Magical Household Cleaning

Spring is here for a lot of folks. With that we start in on those household chores to deep clean windows, behind the fridge, the gardens and all those areas we don’t usually frequent. Now if you are old enough you’ll remember back to the Bewitched show and how Samantha could just wiggle her nose and the chores would be done. Wouldn’t that be nice! For us though, we have to take a more hands-on approach. That being said, why not make it fun and also clean out some of the negative builds up as well. Negativity flows through everyone and every household at some point.

Depending on what path you follow, a cleansing can be different. The use of candles, sage, herbs, gums and chants and spells are amongst some ways to cleanse negativity. When we want to cleanse our ritual tools we do so by means of consecrating them during ritual using earth, air, fire and water. These represent the four elements most of us work with.

Earth represents the North, which allows us to feel grounded and re-connect to our roots and has a calming effect. Air represents the East, which allows us to feel free, and lets the negativity blow away. Fire represents the South, which allows us to purify and eliminate unwanted objects and thoughts. Water represents the West, which is cleansing by washing away the bad and refreshing our souls. Think about how you clean your house. You dust, vacuum, wash, and you use air, water, heat and cleaners. Why not utilize these tools to take out the dust and the negativity?

A good spring cleaning, for me, is putting on lively music, opening up the blinds and letting in sunshine. If it’s warm enough, I open up a window for fresh air, light a candle and then sing my way through the day and all the chores. In today’s busy electronic world, most people do not enjoy just being with their own thoughts. Have you tried it? While you are cleaning, consider putting that cell phone in a different room and go through the day without checking social media, email, news reports or answering text messages. Here is a little news flash; if it is a real emergency most likely they will call you. This disconnect will allow you to focus on the task at hand: cleaning the house and cleaning out the negativity.

As I am sweeping the floor I make up a song that sweeps the negativity into the trash. Something like “With each sweep there is less stress as I throw it out it won’t come back” or “Sweep it up and dump it out all those bad thoughts are now out with the trash”. Don’t fret; it doesn’t have to make sense, it only has to keep you laughing and smiling. The more you do it the more you will get in to it. Yes, it will feel silly but isn’t that the point? You can always turn up the music and sing along too. Singing helps up release stress and negativity.

Keep in mind though, for most, this works when you pick music that isn’t screaming nonsense that is negative already. I say that because in today’s world a lot of music has a negative undertone. It might make you feel like you aren’t the only one in the world with problems but it also will keep you in that dark negative place you need to crawl out of. It might be fun when you vacuum to use it as a microphone. Dance along with it as if you have an audience.

When I fold clothes though, I actually set my tablet up and put on some stupid show. I usually pick a show that I normally would not watch, that has no meaning really, such as a silly sitcom. This is my time to see what I really like… plus it makes folding the laundry a lot faster. How does this cleanse my soul? Well, it allows me to explore what really makes me laugh and sparks my interest without the interference of family or friends. It isn’t a show you really have to study or be focused on and so that allows your mind to rest.

Letting your mind rest while doing your chores is what I am getting at. The simple act of turning off the normal daily thoughts can lessen your stress and give you a confidence boost. You also could have a moment of clarity that will help take care of a problem. Think of it as a reboot. You reboot your electronics when they ‘get stressed out’, so why not your own mind?

Now all those chores are done and we want to protect our home, our family and ourselves. Finish up your day by following your magical or spiritual path. Light a sage stick and go to each room and smudge the room including around the windows and doorways. Say a chant as you are doing this. Something like “With this smoke the negativity clears, With this sage protection is here” or “Smoke of sage cast out all doubt that remains and protect our home day to day”. Make up what feels right to you, keep it short and sweet so you can repeat it easily room to room.

Another way to finish up your day is to light a small candle (birthday candle size approx) and place it in a central location that is safe for it to burn down. As you light it say a spell. Again, make up something that feels right to you and your beliefs. Maybe something like “With this flame I release the bad and bring in the good”. No matter what you say make sure you let the candle burn all the way down. If you have water that has set out under the moon now is a good time to put a few drops of it at each window and doorway and say a blessing. Another idea is putting sea salt under your outdoor rugs to keep anything with negative intent away. The list can go on and on depending on what you practice or believe.

All of our souls need a cleansing from time to time, so why not do that as you are cleaning your house? When your surroundings are clean and you have been refreshed, your happiness level will be higher. When we are happy our stress levels are lower and we can work through problems easier.

Bright Blessings,
Ruby DragonLily
