I am still amazed and intrigued by the power that food has, to bring people together.
Everlasting bonds and unforgettable memories can be created while making food or sharing who we are over a meal. Life changing conversations often happen while preparing food together or while gathered at the table.
Since ancient times meals have signified togetherness, celebration and ceremony.
Love stories and life stories often begin with meals and conversations shared at a table. Unforgettable moments and life changing events between parents and their children, siblings, friends, lovers often happen around food and drink. There is power, energy and emotions in and around food that we can carry with us as memories all our lives and even pass down to others.
I remember fondly, times spent creating memories in the kitchen with my grandmother Dorothy, my aunt Evelyn, and my aunt Darnelle when I was a child. Each of these amazing women had unique personalities, different backgrounds, and a variety of attributes that made them special to me.
I spent many school vacations and weekends with my grandmother Dorothy, my fatherís mother, who came to this country from Portugal when she was only ten years old and brought with her ancient secrets and charms from that place. Dorothy learned how to cook traditional Portuguese recipes from a very young age from her mother and her aunts. We spent much of our time in the kitchen, at beautiful West beach or in her garden.
When my grandmother began teaching me to cook I was nine years old. My grandmother and her house held so much love and magic for me. I remember feeling awe and gratitude as I was being initiated into the sisterhood of family culinary artists.
My grandmother had a large kitchen that always felt inviting it had a walk in pantry, a hutch, and decorative plates, pictures and treasures hung on the walls. At the center of the kitchen was a large wood table with many seats. Gathered around this table family and friends shared stories, memories, laughter and of course delicious food. Sometimes there were family disagreements as well however all the times shared were memorable ones.
My grandmother taught me about uniting people, spice, flavors and how to prepare and cook food with love, purpose and intentions. All the while we had wonderful conversations that taught me about life and taught me how to love. Our hearts and hands seemed more connected as we prepared traditional Portuguese recipes and comfort food for those people dearest to us. We often enjoyed making seafood, roasts and desserts like sweet bread and rice pudding.
My Aunt Evelyn was my motherís aunt and lived in England. I spent a couple of summers with her and uncle Andy while on school vacation when I was eight and again when I was eleven. We spent time traveling and sight seeing yet much of our time together was spent creating magic in the kitchen over intimate conversations about life.
Aunt Evelyn and I made traditional English and Scottish recipes. We prepared lamb roast with mint sauce, Yorkshire pudding, fish and chips, potato scones and many other delightful dishes. My aunt Evelyn shared many deep thoughts and personal feelings with me. I loved our many discussions as she shared her recipes and wisdom with me.
My aunt Evelyn also loved her garden and we spent a good deal of time tending it together and enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
I was also fortunate enough to spend many vacations and weekends with my aunt Darnelle and uncle Rick also on my fatherís side. Much of my time while visiting them was spent in the woods or at lakes enjoying nature. The rest of the time we were preparing and enjoying food together in my auntís cozy, country kitchen.
My aunt Darnelle loved making her own jellies, jams, and fruit pies usually from berries we gathered ourselves and comfort foods like meat with vegetables and mashed potatoes or soups.
All of these women remain dear in my heart and I am forever grateful to them for sharing their culinary gifts, love, wisdom and life experiences with me.
These remarkable women helped instill in me a love of cooking and sharing my self with others through the art of cooking. I am extremely moved by the wonderful way food can be used to share traditions, our time, our thoughts and our deepest feelings.
Through the art and magic of cooking we pass on parts of ourselves that can last forever in the hearts, minds, and recipe books of those we love. The strength of these amazing bonds and memories we build while creating delicious recipes together are lasting tributes to all we share throughout our lifetimes.
Now I am dedicated to creating a legacy of my own I can pass on. I have shared so many wonderful moments cooking with and for my son, my nieces and nephews, my husband, family, friends and even coworkers.
So I am in the process of working on a family recipe book that I am going to have printed and give to several members of my family as keepsakes. I am also going to create a version to publish. I believe it is so important to pass on these amazing culinary traditions and treasures so that they are not lost. I enjoy imagining future generations creating and sharing these recipes and creating their own.
I am currently learning more about herbs and using more fresh herbs in my recipes. There is something so wonderful about creating with food and there is a purity and honor that lives within the hearts and hands of those that use food to express themselves. No matter what role we play in the kitchen or around the table we are all welcome and important.
May all of you be inspired to make your own memories and magic in the kitchen and pass down a legacy of love, memories and traditions to the next generations.
