Taylor Ellwood and Lupa were handfasted on a perfect day at Brushwood Folklore Center in Sherman New York at noon on Saturday, July 15, 2006. They had been legally married in a small family ceremony the weekend before; the handfasting, however, was a public event attended by friends both old and new.
The couple self-officiated the ceremony. Lupa prepared the ritual area and invited the various spirtiual friends, family and guardians to the event. Taylor then proceeded to tell the story of how he and Lupa met (a story he is *quite* fond of, be assured!) The vows followed, with a friend of theirs binding their hands.
Taylor’s were:
“I give myself to you. I open myself up to you completely I share the secrets of my heart with you. I share the hidden depths of my mind with you. I share the glory of my soul with you. I share the pleasures and pains of my body with you. I give myself to you as your mate, your husband, and honor you as my mate and wife.”
Lupa’s were:
“As I give you the intensity of Wolf, so do I give you the gentleness of Fox. As I give you the slyness of Fox, so do I give you the pack mentality of Wolf. As I give you the flightiness of Horse, so do I give you the strength of Bear. As I give you the wildness of Bear, so do I give you the cooperation of Horse. As I give you the selfishness of Cat, so do I give you the Loyalty of Dog. And as I give you the boisterousness of Dog, so do I give you the grace of Cat."
The couple then kissed, much to the delight of the attendees. A bottle of nonalcoholic mead was passed around, libations were made to the Earth and spirits, and toasts to the couple went 'round the circle with the bottle. The friends, family and guardians were thanked for their presence, and all went their ways with magic in their hearts.
Lupa and Taylor would like to publicly thank the Barneys and the rest of the Brushwood family for allowing them to have this special ceremony at such a wonderful place. They would like to particularly commend the heathens who took the time to make the Runestead such a powerful part of Brushwood. They would also like to thank Alley of the Practical Rabbit for the gift of a handfasting cord, and Magpie for his wonderful mead. Finally, they are grateful to all those who attended--it wouldn't have been the same without you!
The couple also respectfully requests that any blessings of fertility be focused on the success of their books and artwork, as they have chosen not to have children. Thanks :)
