| How I Came To Be Wiccan.

I was raised Catholic. My mom was Catholic and my dad was Christian. I was really interested in Catholicism when I was ten to eleven. I knew there was something there, but I didn’t know what. The problems formed when I thought of a goddess more than “god”. I felt a mothering form instead of a male form. I was a kid that loved weird things. I loved magic, ghosts, etc. since I was little.
I think it was in fifth grade that a Wiccan girl moved to our school. No one really questioned her about it. I ignored the pentacle she wore too. So, this past school year, we gained another Wiccan girl. I was drawn to become friends with her for some reason. In seventh grade, I completely abandoned Christianity as a whole. So, this new girl and I became friends automatically.
I'll admit, at first she and I just made fun of Christianity. When I'd debate with others about "God", they'd gang up on me. They'd call me an atheist and told me I'd go to hell. She stood beside me and we teamed up. She'd laugh in people's faces when they mentioned sin or hell. When they'd say I was going to hell, she'd jump in and say, "Well at least hell will be fun! You can't do sh*t in heaven!" or "That's cool. Monique and I will take over hell together." We'd laugh at that too.
The new girl and I made quite a few people mad. I readily defended her when people said that she was scary. People would call her stupid and I would defend her. I saw her wearing the pentacle and asked her and the other girl about it at lunch one day. The new girl just told me she was Wiccan and nothing more. Bethanie- the other Wiccan- told me she had three goddesses and a god. I asked which star meant devil worship and she told me that there isn’t one, that’s just what Christians want you to think. At that point, she got mad.
I asked the new girl if she knew spells and if she could teach me them and also if they actually worked. The new girl seemed a bit uneasy when she said that she knew them. She said she couldn’t teach me them and that they did work. When she tried talking to me about some spells, Bethanie shut her up. Bethanie would tell me that I was being stupid and seem offended that I'd even show an interest in it. I brushed this off because I had been joking.
Every time I brought it up, Bethanie seemed upset when I showed an interest in Wicca. Rochelle- the new girl- brought in tarot cards some time later. I’ve always been drawn to tarot, so I wanted a reading. When I did one, I felt a rush of energy. It was invigorating. I asked Rochelle about this and she said that that's why she loved tarot. She said that she might teach me sometime if I wanted. Bethanie was seething at this, too.
But it wasn’t until April that I actually got down to researching it. Once I did, I found that it was for me automatically. I think it was fate that I became friends with the new girl. I had been drawn to her and now I know why. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be Wiccan. I’d still be searching.
I came out of the broom closet first to my mom. It was spur of the moment really. She was going to pick up Chinese food, so I went with her. I decided in a second that I would attempt to tell her so I brought a notebook along. I jotted down some ideas and topics before turning the radio down to tell her. Of course, she didn’t take it too well.
She thinks- still to this day!- that it’s devil worship and that I would be sacrificing animals. Utterly ridiculous! My dad doesn’t even know yet, thank the gods! My two aunts, my cousin, and my younger twin brother know. My brother and cousin tease me non-stop about it. My brother asks if I’ll turn him into a frog. My cousin thinks I’ll curse her.
My mom and aunt don’t say a thing about it. Even when I’m at school- where no one knows- my brother will pick on me, calling me a “wick” (short for Wiccan I think) or a witch. Now that two of my closest friends know, they’ll speak up and tell him to shut up. I’m grateful to my friends for that. They honestly took it better than my family. One of my friends- Paige- didn’t even need me to explain it to her. She knew enough to not think it’s devil worship or evil.
It’s hard because I have no books to go by. There’s a Wiccan shop in a city nearby but my mom refuses to let me go to even look. She won’t even let me go to Barnes and Nobles to get a book. One book, really? She brings “God” or “Jesus” up every five minutes. “That’s just not the way God wanted it.” “Jesus didn’t want me to do blah-blah-blah.” You get the point.
I’m alone in my path, although I do learn a lot from YouTube and just Googling. I’m trying. It makes me stronger. I can now brush off most of my brother's comments. I can ignore my cousin and just walk away. I just chant a prayer to the god and goddess for inner strength when they tease me. And it always works! :)
Bright Blessings, Monique
