I would have to say that the Goddess Hecate has changed my life. I was very drawn to her for some reason in the very beginning of my path as a witch. I believe it has to do with being drawn to the underworld and the darker aspects of the Craft. Not necessarily the “evil” part, but the mysterious and unknown.
Hecate is of Greek origin and represents the triple Goddess. Maiden, Mother and Crone. The three aspects of the moon cycle. Maiden for the new to waxing moon, Mother for the full moon and Crone for the waning to dark moon. Her origins are that of the Thracians who were an ancient Indo-European tribe.
But like other deities she was made part of the Greek pantheon and of course the Roman equivalent. She is also considered the Goddess of the crossroads. Travelers would leave offerings for her at midnight on the eve of the full moon at the crossroads.
This represented three decisions in which they had a choice of and it also represented her triple Goddess aspect.
Once an offering was left, you did not look back for you did not dare look her in the face.
Unlike many other Goddess archetypes, she dwells with Persephone and Hades in the underworld. Persephone was considered the bright aspect of the underworld. She would emerge every spring and make the earth fertile. But, Hecate was considered the darker link to the earth.
She is the Goddess of magick and witches. Her festival was held on August 13 every year. It was associated with asking for her protection over the crops as to see they were not harmed before the harvest. However, many perceive her as a vengeful force. I do not see her this way.
However, if you are a Priest or Priestess of this Goddess, she does require you honor her. When asking for her assistance and guidance, she will in fact evaluate if you are worthy of what you are asking for. She will assess your own heart and if you are not in line with your own karma, she will make you aware of it by either not helping you or making you see the error of your ways before she does assist you.
She has been known to send demons to torment her followers but I believe this was due to the fact that their hearts were not right and she wanted to teach them a lesson.
However, if you are fully integrated with her, she can be very inspiring and loving as in my case.
Her symbol is the torch for it is a symbol of illumination of your unconscious mind to awaken. Dogs have been associated with Hecate also. She is consistently shown with hounds in many works of art depicting her. I believe that is another reason why I am drawn to her. I have a great deal of love for dogs. I have shown dogs in dog shows in my past. I am very much in tune with dogs as one of my totem animals and I feel that’s an aspect of why I consider her my patron Goddess.
I feel in discussing Hecate, I am drawn to tell you of a fairly recent experience I had with her which has made me a devout follower. Back in February of this year, I was diagnosed as being HIV positive. I had gone in for an annual physical and I always ask for an HIV antibody test every year.
Several weeks later, my physician revealed to me that I had tested positive. Of course, I was devastated but decided to hand it over to the Goddess and have her do with it what she would.
It was very coincidental that the news was given to me on February 15, 2007. This was two days before the dark/new moon on February 17. My partner and I immediately went to work and devised a ritual to eliminate this disease from my body.
I told my partner that I indeed wanted to take advantage of the dark moon and invoke Hecate. Our ritual had duration of four consecutive nights. We did a circle casting for all four nights. We used black figure candles for the first three nights with a combination of banishing herbs and oils. We carved several things on the candles including name, birth date, sun sign and the disease.
The first two nights, we only “petitioned” her and asked that the disease be drawn out of my body and into the figure candles which were an effigy of me. We would then ritually burn the candles to literally burn the disease away.
The first two nights were very powerful and I felt that my Goddess was indeed going to hear my plea. On the day of February 17, 2007, we timed our third ritual to take place right before the moon was to become new so that we could take advantage of the dark moon.
This time, we invoked the Goddess and her presence was very strong. The ritual was somewhat the same as the first two nights but while we were raising energy and moving the disease into the figure candle, I felt a tremendous peace come over me and it was very overwhelming.
I got quite emotional and broke down. I knew that Hecate was in my presence and the feeling of peace was a message from her stating that everything was going to be all right.
We buried all the remaining candles drippings and herbs in the backyard. On the night of February 18, we did a similar ritual but this was to draw healing energy because we were now in the waxing moon. We petitioned the Maiden aspect of Hecate. We used a white figure candle this time with a combination off healing herbs and oils. This was then buried in the yard as well.
The very next day on February 19, I went to a specialist to have detailed blood work done to determine my viral load. I had to wait three weeks for the results. It was very grueling to have to wait that long.
When I met with the specialist on March 13, I was in for some wonderful news. Although I tested positive for HIV antibodies, they could not find the virus in my blood. The doctor wanted to do an antibody test all over again and do a lower viral load count.
I asked him what type of a test he did. He stated that he did a viral load count of 400 copies of the virus or less in a milliliter of blood. I asked what he would expect to see and he stated anywhere from 15, 000 copies to 30, 000 copies. They couldn’t find 400 or less.
So he drew my blood and did additional testing of 50 copies of the virus or less. A week later, the results came back. THEY COULDN’T FIND THE VIRUS!!
Needless to say, I was not shocked. I knew that Hecate had removed the virus from my body. Also, my blood counts were all normal. My C4 cells were in the 1000’s, which is that of a normal person. I was a paradox to the doctors.
They stated that what I was is called an ‘elite controller”. Someone who can fight the virus on his or her own with his/her own defenses. It is very rare, but we do exist. I have been entered into a Harvard University study now where they are looking at my genetics, DNA and my immune response.
But I know beyond the shadow of a doubt, it was my Goddess who cured me. I have had one other 3-month check up since this has all happened, and all is still normal and well.
So, this is why Hecate is now my patron Goddess and I honor and worship her.
One other thing I want to tell you. In the remaining candle drippings from the white figure candle from the waxing moon ritual, one can see a feminine figure in the white shapes.
But what we found rather interesting was what was in the negative space. It looks to be that of a woman’s profile. I feel these were all signs from my Goddess.
And with this, I will leave you to ponder and explore Hecate.
