Wicca is, without doubt, the greatest threat to the establishment of the Christian church today. I predict that, given time, the views and the points that the Wicca bring forth to argue and defend their own faith, will, without fail, turn many people away from the dogmatic doctrines of the Christian faith. I predict that someone will take the bible and begin to ask hard, theological questions to the Christians that will not have ready-made answers. I predict that, given time, someone will bring this information to light, and that person will be speaking from the very heart and soul of the Pagan community when all hell breaks loose and the traditional views of organized religion pass over. What have you always wanted to say to them, but have been too afraid to say?
It has been my pleasure to date a fundamentalist Christian for the last eight months. This person has really opened my eyes to things I’ve never seen before. He has sent my mind and my emotions reeling at times, through countless debates between the faiths. I have found myself answering some of the most difficult questions in defense of Wicca, Paganism, Witchcraft, and the Occult that I have ever been asked. I have had to argue my points time and time again. I have met with pastors, Christian prayer warriors, and bible thumping believers who think that Witches have no place in this world and who have the wrong ideas about us all over the place.
I know that many of us would just prefer to stay away from people like this, but I have found this to be an exercise in growth, in strength, and in courage to face the unthinkable – someone who might actually poke a hole in my magickal circle. It has been like sleeping with the enemy at times, but equally rewarding in the knowledge I have gained.
Do you know that some people think that we are tree worshippers? I don’t know about you, but I’ve never gotten on my knees and actually worshipped a tree. I’ve taken in energy from a tree, listened for wisdom in a tree, and I’ve made wands out of tree branches, but a tree as a deity? The idea has never crossed my mind, but I’m sure it has to some!
What outsiders are taught is very different from what we are taught, and the problem is, I’m not going to teach him – because he is an outsider. I am going to allow him to wallow in his ignorance, but try to shed some light on the situation at the same time.
I found myself stumbling into the foundations of “Christian Wicca”. I started wondering how these two faiths blend, meld, and mesh together. I found a lot of common ground when I started to really think about it. In fact, I could have rationalized the whole thing and come to the conclusion that the faiths are virtually the same, only approached in different ways, with differing god and goddess forms. I tell you know, I could write a book about it and the masses would begin to believe it, no matter how far-fetched it sounds to you right now.
Most importantly, I find my mind focused on the fact that we, as a religious people, do not have sound arguments for the justification of our faith. There are some arguments that I hear, time and time again, but these are answers to the simple questions such as “Don’t witches worship the devil?” Any witch with the faintest knowledge of his or her craft would say “Of course not! We don’t believe in the devil.”
But, what happens when questions like “Well, if I’m wrong, it’s no big deal. I get reincarnated into a butterfly, but, what if I’m right?” get directed at you. Answer that one, Miss and Mister Pagan. Are you okay with the notion that this person 1) thinks that he or she may be reincarnated into a butterfly and 2) thinks that you’re screwed if you’re wrong? Better come up with an explanation of reincarnation and the reason why there is no hell.
This person laughed at me, and made a mockery of my religion, and my answers to his questions, but I stood my ground and never backed down on my religious stance. It has been the same for over 25 years. I jumped out of Christianity’s box so long ago as a child, and I will never be able to go back into that box of blind faith and limiting belief systems.
The point of all this is that they will poke holes in you if you allow them to do so. Avoidance will only get you so far, but, one day, you’ve got to be ready to stand up and defend the very convictions of your heart and soul – the nature – the goddess – the spirituality – the direct link to divinity – the god – the deities – the reasons why you chose this path – the reason why you think that your path is true – the reasons why you do what you do.
Now, I know plenty of people on the path of nature, but I don’t know plenty of people who stand up and be counted. I’d like to see the pagan community come out of their homes one day and actually show up, stand up, and start speaking out. It really IS time to get out of the broom closet and hold that broom up in the air, and say “Here I am –come and get me.” The fact is no one is going to come get you for being pagan, Wiccan, witch, or heathen – not today. I live in a town where there are an estimated 25, 000 pagans, but, I’ve only met about 50. Where are the rest of you? Hiding at home in your broom closet, no?
Frankly, if you believe fundamentally what I believe, then it’s your job to speak out against religious dogma. It’s your duty to defend the way of the Wise. You have a significant role to play in this world. I’m not saying that we need to start a holy war – I’m saying that we need to have a voice that’s louder than the misconceptions that the Christians are teaching. We need strong leaders to rise and to put accusations and heresy to rest. The fact is, it’s ALL heresy until they hear it from the mouth of a witch, and even then, since that witch is only speaking for herself, it’s still not the voice of the people.
So, how do us, the unorganized, freethinking, radical and experimental, neo-pagans go about unifying our voice and being heard? First, we need to get our story straight, and then we need to defend it 100%.
We don’t have to apologize for what we practice once we know how to stand secure in our beliefs. I’ll be writing more about the defense of our faiths in the near future. Stay tuned.
