenge, Easter Island, and the cave at Delphi. Not all of us have seen the masterpiece Paintings and statues of the Gods that are hidden in great museums around the world. That is why I started a web-site I call "Cyber-Temples", and it is where I display my collection of art devoted to the Gods. http://www.angelfire.com/nc2/cybertemples You might also introduce yourself to the Gods, and perhaps try to build a relationship with Them. There are many books on the Gods, but my favorite two to recommend are Encyclopedia of the Gods by Michael Jordan, and The Book of Goddesses and Heroines by Patricia Monaghan.
Are the Gods real? I know they are to me... and I am truly very sorry for your loss, if They do not seem real to you.
