| Magic and Spellwork

In my years of practicing, I rarely perform “magic” or “spells, ” so to speak. Since spells are prayer set to rhythm, then I would say, “Yes I do spells.” But in using the word in its mundane, normal usage, the spells I have done have been limited to healing, protection, a couple love spells (general not of the binding nature), and some stop-slander spells. I have seen too many people think that being a Wytch means getting whatever you want just by saying some magic words. I am currently trying to help a friend, who’s friend is “dabbling.” This person’s son is a Wiccan, so she understands, but does not care. She has started these spell workings all by herself. She has had no experience casting circles nor does she call a circle for anything but spell work. She does not give honor to the Lord and Lady. I know she is headed for problems. I have tried to teach her the ways and things she needs to learn first, but she wants no part of it. Another karmic lesson??? Should I do a spell to make her stop her harmful path, or do I let her continue and let the Lord and Lady take care of it? I have seen too much, so I am very careful in spell work.
I do think spell work is overemphasized. The emphasis should be put back on the Lady and her Lord, on living the life which we are put here for. We are THEIR children, we need to take care of Mother Earth, teach our children in the right ways, which includes teaching by example. I believe television has overplayed the “magic” and has mesmerized the youth with unfounded tales of things that may be. We are all guilty of NOT practicing what we preach in some form or other. We should emphasize the need for introspection more. On the other hand, we are human and have mundane faults. These should be explained to the kids as such, but how to rectify these faults also be explained. We need to get away from the television and back outside to the MAGIC of nature and all her splendor. That is where the real magic is. This is what we need to teach the youth - respect and care for Mother Earth. Else, in the near future, there shall be no Earth or life to worry about. This world is dying fast from overpopulation, greed, and pollution. We must heal the Mother.
Any “magic” should come after all that. I have no problem with someone needing to do a “money spell” to get through some hard times. Asking to find the means to get the money is better. There are those today who would rather do a spell to hit the Big Lottery, than to have to work. That is not right.
So, to me, spell work comes in last of the things on my list. I give honor to the Lord and Lady first. Then any healing prayers. I spend much time in Nature observing Her Magic and doing other things for our Mother. Television in our house is rare.
I think that by overemphasizing spell work and magic, the true meaning of “religion” goes out the door. Americans, especially, want everything they see, right now. They will get out of any hard work if possible and try to find the easiest way to get rich, get cars, into relationships, whatever. I am an American - I know this. But, whatever happened to the good feeling you get at the end of a long hard day’s work? The satisfaction of knowing you did something worthwhile. Whether it be construction, housework, or planting a garden. If we could all shut off the television for one week, and take our kids outside, work around the yard, have fun, jump in the leaf pile, teach them of the magical ways in which leaves change from green to orange. Take a nature walk, pick up some trash while you are at it; look for little magical things, such as a tiny flower blooming all by itself in a place it normally wouldn’t grow. We need to emphasize learning about Mother Earth, so we can protect her, and maintain her.
We need to emphasize compassion; there is too much negativity in this world. We need to learn to SHINE. If we truly believe in reincarnation as Witches, then I would also think we would be doing more ourselves to learn and grow in this life rather than waste it away. How many times have we said “I really should be doing some work on my herb cupboard, ” or “I should see how my friend with the problem is doing.” “I should work on my BoS, ” instead of watching the box. How can we expect our children to grow up respecting the Lord and Lady, listening to us say, “We need to take care of Mother Earth, we need to live in perfect love and trust, ” when we sit in front of the box? How can we expect them to not pick up on anything “magical” from television and not try it? Just like sex, if they are taught responsibly, they will act responsibly. So it is with magic. If used properly, it can do much good. If not, it can cause much harm.
As far as doing spellwork without working a physical spell: Yes, it is possible. Sometimes I have much greater success when I just THINK about what I wish to do in a spell. Just like getting people to do what you wish. That is simple. Having them do what you wish while maintaining good karma takes thought. Example: I am sitting in a restaurant; I look around at all the people. I look at the back of the neck of one person that - one will sneeze. I go to another person – that one will go to the bathroom. I take about five people doing five different things - they all end up doing it. Now, that is all in fun. What about something more serious? Say if someone was in a negative mood and thought about the person they are feeling negative about. What harm can come from them thinking, “I am really angry right now, I wish they’d just die!” Then you find out on the news they did. What now? We have all said it from time to time, mostly not serious, as in: “You leave your toys laying around again, I am going to kill you.” A lot more happens from thought forms than from action. Action will always result from a thought form.
